Ethan Vaz gets the CCT Pragg Scholarship!

The CCT Pragg Scholarship of Rs.2,07,530 goes to 11-year-old Ethan Vaz. In this article, we share how this entire scholarship was conceptualized. Ethan also had a conversation between the man who made this scholarship possible - Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa! We also asked some questions to Ethan's father Edwin Vaz about what this scholarship means to them. Ethan is one of the biggest talents in Indian chess. Speaking with Pragg was an inspiring moment for the youngster. We want to take this moment to thank Pragg for his amazing play and our dear Janta (viewers) for their incessant support to the game of chess! Munich GP Round 9: Can Humpy stop Kosteniuk?

GM Koneru Humpy is the only one who has the opportunity to stop GM Alexandra Kosteniuk. Humpy won her second consecutive game as she positionally outplayed the Germany no.1, GM Elisabeth Paehtz. Since Kosteniuk drew her game with GM Nana Dzagindze, she is now at 7/9, a full point ahead of Humpy 6/9. Humpy and Kosteniuk are the only two players who are still undefeated so far. They will face each other in the penultimate round which will be a virtual final as the result of the game will have a huge implication towards the winner of Munich GP 2023. MPL National Teams 2023 R2-3: Kishan Kumar stuns Deepan Chakkravarthy

Kishan Kumar of Bihar A scored the biggest upset of the second round at MPL 42nd National Team Chess Championship Open 2023. He defeated the GM Deepan Chakkravarthy (RSPB B), who has a wealth of knowledge. Kumar Gaurav held the reigning Commonwealth champion, IM P Shyam Nikhil to a draw. On the top board, WGM Swati Ghate (LIC) held GM Vaibhav Suri (PSPB) to a draw. Although the latter was losing in the endgame. GM G N Gopal (PSPB) scored a crucial victory over GM Pranesh M, to ensure his team PSPB wins over Tamil Nadu B. Adamas University dominates East Zone Inter University Women Chess Championship 2022

Adamas University won East Zone Inter University Women Chess Championship 2023 with a perfect score 10/10. For the second consecutive year, they have won the tournament, scoring 100% and finishing two points ahead of the competition. Not only a perfect score but every single member of the team won all of their games, not a single individual draw was conceded. Second seeded University of Calcutta scored 8/10 to finish second. Their sole loss of the event was against the eventual champion. Jadavpur University edged past two more teams to finish third with a score of 7/10.

Magnus Carlsen wins Airthings Masters 2023

Magnus Carlsen set the tone of the Grand Final by winning the first game. After a draw in the second game, Hikaru Nakamura got a great opportunity to deliver the equalizer in the third game. Despite having the decisive advantage for the better part of the endgame, the World Fischer Random champion could not find a way to win the game. Carlsen was winning the fourth game too but he decided to draw the game as it was enough for him to win the Grand Final and clinch the Airthings Masters 2023. Munich GP Round 8: Humpy wins and moves to second place

GM Koneru Humpy defeated IM Alina Kashlinskaya to move to the sole second place. This was the Poland no.1's second consecutive loss at Munich GP 2023. Humpy seized her opportunity when her opponent did not provide correct resistance in the same color bishop endgame. GM Anna Muzychuk also erred in the rook and opposite color bishop endgame which seemed to have headed towards a draw. Thus, GM Alexandra Kosteniuk has once again increased her lead by 1.5 points to 6.5/8. Humpy is the only one at 5/8, followed by GM Elisabeth Paehtz and GM Nana Dzagnidze at 4.5/8 each. MPL National Teams 2023 R1: Srihari astonishes Adhiban

