Vignesh B wins 2nd Eight Square Chess Academy Classical Rating 2026, Visakh prevails in Blitz

Vignesh B scored 8/9 points to win Eight Square Chess Academy's 2nd International FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament 2026. Ramnathan Balasubramaniam, Jai Sankar Subramanian, Sailesh R, and Johny Arixander scored 7.5/9 points to secure 2nd to 5th positions respectively according to tirebreak scores. The tournament was organised by Eight Square Chess Academy from 1st to 5th April at the Hall of Chess, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai. Frederik Svane wins Sardinia World Chess Festival 2026, Faustino Oro creates History

Frederik Svane scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 points to win the 3rd Edition of Sardinia World Chess Festival 2026. In the last round, Svane scored an important victory over Murali Karthikeyan, who was co-leading with him after 8 rounds. Haik M Martirosyan, Ian Nepomniachtchi, and Mamikon Gharibyan scored an unbeaten 7/9 points to finish in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions, respectively, according to tiebreak scores. Faustino Oro creates history at the Sardinia Chess Festival as he scored his final GM norm after facing Nepomniachtchi in the last round. Yevgeny Levanzov had the privilege of spending an extended time at the event and also delivering three lectures there. In the following review, he will try to cover the tournament both from a professional chess perspective and by describing the surrounding atmosphere, including the various activities offered to spectators, notable figures who came to visit, and some touching human stories. 'Chess Speaking for Itself' as Hans Niemann wins Grand Chess Tour Super Rapid and Blitz 2026

Hans Niemann played some tremendous chess to win the Grand Chess Tour Super Rapid and Blitz 2026. Hans got an early lead in the Rapid section that helped him maintain it in the blitz. After the first day of Blitz, Hans was in 1st place. On the second day, he won the most important last round clash against Radoslaw Wojtaszek to clinch the title. Fabiano Caruana came very close to first place, but in the end, he was not able to keep up with Hans' half-point lead. Check out how Hans, who was tired and sick, managed to win in this strong field. Romania Grand Prix 2026 Kicks off at Bucharest

The first leg of the Romania Grand Prix 2026 kicked off in Bucharest at the iconic Palace of the Parliament on the 9th May 2026. It is a 2-day Rapid event in which top players from across the globe are taking part. Vasyl Ivanchuk, SL Naryanan, Rauf Mamedov, Vaibhav Suri, and Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara are some of the big names taking part in this event. After completion of 4 rounds on 9th May, most of the top seeds are maintaining good results with 4/4. Romania Grand Prix 2026 is a premier international chess circuit organized by the Romanian Chess Federation, bringing together elite players, world-class competition, and iconic destinations. GM Murali Karthikeyan won his 8th round against Ilia Smirin to get into the joint lead with Frederik Svane. In the last round, Karthikeyan will face Svane with black pieces; currently, both players are on 6.5/8 points. 8 players are trailing with 6/8 points. The most important clash of this event will be on board 2 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and the Argentinian Faustino Oro. After 7 rounds at the Sardinia World Chess Festival 2026, 9 players are co-leading with 5.5/7 points. Haik M Martirosyan, Parham Maghsoodloo, Murali Karthikeyan, Mukhammadzokhid Suyarov, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Abhimanyu Puranik, Prraneeth, Vuppala, Frederik Svane, and Smirin Ilia are tied for the lead. Hans Niemann is letting his chess do the talking at his first ever appearance at Grand Chess Tour. At the Super Rapid 2026 in Warsaw, he scored 13.0/18 and took the pole position going into the blitz. He was followed by Wesley So on 12 and Vladimir Fedoseev on 11. India's D. Gukesh is on 9 points and is in joint 4th position. With 18 rounds of blitz left, there is everything to play for. This is what transpired on day 3.

Chola Chess Club in Chennai draws huge crowd on its very first day

The Chola Chess Club officially began on 2nd May 2026 at Phoenix Marketcity Mall in Chennai. The club is a part of the CSR activities of the Cholamandalam Finance Group. It is supported by ChessBase India and Chess Gurukul. It is absolutely free and open to all. The opening day saw players of all ages come together to enjoy chess in a relaxed atmosphere. The special guest for the day was young chess talent Sarbartho Mani, who added to the excitement by playing with visitors. The King Returns: Magnus Carlsen Clinches TePe Sigeman & Co. 2026 in Dramatic Tiebreak

Magnus Carlsen defeated Arjun Erigaisi in the Blitz Playoff to win the 31st TePe Sigeman & Co. 2026. Even after taking a break from Classical Chess, whenever Magnus comes back to play, he is considered the main contender. Magnus always proves it to be right. After getting a shocking loss against Jorden van Foreest in the 4th round, Magnus came back and won 3 games on demand. Going into the last round, Arjun Erigaisi was leading with a half point over Magnus and Yagiz. Arjun drew his game against Woodward, and Magnus won against Yagiz to force a blitz playoff. Arjun Erigaisi scored a huge win over Zhu Jiner in the penultimate round of TePe Sigeman & Co 2026 to gain the sole half-point lead going into the final round. Arjun is currently on an unbeaten 4.5/6 points, and in the last round he will face Andy Woodward with white pieces. In the penultimate round, Carlsen won against Andy Woodward with black pieces, and he is trying to catch Arjun with 4/6 points, as he is in joint second place with Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, and both players are paired up against each other for the last round.
