Velammal Nexus felicitates Gukesh

Velammal School in Chennai, a part of the Velammal Nexus group is a landmark in Indian chess history by all counts. The number of top-level Grandmasters who have come from the Chennai school is huge! One of their brightest students is Gukesh D, the 16-year-old phenomenon who won an Individual Gold medal in Board 1 at the Chennai Chess Olympiad 2022. The World's third-youngest Grandmaster recently became the youngest player to defeat the World Champion Magnus Carlsen! Gukesh was felicitated recently by the Velammal Nexus School, in the presence of 5-time World Champion and FIDE Deputy President, Viswanathan Anand.

India wins 43 medals at Asian Schools Chess Championships 2022

India has won a massive 43 medals including 20 individual (10 Gold, 6 Silver and 4 Bronze) medals, 23 team (8 Gold, 10 Silver and 5 Bronze) medals at Asian Schools Chess Championships 2022. Sharvaanica A S is the only Indian who has won a Gold medal in all three formats - Classical, Rapid and Blitz in Under-9 Girls category. She won Gold with a perfect score of 9/9, 7/7 and 7/7 respectively. Sidhant Rana won two Gold and a Silver medal, Vedika won a Gold and two Silver. Chessable Sunway Sitges Open R4: Aditya Samant sensational against Adhiban

Six players are at a 100% score after the fourth round of Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022 Group A. GM Abhimanyu Puranik, IM Aditya S Samant and GM Karthikeyan Murali are the three Indians among them. Aditya scored a fantastic victory over GM B Adhiban. He is currently the sole IM among the pack. The 16-yeara-old will face fellow countryman Karthikeyan in the fifth round. Abhimanyu will be going against GM Kirill Alekseenko. India's sole National Triple Crown champion, GM Aravindh Chithambaram held top seed of the tournament and China no.2 Yangyi Yu to a draw. Neelash Saha wins Tata Steel Chess Festival 2022 Rapid Rating Open

Five players scored 7/8 at the Tata Steel Chess Festival 2022 All India Rapid Rating Open. They are - IM Neelash Saha, Subhayan Kundu, IM Aronyak Ghosh, Kaustuv Kundu and Swapan Mitra. Neelash, Subhayan and Aronyak secured first, second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Top three remained undefeated. A total of 174 players including 3 IMs and two WIMs took part in this eight-round Rapid Rating tournament with a time control of 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment each. 19 players have made a perfect start of 3/3 at Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022 Group A. 17-year-old Kushal O is the sole untitled player is among them. He defeated FM Jana Schneider (GER, 2272), IM Thomas E Rendle (ENG, 2381) and IM Gerard Ayats Llobera (ESP, 2464). The Gran Hotel Bali Aficionados B winner, is already gaining 114 Elo rating points. His next round opponent GM Andrey Esipenko will be the first GM of the event he is going to face. GM Abhimanyu Puranik, IM Aditya S Samant, GM B Adhiban, GM Aravindh Chithambaram and GM Karthikeyan Murali are the remaining Indians at 3/3. Round 4 starts tonight at 9 p.m. IST. Kushal dominates 19th Gran Hotel Bali Aficionados B, Aditya Varun Gampa second in Group A and Blitz

17-year-old Kushal O scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 19th Gran Hotel Bali Aficionados B group. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Aditya Varun Gampa finished second in both Group A and Blitz Nocturno. He scored 7/9 and 7/8 in those two events respectively. CM Md. Imran won the Blitz event scoring 7/8. The top three prizes in the Aficionados B group were €3100, €1400 and €1200 each. For Group A the prizes were, €1300, €1100 and €1000 each. For Blitz, it was €90, €60 and €50. All podium winners won a trophy along with their respective cash prizes. This was Kushal's first overseas triumph of his career and first Blitz tournament victory of the year for Imran. Praggnanandhaa wins Julius Baer Challenger Championship

Praggnanandhaa started the day with a loss against Pranav Venkatesh in the third match. It took a game for Praggnanandhaa to adjust to the new time control as he mentioned in the post-match interview. He won the next two games convincingly to ensure he scores a minimum 2.5 points in three matches. Thus, he won the Julius Baer Challenger Championship. Pranav might have lost this match, however he still has the spot at the Champions Chess Tour 2023 which he earned by winning the Challengers Chess Championship 2022. Praggnanandhaa went on to do great things in the 2022 season including winning against Carlsen three times consecutively. Pranav would also like to level up and seize his opportunity. Photo: chess24

GM Mihail Nikitenko scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 and finished two points ahead of the field to win CFSL Golden Jubilee Open 2022. GM Thej Kumar M S scored sole 6.5/9 to secure second place. Four players scored 6/9 including Sri Lanka no.2 FM Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage. Veteran GM Alexei Barsov (UZB) secured third place due to better tie-breaks. The total cash prize fund of the tournament was LKR 3,650,000 (US$ 10000). Julius Baer Challenger Championship: Praggnanandhaa takes 2-0 lead

Praggnanandhaa made a short work of Pranav Venkatesh in the second match at Julius Baer Challenger Championship. The Asian Continental 2022 champion won both games convincingly. In the first game, Pranav made an incorrect decision at a critical juncture. He was unable to make the most out of the white pieces in the second game as Praggnanandhaa equalized easily out of the opening. Pranav now must win the next two Blitz matches to keep his chances. Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi and the top seed of the tournament, IM Ravi Teja S scored an unbeaten 8/9. The sixth round battle between them ended in a draw. Aakash won the SAS Ventures 2nd Rapid Rating Open 2022 on tie-breaks and Ravi was placed second. Four players scored 7.5/9. They are - IM Ratnakaran K, IM Nitin S, Lakshith B Salian and Advait Ratnakar Vibhute. Out of them Ratnakaran was adjudged third.The total cash prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000 and 176 prizes were up for grabs. Saidakbar Saydaliev clinches Benidorm Open 2022, Ajay Karthikeyan third

IM Saidakbar Saydaliev and IM Bobir Sattarov, both Uzbeks scored 7.5/9 each. Saidakbar won the Benidorm Open A according to tie-breaks, Bobir was placed second. IM Ajay Karthikeyan S defeated IM Ernesto J Fernandez Guillen (CUB) in the final round to finish third 6.5/9, edging past two more players who finished with the same score. The top three prizes in Group A were €5000, €3000 and €1200 along with a trophy each. 14-year-old Derin Goktepe (USA) won the Group B (<2000) with a perfect score 9/9. 17-year-old Simhadri Sai Hrushikesh scored sole 7.5/9 to finish second. Praggnanandhaa won the first match against Pranav Venkatesh at Julius Baer Challenger Championship. The former won the first match convincingly with a score of 2.5-0.5. The Asian Continental champion won the first game, Pranav managed to draw the second. He would have been able to draw the third game too. However, a draw would have resulted in a match loss anyway, so he made a desperate attempt to win the game for which he paid a heavy price by losing the game again. SAIF Sporting Club ends Bangladesh Police's dominant run at Bangladesh Premier League 2022

SAIF Sporting Club ended Bangladesh Police's dominant run at Bangabandhu Premier Division Chess League 2022. Bangladesh Police has been winning the Bangladesh Premier League for the past three editions and remained unbeaten while doing so since 2019. SSC started their event by beating the defending champion Bangladesh Police convincingly 3.5-0.5 in the second round. SAIF SC scored an unbeaten 18/20 to become clear champion. Bangladesh Police and debutant in the Premier Division, Palli Sanchoy Bank scored 16/20 and 15/20 to secure second and third place respectively.
