Tata Steel 2023 R6: So and Caruana win, Abdusattorov still in sole lead

Wesley So and Fabiano Caruana are the two victors of the sixth round at 85th Tata Steel Chess Masters 2023. Vincent Keymer went wrong in the endgame which cost him the full point against So. D Gukesh made some wrong calls early in the middlegame which gave his opponent, the former World Championship Challenger, a substantial positional advantage. Arjun Erigaisi had another exciting draw, this time against Anish Giri. R Praggnanandhaa drew his game against the sole leader of the tournament, Nodirbek Abdusattorov. IM Vaishali, GM Donchenko and GM Erwin scored a win each in the Challenger section. Mumbai's 2nd GM Aditya Mittal to be felicitated by Mumbai's 1st GM Pravin Thipsay

The ChessBase India Chess Club at Phoenix Marketcity, Mumbai is going to host an epic event on 21st of January 2023. 16-year-old Aditya Mittal became India's 77th GM and Mumbai's 2nd GM recently. He will be felicitated by Mumbai's 1st GM Pravin Thipsay. But before the felicitation Aditya will be playing a clock simul against 10 opponents with 1 hour each! The idea is to give a chance to some of the most regular players of the club to cross swords and learn from one of the best youngsters of Indian chess. IM Sagar Shah will commentate on the simul. The event is open and free for all the chess lovers to come and visit!

Khelo Chess India Late R Satyamurthy Memorial Rapid Open to take place this Sunday 22nd January

Last month ChessBase India started the journey of Khelo Chess India at Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh.  The first edition comprised a chess workshop, a blindfold match and a simultaneous exhibition match with few selected school children. The second event will be a rapid tournament. It will be held in memory of Late R Satyamurthy. He was the first national level player of the state. He led the state in the National Senior Championship in 1959 while working for the Indian Railways back then. He made great efforts to promote chess in Bhopal. The one-day seven round Rapid tournnament will take place on Sunday 22nd January 2023 at Minaleswar Temple Hall.

Tata Steel Masters 2023 R5: Abdusattorov beats Carlsen, gains sole lead and now World no.18

The 44th Olympiad Gold medalist, Nodirbek Abdusattorov defeated Magnus Carlsen in fifth round of 85th Tata Steel Masters 2023. The former World Rapid champion won against the reigning champion similarly as his first win back at World Rapid 2021. The world no.1 could not navigate a way to bring his king to g7 or h7 in the queen endgame, which would have been a theoretical draw as mentioned by the teenager. Speaking of teenagers, Arjun Erigaisi had an exciting game against Ding Liren which the former saved from the brink of a loss. Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa drew with Rapport and Giri respectively. Astana to host FIDE World Championship match 2023

The FIDE World Championship 2023 is due to take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, from April 7th to May 1st. A new World Champion will be crowned, as Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren will battle to seize the throne left vacant by Magnus Carlsen’s withdrawal. The General Partner of the event, which boasts a sensational prize fund of 2 million euros, will be NASDAQ-listed firm Freedom Holding Corp, a US-based corporation with Kazakh roots that provides financial services. Tata Steel Challengers 2023 R5: Vaishali splits the point with Adhiban

IM Vaishali R had her second scoring game at Tata Steel Challengers 2023. She had a peaceful draw with GM B Adhiban in the fifth round. The reigning Turkey champion, GM Mustafa Yilmaz defeated the highest rated player of the section, GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI). Mustafa has gained an early sole lead 4/5. The other two victors of the round were IM Thomas Beerdsen (NED) and GM Javokhir Sindarov (UZB). IM Eline Roebers missed a great opportunity to convert her chance against Beerdsen. Jaiveer Mahendru clinches 360 One Mumbai Junior U-13 Rating 2022

Jaiveer Mahendru scored 8/9 and remained undefeated to win 360 One Mumbai Junior U-13 Rating Tournament 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Paras Dilip Bhoir, Sneha Halder and Siddhanth Poonja scored 7.5/9. They were placed second to fourth according to the tie-breaks. Jaiveer drew with Paras in the final round as it was enough for him to become a clear champion. The six-day nine-round rating tournament was organized by Indian Chess School at World Trade Center in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Total prize fund of the tournament was ₹250000. Tata Steel 2023 R4: Praggnanandhaa stuns World no.2 Ding Liren, Giri beats Carlsen

R Praggnanandhaa scored his biggest Classical win of his career in the fourth round of 85th Tata Steel Masters 2023. The teenager grinded a relatively balanced rook, knight and many pawns endgame to beat the World no.2 and World Championship Contender, Ding Liren. Anish Giri beat Magnus Carlsen for the second time in his career in a Classical encounter, exactly after 12 years. The World no.7 has beaten the World no.1 in Blitz but Classical chess is what matters the most to any strong player. This event is called the 'Wimbledon of Chess' for a reason - it is where the mighty fall and new heroes are born. Abdusattorov defeated Parham to join the lead with Giri 3/4. Delving deep into the Arjun Erigaisi vs Levon Aronian endgame from Tata Steel Masters 2023

Arjun Erigaisi reached an extremely difficult endgame against Levon Aronian in the third round of the Tata Steel Masters 2023. Many players would have collapsed, but the 19-year-old Indian talent is a tough nut to crack. He held his own and managed to draw the game. After the game you could see Arjun and Levon analyzing the game, trying to understand what exactly was happening. But it was all just to complex to figure out without an engine. IM Sagar Shah spent a lot of time on this endgame in his LIVE commentary and then also spent another 4 hours next day morning to go to the depth of the position and share the findings with you. Sourabh Mhamane scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 360 One Mumbai Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Akshit Jha scored sole 7.5/9 to finish second. Four players finished at 7/9. IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni secured the third place due to better tie-breaks. Sourabh drew with Akshit in the final round and defeated Vikramaditya in the previous. Tata Steel 2023 R3: Caruana joins the leaders

Fabiano Caruana scored the sole victory of the round in the Masters section. In an unclear position, Tata Steel Chess Masters 2021 winner, Jorden van Foreest blundered a pawn. Arjun Erigaisi almost stumbled his way in the endgame. The win was not easy to find for Aronian and the game ended in a draw. Gukesh had a solid draw with Abdusattorov. Praggnanandhaa could have pressed further if he had not traded the rook in the endgame against Keymer. B Adhiban drew with Donchenko and Vaishali lost to Sindarov. Kushagra Mohan wins 1st Bishan Singh Memorial Rating Open 2023

Top seed of the tournament, IM Kushagra Mohan, IM Chakravarthi Reddy M and second seeded IM Himal Gusain scored an unbeaten 8/9 each. Kushagra won the 1st Bishan Singh Ji Memorial Rating Open 2023. Chakravarthi and Himal were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. This is also Kushagra's first Rating Openn tournament triumph. The five-day nine-round rating tournament was organized by V4 Chess - Deccan Chess Academy, Maestro Chess Academy and Chess Maverics at Sri Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad, Telangana. Tata Steel 2023 R2: Anish Giri plays spectacularly against Gukesh

It is not everyday we get to see Anish Giri sacrificing a piece, let alone three. In the second round of 85th Tata Steel Chess 2023, Giri defeated Gukesh by making a thematic knight, followed by two rook sacrifices for a queen. In a post-game interview, Giri mentioned that it was part of his preparation. 17...Kh8 only invited the trouble. Arjun Erigaisi made an impressive draw against Wesley So in their first-ever Classical encounter. According to So, a lot of players would not have played 18...g5 which Arjun deemed to be a necessity.
