Airthings Masters 2023 LQF: Arjun Erigaisi eliminates Gukesh

Arjun Erigaisi defeated D Gukesh 1.5-0.5 in the Losers Quarterfinals. He will face Wesley So in the Losers Semifinals and the winner of that match will face Hikaru Nakamura. The reigning World Fischer Random champion, drew all four Rapid games against Magnus Carlsen. The Norwegian won the bid for Armageddon by 1 second and opted for Black. Carlsen missed several winning chances throughout the day, it was no different in Armageddon either. It ended in a draw and the World no.1 advanced to the Grand Final which will take place on Friday. Praggnanandhaa lost the Winners Final against Sam Sevian in Division 3. However, he Oleksandr Bortnyk and bounced back to the Grand Final to face Sevian again. Munich GP Round 6: Six draws

All six games of Round 6 ended in draws at Munich GP 2023. No one made any big mistake in all the games. Only GM Zhansaya Abdumalik and GM Harika Dronavalli had some upper hand against GM Alexandra Kosteniuk and GM Tan Zhongyi respectively. However, neither of them translated to anything substantial. Kosteniuk maintains her sole lead 5/6, followed by GM Nana Dzagnidze and GM Koneru Humpy at 3.5/6 each. Then six players are at 3/6 each. They are - GM Elisabeth Paehtz, GM Tan Zhongyi, GM Harika Dronavalli, GM Mariya Muzychuk, GM Anna Muzychuk and IM Alina Kashlinskaya. Round 7 starts today at 3 p.m. local time, 7:30 p.m. IST. Airthings Masters 2023 SF: Carlsen beats Arjun Erigaisi, will face Nakamura in the Finals

Arjun Erigaisi started the Airthings Masters 2023 Semifinal with a loss. He drew the second game against Magnus Carlsen and then beat him in the third. The fourth game ended in a draw which forced Armageddon. Arjun could only manage a draw in a must-win situation, although he was lost at one point. Thus, Arjun will now have to take the alternate path towards the Grand Final. He will face Alexey Sarana in the Losers Quarterfinal. Rauf Mamedov lost to D Gukesh 1-2. Thus, Gukesh will face Wesley So in the LQF, as he continues towards the Grand Final. Carlsen vs Nakamura in the Winners Final starts tonight from 9:30 p.m. IST. Stany G A wins Republic Day Cup Rapid Rating Open 2023

GM Stany G A and IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra scored an unbeaten 8/9 each. Due to better tie-breaks, Stany became champion at Republic Day Cup Rapid Rating Open 2023. FM Ritviz Parab and FM Sharan Rao scored 8/9 in the Blitz Open. They secured first and second place respectively. GM Stany G A scored sole 7.5/9 to finish third. The combined total prize fund of the Rapid Rating and Blitz Open was ₹230000. The world no.4 Alireza Firouzja lost to Arjun Erigaisi in three consecutive games at Airthings Masters 2023 Quarterfinals. Arjun played outstanding chess in all three games, seized his opportunities to a score a 0-3 whitewash. He will face the world no.1 Magnus Carlsen in the Semifinals. Carlsen defeated Alexey Sarana 2.5-0.5, although he was winning the third game too. D Gukesh lost to Hikaru Nakamura 0.5-2.5. He won the Swiss stage Play-in scoring an unbeaten 7.5/9 and finished a full point on 3rd February. On the very same day he defeated the 14th world champion, Vladimir Kramnik thrice. Harika Dronavalli got herself very close to ending Alexandra Kosteniuk's unbeaten streak. However, the former could not capitalize on her advantage and Kosteniuk escaped with a draw. She is still in the sole lead 4.5/5 and 1.5 points ahead of the field. GM Mariya Muzychuk could not spot her opponent IM Alina Kashlinskaya's blunder and eventually she went on the to win the game. Harikrishnan dominates Velammal Republic Day Celebration Rapid Rating Open 2023

Fourth seeded IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Velammal Republic Day Celebration Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Ajay Karthikeyan scored sole 8/9 to finish second. Three players - Ilamparthi A R, GM Laxman R R and GM Vishnu Prasanna scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third, fourth and fifth respectively. The total prize fund of the Rapid event was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 each respectively. The one-day Rapid Rating tournament witnessed the participation of 267 players including 3 GMs and 5 IMs. It was organized by Rooks and Knights Academy of Chess.

Munich GP Round 4: Humpy wins, Kosteniuk increases her lead

Koneru Humpy scored her first win of Monaco GP 2023 in the fourth round against Anna Muzychuk. The World no.3 sacrificed a pawn as part of her preparation. Anna took it correctly. However, later she had to spot a difficult tactic to keep things in balance. She didn't and the India no.1 ended up seizing her advantage. Alexandra Kosteniuk won an interesting battle against Tan Zhongyi. With this win, she moved to 4/4. GM Mariya Muzychuk also scored her first victory of the event, against WGM Zhu Jiner. Kishan Gangolli wins Silver, Naveen Kumar Bronze at 1st FIDE Olympiad for People with Disabilities 2023

India drew with Philippines in the final round to finish fourth at 1st FIDE Olympiad for People with Disabilities. Kishan Gangolli won an individual Silver medal on Board no.3 and also Best game of the tournament prize. Naveen Kumar A secured a Bronze medal on Board no.5 (Reserve) scoring 2.5/5. India drew with Philippines in the final round to finish fourth. This is a great result considering, India started as the tenth seed, lost only one game to the eventual Gold medalist, Poland who scored a perfect 12/12. The sole draw was against the Bronze medal winning team. India missed a medal due to the third tie-break criteria, the second tie-break, Game Points was also same with Philippines - 15.

Munich GP Round 3: Kosteniuk scores a hat-trick

Alexandra Kosteniuk registered her third consecutive victory at Munich GP 2023. She got a pleasant position out of the opening against WGM Dinara Wagner and had no trouble converting into a win. WGM Zhu Jiner scored the only other win of the round against GM Zhansaya Abdumalik. Zhansaya probably had difficulty of shaking cobwebs after missing out a great opportunity against Humpy in the previous round. GM Humpy and GM Harika drew their respective games against GM Mariya Muzychuk and IM Alina Kashlinskaya. German no.1, GM Elisabeth Paehtz missed a chance in the endgame against GM Tan Zhongyi. A whole new set of Challenges are added when you go to play an event in a foreign country! 14-year-old Kerala youngster Adithya A Chullikkad did exactly that, and he gained a total of 100 elo points in the Rilton Cup held at Stockholm, Sweden. 19-year-old Nurgyul Salimova finishes second at Bulgarian Championship 2023 in the Open section

It is rare to see female players take part in the Open section of their country's National championship.19-year-old IM Nurgyul Salimova decided to do that at Bulgarian Championship 2023. The teenager scored an impressive 6/9 and edged past two more players, GM Momchil Petkov and GM Martin Petrov, to finish second overall. She scored four wins, four draws and suffered her sole loss of the event against the top seed and eventual champion, GM Kiril Georgiev, to win a Silver. The teenager earned her first GM-norm last year when she defeated the legend, GM Nigel Short in the penultimate round. Munich GP Round 2: Tenacious Humpy shows incredible resilience

The true sign of a strong player is not just how easily they can win. It lies in the fact that how they deal with it after landing themselves in danger. Both GM Koneru Humpy and GM Anna Muzychuk found themselves in lost positions in the second round of Munich GP 2023. While Humpy blundered an exchange, Anna found herself positionally lost. The India no.1 and World no.3 fought tooth and nail to salvage a half point as she had two pawns for a rook in the endgame eventually, both sides had a minor piece each.
