The World Rapid and Blitz Championship 2016 was a cornucopia of some of the finest chess players that our generation has seen. Irfan Mothi Memon, a chess enthusiast, from India, who works in Doha, decided to pay a visit to the tournament hall. At the end of the day he managed to take pictures with three World Champions! Irfan speaks about his experience of meeting these stars and also has some tips that will prove invaluable when meeting Vishy, Magnus, Sergey of Chucky!

Karjakin ends the year as the Blitz World Champion!

Magnus Carlsen and Sergey Karjakin were locked in an epic race at the World Blitz Championship 2016. None of them was ready to let the other escape with the lead. While it was Magnus who lead the event for most of the duration, it was Karjakin who won the all important last round against Jobava and became the World Blitz Champion. Carlsen had to settle for the silver while Dubov won the bronze. In women's section it was Anna Muzychuk who scored a double by winning the gold in both the events. GM Sriram Jha wins Bhopal Open 2016

GM Sriram Jha won the 4th Bhopal Open 2016 held from the 20th-25th of December 2016. He scored 8.5/10 and emerged ahead of Srinath Rao thanks to a better tiebreak. His last round win against Anup Deshmukh was a perfect demonstration of what Sriram is so good at. Simple, purposeful and logical play. Vassily Ivanchuk through the eyes of a photographer

When Vassily Ivanchuk won the World Rapid Championships 2016, photographer Amruta Mokal felt really happy. Although she wanted Vishy to win, it's not often that you see a 47-year-old beating young guys and finishing ahead of them in rapid chess. Amruta sent us some of the pictures that she had taken of the Ukrainian grandmaster at the Qatar Masters 2015. Blitz day one: Indians sizzle at the start, fizzle towards the end!

The World Blitz Championships is a 21 round event with a time control of 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment. The day started excellently for almost all of the Indian players as they defeated one higher rated player after another. However, soon they were out of steam and pushed back. Harika was the best performer in the women's section. Anand with 7.5/12 lead the Indian pack in open followed by Ganguly and Lalith. World Rapid 11-15: Ivanchuk wins the title, Vidit wins hearts!

47-year-old Vassily Ivanchuk won the World Rapid title by scoring 11.0/15. Somewhere in the same playing hall a boy not even half his age was winning hearts. 22-year-old Vidit Gujrathi won a lot of hearts at the event by beating world class opponents like Jobava, Wojtaszek, MVL, and Radjabov. We have analysis of Vidit's nerve-wracking encounter with Magnus Carlsen and also entertaining pictures, and complete results of Indian participants.

G. Akash wins the grand Hyderabad affair

The biggest prize money tournament of Telangana "Hyderabad Open Fide Rating Chess Tournament" was an event worth playing. It was lavish, grand, glittery with hundreds of prizes, gala inauguration and PD functions. Cash prize of 8 lakhs each, was divided into two tournaments, open and below 1500. There were around 250 participants in Open category and massive 750 players in below 1500 making it the highest number of participants in the history of Telangana. Three rounds have come to close at the 2nd IIFL Wealth Mumbai International Open 2016-17 with a host of minor upsets. The third round even saw some grandmasters take a beating against Indian youngsters. But it is not just about the youngsters. Express Report: Vassily Ivanchuk is the World Rapid Champion

Vassily Ivanchuk is the new World Rapid Champion. He beat Hrant Melkumyan in the last round, scored 11.0/15 and won the title on a superior tiebreak. The silver went to Alexander Grischuk and the bronze to Magnus Carlsen. Vidit Gujrathi performed phenomenally and finished eighth. In the women's section the gold went to Anna Muzychuk, silver to Alexandra Kosteniuk and bronze to Nana Dzagnidze. Express Report.

The World Rapid and Blitz Championship will take place from the 26th of December 2016 in Doha, Qatar. It is a five day event with three days dedicated to decide the World Rapid Champion and two days for the World Blitz. Vishy Anand is heading the Indian challenge with strong players like Vidit, Adhiban and Ganguly in the fray. Humpy and Harika will fight for top honours in the women's section. Live games begin each day at 17.30 IST (15.00 Qatar time) and you can follow them here. 

World Rapid 6-10: Endgame guru Vidit outfoxes Wojtaszek and MVL

You know that a young talent is becoming a big boy when he starts beating the big boys! This is exactly whats happening with Vidit Gujrathi. After getting better of Jobava, Artemiev and Akopian on day one, he upped his game and beat Wojtaszek and Vachier-Lagrave! He is on 7.0/10 and so is Vishy Anand. Ivanchuk is leading in the open section with 8.0/10 and Anna Muzychuk is cruising ahead with 7.0/8. We have a detailed report with some excellent photography by Maria Emelianova.

Sauravh Kherdekar wins 2nd RBK International

It was a cliff hanger as Sauravh Kherdekar and Rahul Sangma both won their games to race ahead with 7.5/8 at the 2nd RBK International 2016. In came Rakesh Kulkarni and beat Sangma, which cleared the path for Kherdekar. The experienced Sauravh maintained his calm and with an excellent performance won the event with 9.0/10.
