2nd Maharashtra GM 2023 R7: Milosz and Vedant Panesar are the coleaders

IM Sammed Shete had a well contested draw against GM Luka Paichadze (GEO) in the seventh round of 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023. IM Milosz Szapar (POL) defeated GM Levon Babujian (ARM) to stay in the lead 6/7. FM Vedant Panesar continues his fantastic form as he won against the former Asian Junior Open champion, IM Raahul V S in a dominated fashion. Vedant and Milosz are the only two players at 6/7. They will face each other in the eighth round. IM S Rohith Krishna scored a comfortable victory over the top seed GM Boris Savchenko. Sanket Chakravarty missed a great opportunity to beat the in-form IM Viani Antonio Dcunha. Luka, Sammed and Rohith are trailing by a half point at 5.5/7 each. Pranav Venkatesh and Divya Deshmukh clinch Silver at Asian Continental Blitz 2023 Open and Women

FM Arystan Isanzhulov (KAZ), GM Pranav Venkatesh and GM Denis Makhnev (KAZ) scored 7.5/9 each at Asian Continental Blitz 2023 Open. They won Gold, Silver and Bronze medal each respectively. Pranav's sole loss of the event was against the eventual winner, Isanzhulov. All three podium finishers suffered a loss each. The defending Asian Continental Blitz Women champion, IM Divya Deshmukh scored 7/9 to secure Silver. She finished a half point behind the winner, WIM Xeniya Balabayeva (KAZ) 7.5/9. WGM Turmunk Munkhzul (MGL) scored 6.5/9 to clinch Bronze. Divya lost two games against Xeniya and WIM Nazerke Nurgali (KAZ). GM Sethuraman S P is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. Aravindh Chithambaram wins 23rd Dubai Open 2023 for the second consecutive year, Arjun Erigaisi third

Arjun Erigaisi drew his final round game against Aravindh Chithambaram. The 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalist, Javokhir Sindarov (UZB) also drew his game against M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI). Thus, the four leaders ended up finishing with the same score 6.5/9. Aravindh won 23rd Dubai Open 2023 on tie-breaks, Sindarov second and Arjun was placed third. This is the second consecutive year Aravindh has won the Dubai Open. He remained undefeated on both occasion. This performance of his brought him closer to 2650 Elo rating. India currently has nine players in the World top 100 in live ratings. 11th Norway Chess 2023 R5: Gukesh beats Abdusattorov

D Gukesh drew the Classical game against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) in Round 5 of 11th Norway Chess 2023. He was completely winning the Armageddon against the former World Rapid champion. However, Gukesh decided to repeat moves as draw with Black in Armageddon results in winning it and the match. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE) and Hikaru Nakamura (USA) scored the only two Classical wins of the round against the tournament leader Fabiano Caruana (USA) and birthday boy - Aryan Tari (NOR). The 'Speed King' Nakamura is now World no.2 again. Magnus Carlsen defeated Anish Giri in Armageddon to win the match. Round 6 starts today from 5 p.m. local time, 8:30 p.m. IST. 2nd Maharashtra GM 2023 R5-6: Vedant Panesar squashes Boris Savchenko in 20 moves!

FM Vedant Panesar crushed the top seed of the tournament, GM Boris Savchenko in just 20 moves in Round 5. The former National under-17 champion, used his preparation to score a victory in less than three hours, fastest among the top boards of the round. IM Raahul V S and IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete won their respective fifth round games and drew their six encounter against each other. GM Levon Babujian (ARM) and IM Milos Saposz (POL) joined them in the lead 5/6. Seven players are trailing them by a half point 4.5/6 including the sole untitled player, Sanket Chakravarty. Aravindh or Arjun - Who will win 23rd Dubai Open 2023?

Arjun Erigaisi defeated the China no.2 and World no.19 Yangyi Yu in the penultimate round of 23rd Dubai Open 2023. The India no.5 did what the position required him to do in the endgame and managed to outsmart his opponent to join the leaders. Aravindh Chithambaram missed his fourth consecutive opportunity to win and ended up splitting the point with Abhijeet Gupta. He is still in the championship race. Arjun and Aravindh will face each other in the final round. 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalist, Javokhir Sindarov (UZB) and Maxim Matlakov are the remaining two leaders at 6/8 each. 11th Norway Chess 2023 R4: Gukesh draws the Classical against Carlsen

D Gukesh drew his second Classical rated game ever against Magnus Carlsen. Earlier this year, he drew against the world no.1 at 85th Tata Steel Masters 2023. In the Classical battle, Gukesh navigated the queen endgame quite well. It lasted more than 50% of the entire game. The Armageddon was a chaotic encounter which saw Gukesh sacrificing his queen in a must-win game and eventually losing the game after blundering a piece. The result might have gone in the Norwegian's favor. However, Gukesh showed once again, that he is ready to take Carlsen in any format of the game. Fabiano Caruana scored the sole Classical victory of the round against Alireza Firouzja. Round 5 starts today from 5 p.m. local time, 8:30 p.m. IST. 2nd Maharashtra GM 2023 R4: Raahul makes an incredible save against Luka

