Laxman R R dominates 17th BRDCA Rapid Rating Open 2022

GM Laxman R R scored an unbeaten 9/10 to win 17th BRDCA Rapid Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Second seed of the tournament, GM Sankalp Gupta and IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete scored 8.5/10 each. They secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. Sankalp remained undefeated too. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹400000. The top three prizes were ₹51000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each. He played for Armenia, and won multiple medals at the Olympiads before he moved to the United States. Aronian has played some brilliant games at the Olympiads against very high-quality opposition. Invincible Pranav Venkatesh wins Magnus Academy Challenge 2022, Bharath Subramaniyam third

GM Pranav Venkatesh scored an unbeaten 38/42 to win Challengers Chess Tour 2022 Magnus Chess Academy Challenge. One must not forget that he is also playing in the World Youth Under-16 Olympiad for India on the same day. Thus, this triumph makes it that much more special. His performance is on par with Esipenko's win in the Julius Baer Challenge last month. Since the total number of players was one less than the previous event, thus the number of rounds also got reduced by one. Perhaps if there were one more round, Pranav could have tied Esipenko's score. IM Ihor Samunenkov (UKR) scored 35/42 to finish second and GM Bharath Subramaniyam H finished third with a score of 28/42. Photo: chess24

Novy Bor Chess Club wins European Club Cup 2022 Open with a perfect score

Pentala Harikrishna scored an important victory in the final round against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. Novy Bor Chess Club defeated Asnieres Le Grand Echiquier 3.5-2.5 in the final round to win European Chess Club Cup 2022 with a perfect score 14/14. Vidit Gujrathi's fantastic six game winning streak came to an end against Andrey Esipenko. Apart from Harikrishna, David Anton Guijarro scored the only other win for the team to ensure the Czech team win the title for the second time after nine years. Magnus Carlsen won the first prize for his individual performance of 83.3% on Board no.1. Abhijeet Gupta deservedly clinches 1st Bikaner GM Open 2022

GM Abhijeet Gupta drew with GM Boris Savchenko in the final round to win 1st Bikaner GM Open 2022. The five-time Commonwealth Gold medalist, scored an unbeaten 8.5/10, finished a half point ahead of the competition. IM Arash Tahbaz (IRI) and GM Boris Savchenko scored 8/10 and 7/10 each to secure second and third places respectively. GM Deepan Chakkravarthy 7/10 and IM Anuj Shrivatri 6.5/10 are the only two other Indians to make a top 10 finish. They were placed seventh and tenth according to tie-breaks. World Youth U16 Olympiad 2022 R8: India strikes back against Kyrgyzstan

India bounced back strong to whitewash Kyrgyzstan in the penultimate round of FIDE World Youth Under-16 Olympiad 2022. GM Pranav Venkatesh, IM Pranesh M, FM Harshad S and Tanisha S Boramanikar - all four won their respective games. Turkiye-Red also registered a 4-0 victory over Uzbekistan-2 to win the Gold with a round to spare. They will face India in the final round. The champion team makes one change on the fourth board while India continues with their same line up. Currently India is in tied third place with Azerbaijan-1 at 11/16. A win in the last round will increase their medal chances, whereas a draw might also turn out to be enough since India has a good tie-break score. We also briefly discuss the composers and try to understand how they can turn positions from games into original compositions. Like in the previous article, we also have an assortment of flavours here. Some of the studies are concrete and tactical, while others are a bit on the technical side. However, regardless of style, each composition is deeply instructional, and you can be sure to come out wiser as a chess player if you go through them all.

Vidit Gujrathi is on fire at European Chess Club Cup 2022. He scored a double hat-trick by defeating GM Yuriy Kryvoruchko. Currently, he is India no.3 and World no.20 in the live ratings, and the only player in the entire tournament to score 6/6. His team Novy Bor Chess Club scored another dominating victory 4.5-1.5 over Schachclub Viernheim 1934 e.V. in the penultimate round. They are now two points ahead of the competition at 12/12. Novy Bor needs a draw in the final round to become a clear champion. However, a loss might also be enough to win it on tie-breaks. Obviously nobody would want after having such a fantastic run. Magnus Academy Challenge 2022 R1-8: Pranav, Ilamparthi and Bharath in a four-way lead

GM Pranav Venkatesh scored 19/21 on the first day of Challengers Chess Tour 2022 Magnus Chess Academy Challenge. Since it is a 15-player round robin event, in each round one player gets a mandatory Bye. Thus, Pranav got one on the first day and he played seven games, unlike the remaining three leaders - IM Ihor Samunenkhov (UKR), the World Under-14 Open champion, Ilamparthi A R and India's 73rd GM Bharath Subramaniyam H. Those three players scored six wins, a draw and lost a game each. WIM Vishwa Vasnawala got herself a very good opportunity to beat the World's youngest GM Abhimanyu Mishra in the fifth round. After an emphatic victory in the sixth round, India lost to Uzbekistan-1 in the seventh round of FIDE World Youth Under-16 Olympiad 2022. GM Pranav V scored the sole win for the team. IM Pranesh M and Mrittika Mallick lost their respective games and FM Harshad S drew. Turkiye-Red continues their dominance as they defeated Iran 3-1. The sole leaders are now three points ahead of the competition at 14/14. India is currently tied at fifth place 9/14 with four other teams - Iran, Azerbaijan-1, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova. Abhijeet Gupta on the verge of winning 1st Bikaner GM Open 2022

GM Abhijeet Gupta defeated FM Ram Aravind L N to be one step closer to winning 1st Bikaner GM Open 2022. Playing with white pieces, Ram Aravind was determined to make the most out of his opportunity. It was evident that he was playing for a win. He created opportunities for himself but alas he made a positional mistake which allowed the well-experienced GM to get back in the game and claim the full point. This loss did not deter the teenager's norm chances. He earned his final IM-norm and now requires to fulfil the rating requirement to become India's next International Master. Chess Artistry Adventure Part II - Deeper Into the Jungle

Judit Polgar's Global Chess Festival is being held in Budapest, Hungary, on the 8th of October this year. Among other things, the current edition of the annual gala is hosting a study composing cum exhibition event called Chess Artistry Adventure. The artful program in memory of the late Pal Benko has received fourteen original studies from some of the best composers in the world. In an article we published last month, four of these were explained in detail. Today, as it were, we venture deeper into the forest and tackle some more from the rest of them. What follows is some high-class chess, with difficulty ranging from the guilefully complex to the tortuously analytical—nothing remotely facile, nothing for the faint-hearted!

World Youth U16 Olympiad 2022 R6: India squashes Mongolia

Mongolia got crushed by India 1-3 in the sixth round of FIDE World Youth Under-16 Olympiad 2022. GM Pranav V, IM Pranesh M and Mrittika Mallick - all three of them scored emphatic victories over their respective opponents. Rohit S suffered the sole loss. Turkiye-Red maintains their sole lead with a perfect 12/12. Four teams - India, Iran, Uzbekistan-1 and Azerbaijan-1 are currently sharing second place 9/12.
