National Teams 01: shaky yet solid

The National Teams Championship kicked off here at Bhubaneshwar with top organisations like PSPB and Railways sending strong teams in order to win this thirty-sixth edition. There are two sections -- Open and Women. The Open has eleven grandmasters and seventeen International Masters, meanwhile the Women's section has four International Masters and three Women Grand Masters and is being conducted at the KIIT law College in Bhubaneshwar, Orissa. IIFL Wealth 09: Nail-biter!

IIFL Wealth 08: Aditya Mittal takes flight!

Hikaru Nakamura won the Gibraltar Masters 2016 in great style. For Indians it was a highly successful event as 16 out of the 21 players, we had out there, increased their rating. Sethuraman was the best performer finishing fourth, while Harikrishna settled for fifth. IIFL Wealth 06+07: Entertaining Chess!

Chess, entertainment, happiness -- the players and parents of the juniors at the IIFL Wealth Mumbai International and Junior Tournament are having a gala time as the event approaches its final leg. The Junior tournament has a handful of leaders, with no clarity on how the tournament will end while the Open saw G.A. Stany taking the lead by beating Shardul Gagare, but then losing to Swapnil Dhopade to allow him and Himal Gusain to share the lead with 6.5/7. An illustrated report.

Hari in a hurry!

Harikrishna played the London System against Vidit Gujrathi and was able to subdue him with some nice attacking moves. With this win, Hari moves into the leaders pack with 6.5/8. Sethuraman and Abhijeet Gupta follow him on six points. The reason why today can be a big day for chess in India is that Harikrishna has a chance to overtake Anand on the live Elo rating list. IIFL Wealth 05: more than just a sport

Chess is not just about beating your opponent. It is more than just a sport -- it is an epicenter that brings people together. The IIFL Wealth Mumbai International in progress at Mount Litera School International is beginning to show people the real value that chess creates for the society. While a handful of kids share the lead in the Junior section, the Open saw its first sole leader in IM G.A. Stany, who has touched 5.0/5 and has kindly annotated his game for you. Four Indians at top in Gibraltar

After seven rounds Anton Guijarro leads the super strong Gibraltar Chess festival with 6.0/7. Four Indians, Harikrishna, Sethuraman, Vidit and Abhijeet Gupta follow on the leader's heels with 5.5/7. Vishy Anand is currently languishing on 4.0/7 after he lost to Benjamin Gledura in the seventh round. We have game analysis and some selected pictures from the event.

The Challenger is now a Master!

It was edge of the seat entertainment as the last round of the Tata Steel Challengers saw three players with a chance to win the title. In the end it was the 23-year-old from Chennai who drew his final round game and came out victorious. B. Adhiban not only played some great games of chess but also defended skillfully in nearly lost positions. His fighting abilities and never-say-die spirit are the reasons why he has earned a spot in the next years Masters! We have the final report and a short interview with the winner.

The story of the third and the fourth round was obviously Shardul becoming a grandmaster, but what Shardul has done unknowingly is make a some two hundred more kids  dream of becoming like him. The IIFLW Mumbai Open and Junior tournaments are held from the 28th of January to 5th of February 2015. It is one of the highest prize money tournaments in the world for the junior section.
