There were no eye-popping results or games in the show, but one look at the tournament hall and you can say that the chess future of our country is safe. The third round at the Gibraltar Masters turned out to be an excellent one for Indians. Harika was surely the performer of the day as she played a nearly flawless game against Nigel Short. Vishy Anand showed exactly why he was rated 340 points above his opponent and Aravindh Chithambaram once again impressed us with his imaginative attacking abilities. Adhiban lost his previous round game to Jorden van Foreest. This meant that Eltaj Safarli caught up with him on the leaderboard with 6.5/9. As luck would have it Eltaj and Adhiban faced off against each other in the tenth round and the Indian player emerged victorious, thereby cementing his chances for a first place finish with three rounds to go. Russian GM Vladimir Belous (2557) won the 8th Chennai Open 2016 by a half-point margin after he scored 8.5/10. However, the 'hero' of the tournament was IM Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman who scored 8.0/10 to finish third on tiebreak. Her sublime show was the best among the Indians, by miles! This tourney began a day after the one in Delhi finished – on 18 January – and for players searching for their GM and IM norms, this was a wonderful opportunity to play two back-to-back tournaments of a very high caliber. The Keres Memorial- ACP Open 2016 was held from the 7th-10th of January 2016. Surya Shekhar Ganguly and Padmini Rout were the only two Indian representatives at the event. They played some fantastic chess and came back with great laurels. While Ganguly finished joint second, Padmini accounted for the biggest scalp of her chess career!
