John Paul Wallace wins 6th Kragero Resort Open 2023, Leon third

IM John Paul Wallace (AUS) headed into the final round of 6th Kragero Resort Open 2023 with a full point lead 7/8. Despite losing the final round game to GM Titas Stremavicius (LTU), John still managed to finish first on tie-breaks, Titas was placed second. Seven players - GM Leon Luke Mendonca, GM Kaido Kulaots (EST), GM Lucas van Foreest (NED), GM Visakh N R, GM Valery Kazakouski (LTU), IM Elham Abdulrauf (NOR) and FM Saad Abobaker Elmi (NOR) finished with 6.5/9. ChessBase India launches its first physical academy in Bhopal

Until now ChessBase India has majorly done its training online. We have been doing it via our YouTube channels, website, social media and also the ChessRanga training platform that we are building. March 2023 becomes the month when we launch our first ever physical academy. And we have begun with Bhopal. Why did we select this city? The main reason is that Niklesh Jain and his better half Angela Franco live in the city and are working hard to strengthen the chess culture of the city with tournaments, activities in schools and much more. Building a physical academy where we will have our regular camps is a step in the direction of imparting high quality chess training at affordable costs, not just for the people of Bhopal, but all across India. The details of the first camp are given below. 

Shaastra IIT Madras invites you to participate in 5th Shaastra Rapid Rating Open 2023

Shaastra IIT Madras invites all chess players around the world in the fifth edition of Shaastra Rapid Rating Open 2023. It is scheduled to take place on 11th and 12th March 2023. This the only IIT which organizes an Open Rapid Rating event every year. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, the tournament could not take place in the last two years. This year the total prize fund is ₹500000, a huge increase of 66.67% worth ₹200000 since the previous edition held in 2020. So far five GMs, six IMs, a WGM and two WIMs have already confirmed their participation. The total number of players increase every year by a lot. Last edition had a total 440 players. Pravaha Foundation announces Rs.2 crore sponsorship for women in Indian chess

Recently we published an article where we spoke about how MGD1, a chess first e-sports company, had secured Rs.12.4 crore sponsorship for GM Arjun Erigaisi with Quantbox over a period of 5 years. Now MGD1 once again has contributed massively towards Indian chess, this time with the Pravaha Foundation, to power women's chess in the country. The sponsorship program has a budget of Rs.2 crore for 2 years and a major chunk of it goes to two of India's finest talents - Savitha Shri and Vantika Agrawal. A portion of this amount also goes towards four young talents - three of them are talented girls - Charvi, Shubhi Gupta, Saparya Ghosh and one of them is a talented boy - Ilamparthi AR. A cakewalk for Phani Kanuri of AP at 1st Tirupattur Rapid Rating Open 2023

46-year-old Phani Kanuri scored 7.5/8 to win 1st Tirupattur Rapid Rating Open 2023. The 11th seeded 1464 rated scored seven straight wins before splitting the point in the final round to become a clear champion. Five players scored 7/9. Out of them Vigneshwaran S and the top seed of the tournament Phoobalan P were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. The top three finishers remained undefeated. This is Phani's first tournament victory since April 2018. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹15000, ₹13000 and ₹11000 along with a trophy each. ONGC Sports Scholarship Scheme 2023-24

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has announced their sports scholarship scheme. The scholarship is valid for any chess player between the age of 10 and 25 years. A total of six scholarships will be granted based on merit to both men and women in three different categories. Economically Weaker Section will be given a preference. Applications will only be accepted via online methods. Praggnanandhaa teams up with Carlsen for the first time for Offerspill and wins Norwegian Elite League 2022-23

R Praggnanandhaa battled against Magnus Carlsen plenty of times in Champions Chess Tour. The two faced each other in consecutive Tata Steel Chess Masters in 2022 and 2023. However, the one thing the teenager had not done before was to team up with the five-time world champion. In a statistical sense, the significance of online events might decay in value over time as they are not rated events, one thing which will stand the test of time is, they both teaming up for the first time for Offerspill team and winning the Norwegian League for the first time in the club's history. Sammed Shete dominates Shri Maheshwaranand Saraswati Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2023

IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete scored 8.5/9 and remained undefeated to win Shri Maheshwaranand Saraswati Memorial Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. FM Ritviz Parab and IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni scored 8/9 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. Both took a no-draw approach and suffered a loss each. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹160000. The top three prizes were ₹50000 + trophy, ₹25000 and ₹15000 each respectively. 14-year-old Arvind Iyer scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Surya Trophy Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. The teenager had a half point lead going into the final round. He drew with the eventual runner-up Maulik Raval to become a clear champion. Apart from Maulik, Shaikh Sohil, Ankit Chudasama and Shailesh Rawal also scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹100000. The top three prizes were ₹11000, ₹9000 and ₹7000 along with a trophy each. Jules Moussard wins Djerba Chess Festival Masters 2023, Nihal Sarin third

Jules Moussard defeated Maxime Lagarde 2-0 in the final to win Djerba Chess Festival Masters 2023. Nihal Sarin topped the group stage with an unbeaten 5/7, followed by Jules and Aryan Tari at 4.5/7 each. The 44th Olympiad individual Gold medalist, Nihal lost to Maxime 0.5-1.5 in the Semifinal. He faced Tari in a 3rd-4th place match which the teenager won 1.5-0.5 to finish third. The total prize fund of the entire festival was over €15000 (49500 TND). China to host Women's Candidates Final and Women's World Championship Match

The Women's World Championship Match will be played in Shanghai and Chongqing, China from 3rd to 25th July 2023. The reigning Women's World Championn, Ju Wenjun will face the winner of FIDE Women's Candidates 2022-23 final between Lei Tingjie and Tan Zhongyi which will take place in Chongqing from 27th March to 6th April 2023. Wenjun has already defeated Zhongyi to dethrone her World title reign in 2018. Will Zhongyi be able to set up a rematch by winning the Candidates Final? Nilanta Chanda wins Chess for Everyone Rating Open in Srinagar

Nilanta Chanda extended his sole lead by a full point 7.5/8 heading into the final round. Four players were in pursuit at 6.5/8 each. A last round loss against Faisal Farooq did not deter his championship chances. Nilanta won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Zeeshan Ali lost to Javed Ahmed Mir. Both Javed and Faisal ended up scoring 7.5/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. The top three prizes were ₹3000, ₹2000 and ₹1000 along with a trophy each. SRM IST Chennai becomes All India Inter University Women Chess Champion 2023

The defending champion Adamas University and SRM Institute of Science and Technology Chennai scored 8/10. SRM won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. They scored more game points than Adamas. Thus, the only unbeaten team of the tournament, Adamas had to settle for second place. University of Madras edged past University of Mumbai and University of Delhi on tie-breaks to finish third with a score of 7/10. Krithigga K (SRM IST), WIM Arpita Mukherjee (Adamas), Sudipa Haldar (University of Calcutta), Poorna Sri M K (SRM IST), Divyabharathi Masanam (University of Madras) and Chetana D (Osmania University) won individual Gold on Board no. 1-6 each respectively.