18-year-old Srihari L scored the biggest upset of the first round at MPL 42nd National Team Chess Championship Open 2023. The teenager earned his biggest win of his career against GM Adhiban. His teammate of Pondicherry, Umashankar A was also winning against GM G N Gopal. However, he settled for a draw by perpetual check. PSPB Men's team barely managed to avoid a draw and won their first round against Ponndicherry 2.5-1.5. AAI, RSPB B and RSPB A scored whitewash wins in the Open. GM Vishnu Prasanna is well-known in the entire world of chess for having trained D. Gukesh to become a top chess player at just the age of 16 years. But the GM from Chennai has many more students who have achieved many things in chess. In order that his training reaches more people, Vishnu and his better half WIM Raghavi have launched GMVCC (GM Vishnu's Chess Club), a physical setup in Anna Nagar Chennai. Sumer Arsh wins the Arjun Erigaisi Death Match 2.0 scholarship of Rs.3,25,000

When the ChessBase India Originals Death Match 1.0 ended GM Anish Giri donated Rs.2,00,000 (a part of his prize money) as a scholarship for a talented and upcoming player. This was won by Ilamparthi AR. Keeping up with the tradition, the winner of Death Match 2.0 Arjun Erigaisi also donated his prize money. Arjun went a step ahead and donated his entire prize money of Rs.3,25,000. The Arjun Erigaisi Death Match 2.0 scholarship was won by Sumer Arsh Shaikh, a talented 14-year-old boy from Telangana. Sumer is the one who defeated Arjun and Gukesh in their tandem simul exhibition at the DreamHack 2022. Vignesh N R dominates 24th NordWest Cup 2023

IM Vignesh N R scored an unbeaten 6/7 to win 24th NordWest Cup in Bad Zwischenahn, Germany. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Nine players finished 5.5/7. His brother, GM Visakh N R was among them and he was placed fifth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund combining three groups was €5000. The top three prizes in Group A (>1850) were €1200, 800 and 600 along with a trophy each respectively. Vignesh won ₹106208 approximately. Airthings Masters 2023: Nakamura takes the alternate route to the Grand Final

Arjun Erigaisi missed a draw against Wesley So in the first game of the Losers Semifinal. The teenager was lost in the second game too. However, So decided to draw the game as it was enough for him to advance to the Losers Final where Hikaru Nakamura was waiting for him. The reigning World Fischer Random champion missed a win in the first game. After a quick theoretical draw in the second, the match went into Armageddon which was won by Nakamura. Munich GP Round 7: Nana Dzagnidze reduces the gap

GM Nana Dzagnidze scored the sole win of Round 7 against IM Alina Kashlinskaya. The Georgian scored a fine victory in the King's Indian Defence where she outplayed her opponent. The remaining five games ended in draws. Thus, Dzagnidze moved to sole second position 4.5/7, one full point behind the tournament leader, GM Alexandra Kosteniuk 5.5/7. GM Koneru Humpy is in sole third position 4/7 after her draw with WGM Zhu Jiner. Five players including GM Harika Dronavalli are at shared fourth place with a 50% score 3.5/7. MPL 42nd National Team Open and 20th National Team Women Chess Championship 2023 preview

The strongest nationals after the National Premier championship – the national team championship boast the participation of several grandmasters, IMs, WGMs and WIMs. The venue is Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering & Technology, Pollachi whose founder Dr.N. Mahalingam was a former president of All India Chess Federation and Tamil Nadu State Chess Association for many years. The dates are from 10th to 16th February 2023. In the absence of the strong PSPB team in 2022, the Airports Authority of India won the title and the Railway Sports Promotion Board clinched the second and third places. 10-year-old Niladri Banerjee becomes the youngest ever West Bengal State Rapid Rating 2023 champion

The reigning West Bengal State Under-11 Open champion, Niladri Banerjee created a record on 29th January 2023. At the age of 10 years 5 months and 4 days, the little kid from Howrah District became the youngest West Bengal State Rapid Rating 2023 champion. He won the tournament with a perfect score 8/8 and finished a full point ahead of the competition. Defending champion Subhayan Kundu and Bishal Basak scored 7/8 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹58400 + trophies.