IM Raahul V S showed gritty defense against GM Luka Paichadze (GEO) in Round 4 of 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023. Despite being down by two pawns, the former Asian Junior champion, stormed his king down the board before using his rooks to unsettle his opponent. FM Vedant Panesar, FM Sharan Rao and IM Kushagra Mohan joined the previous round leaders Raahul, IM Sammed Shete, Luka and FM Harshad S at 3.5/4 each. Vidit Gujrathi and Raunak Sadhwani scored emphatic victories against Peter Svidler and Nigel Short to take 2-1 lead. Vidit made a short work of Svidler in just 23 moves. Aravindh Chithambaram drew against Maxim Matlakov in the seventh round of 23rd Dubai Open 2023. For the third consecutive round, Aravindh managed to get himself a fantastic position. However, he was unable to convert it as his attack fizzled out. Yangyi Yu (CHN) defeated Shant Sargsyan (ARM) to join Aravindh in the lead 5.5/7. They are followed by eight players at 5/8 each. Arjun Erigaisi and Abhijeet Gupta are the only two Indians among them. Arjun drew against M Amin Tabatabaei and Abhijeet defeated Vugar Asadli (AZE). Prraneeth Vuppala becomes India's 82nd Grandmaster, Telangana CM announces ₹2.5 crore to become a Super GM

IM Prraneeth Vuppala became India's 82nd Grandmaster on Thursday 11th May 2023. He defeated GM Hans Niemann (USA) in the penultimate round of Baku Open 2023 to cross 2500 in the live ratings and become a Grandmaster. The 15-year-old scored his first GM-norm at First Saturday GM March 2022 in Budapest, Hungary. Then he delivered a fantastic performance to secure his second GM-norm at 55th Biel Master Tournament 2022 in Biel, Switzerland. The final GM-norm was scored at 2nd Chessable Sunway Formentera Open 2023 in Spain. The third norm and 2500 live ratings happened in consecutive events within the span of 25 days. IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete, GM Luka Paichadze (GEO), IM Raahul V S and FM Harshad S are the four leaders 3/3 each at 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023. Sammed scored a nice victory against GM Levon Babujian (ARM). Former Asian Junior champion, IM Raahul V S defeated GM Venkatesh M R. FM Harshad S got the better of GM Azer Mirzoev (AZE). 16 players are trailing them by a half point at 2.5/3 each. Nigel Short and Peter Svidler bounced back by scoring emphatic victories over Raunak Sadhwani and Vidit Gujrathi. 23rd Dubai Open 2023 R5-6: Aravindh Chitambaram still in sole lead

Aravindh Chithambaram drew his fifth and sixth round games to maintain his sole lead 5/6. He had great winning chances against both GM Yangyi Yu (CHN) and GM M Amin Tabatabei (IRI) in fifth and sixth rounds respectively. However, he missed seizing his chances and the game ended in a draw. Six players including GM Arjun Erigaisi, are trailing by a half point at 4.5/6; B Adhiban, Abhijeet Gupta and Karthikeyan Murali are at 4/6 each. After two consecutive draws, Arjun defeated GM Nikolas Theodorou (GRE) by delivering a checkmate. IM Anuj Shrivatri defeated two GMs in consecutive rounds to move to 3.5/6. 11th Norway Chess 2023 R3: Gukesh bests Mamedyarov in Armageddon

D Gukesh drew his Classical game against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in Round 3 of 11th Norway Chess 2023. In Armageddon, Gukesh could have finished things much earlier in a very sharp game. However, things were prolonged. The teenager defended correctly and attacked brilliantly to went on to win the game. Hikaru Nakamura and Magnus Carlsen blitzed out their moves to draw the Classical game. Carlsen won Armageddon. Alireza Firouzja and Fabiano Caruana maintained their unbeaten record intact against Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Aryan Tari in Classical games as they both won. Today is the first rest day. 2nd Maharashtra GM 2023 R1: Arya and Goutham score big upsets

Arya Bhakta and Goutham Krishna H scored big upsets in the first round of 2nd Maharashtra GM 2023. Arya Bhakta used his theoretical knowledge in the Ruy Lopez to gain upper hand. Later he capitalized on his opponent GM Akash G's blunder in time trouble. Goutham Krishna H gained positional advantage in the middlegame against GM Alexei Fedorov. When he was low on time, he blundered in time trouble. Thankfully, his veteran opponent did not notice and he got away with it. Vidit Gujrathi and Raunak Sadhwani are off to a great start as they defeated Peter Svidler and Nigel Short respectively in the first Classical game.
