Nakamura wins 11th Norway Chess 2023 in a photo finish, Gukesh third

Hikaru Nakamura spoiled Fabiano Caruana's fantastic run at 11th Norway Chess 2023 by winning against him in the final round. Despite leading the tournament for the better part of it, Caruana gave away a pawn in the middlegame, for which he never got any compensation. The Speed King is someone who does not let these opportunities slip by. He converted his advantage very neatly without giving any fragment of opportunity for his opponent to bounce back. Thus the former World Championship Challenger had to be content with a second place finish. For the first time since 2019, Norway Chess had a new winner. D Gukesh drew both Classical and Armageddon against Wesley So. He won the Armageddon as per the rules of the match and went on to finish third. Asian Continental 2023 R7: Divya Deshmukh takes a full-point lead

In the all-Indian battle at the top board, India's latest Female IM came out on top. IM Divya Deshmukh won against WGM Mary Ann Gomes, where the latter blundered in a complex Rook ending. With this win, Divya is leading the women's section with 6/7 points. In the Open section, GM Arjun Erigaisi had a draw against the tournament leader GM Shamsiddin Vokidov (UZB). Aronyak Ghosh is just half a point behind Shamsiddin, as he defeated one of the World's top juniors GM Pranav V with the White pieces in a chaotic battle. IM Aronyak Ghosh is the only Indian player with 5.5/6, while GMs Abhimanyu Puranik. Arjun Erigaisi and Prraneeth Vuppala trail behind with 5/6. The Alekhine (1.e4 Nf6) is a rare guest in general and especially at a high-level. During the pandemic, however, this daring opening has been employed on several occasions, notably by the World Champion Magnus Carlsen. A faster time-control and perhaps the unusual atmosphere created by online games probably helped some players unleash, from time to time, a marginal opening to surprise their opponents. Playing the Alekhine on a regular basis is quite demanding, not to say a bit foolish. Not that this provocative opening is bad, but some paths have been established where White can more easily claim a slight advantage out of the opening than against a more classical opening. WGM Mary Ann Gomes showed her class as she defeated the top seed IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (MGL) in Round 6 of Asian Continental Women 2023. There is a reason she has won lots of accolades and laurels over the years. IM Divya Deshmukh won against WIM Alua Nurmanova (KAZ) with ease. Both Mary and Divya are the coleaders in the Women's event with a 5/6 score. They will face each other in the seventh round. In the Open section, GM Arjun Erigaisi could not find a way to break his opponent IM Madaminov Mukhiddin's (UZB) resistance. The All-Indian battle between GM Pranav V and GM Abhimanyu Puranik ended in a draw. Arjun, Abhimanyu, Pranav, IM Aronyak Ghosh along with eight other players are trailing the leader, GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) by a full point at 4.5/6 each. D Gukesh is having the tournament of his life at 11th Norway Chess 2023. He defeated Aryan Tari in a beautiful game where his c and d-pawns reached the seventh rank in the middlegame. Yes, you have to see it to believe it. The teenager scored the only Classical victory of the round. This win not only propelled him to the third place in the tournament standings, but also moved him up to World no.13 in the live ratings. That day is not very far when Gukesh will break into World top 10 and surpass Vishy Anand to become the new India no.1 too. Magnus Carlsen defeated Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in Armageddon. S Rohith Krishna on the verge of winning 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023

IM S Rohith Krishna registered his fourth win in-a-row in the penultimate round of 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023. What seemed like an opening trap from the outside, was actually unfolding in front of everyone's eyes, just like the players. Rohith defeated IM Milosz Szpar to increase his lead to a full point heading into the final round. He is now at 8.5/10. IM Viani Antonio Dcunha, GM Aleksej Aleksandrov and GM Laxman R R are the only three players at 7.5/10 each. Rohith needs a draw against Aleksej in the final round to become a clear champion. Vidit Gujrathi and Raunak Sadhwani win the Maharashtra Challenge Match 2023

Vidit Gujrathi and Raunak Sadhwani won Maharashtra Challenge Match 2023. They both dominated their respective opponents Peter Svidler and Nigel Short. Raunak won the match with six games and a day to spare, Vidit clinched it with four games left on the final day. The India no.3 won ₹1000000, while Svidler received ₹600000. The teenager Raunak received ₹300000, while the veteran Short got ₹200000. Raunak dominated all three formats - Classical, Rapid and Blitz. Vidit scored more in Classical and Rapid events. Svidler was better in Blitz. This was a FIDE-Rated event, so both Vidit and Raunak won some valuable Elo rating points, apart from gaining a wealth of experience in their home state of Maharashtra. GM Abhimanyu Puranik drew against GM Bardiya Daneshvar (IRI) in the fifth round of Asian Continental 2023. GM Rinat Jumabayev (KAZ) and GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) won their respective games to stay in the lead 4.5/5. They are followed by six players including three Indians - GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM Pranav V and GM Abhimanyu Puranik. In the Women's event, IM Divya Deshmukh held the top seed IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (MGL) to a draw. WGM Mary Ann Gomes defeated WFM Afruza Khamdamova (UZB) to join the four-way lead with Divya at 4/5 each. 2nd Maharashtra GM 2023 R9: S Rohith Krishna emerges sole leader

IM S Rohith Krishna defeated FM Vedant Panesar to emerge sole leader at 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023. 13-year-old, reigning two-time National Under-17 Open champion, CM Mayank Chakraborty outplayed GM Alexei Fedorov. The veteran made some positional inaccuracy which the teenager correctly capitalized on. This win earned him his maiden GM and IM-norm. IM Kushagra Mohan and untitled Sanket Chakravarty held the top seed GM Boris Savchenko and the third seed GM Luka Paichadze to a draw each. FM Ayush Sharma defeated IM Sammed Shete after the latter made an incorrect exchange which increased the vulnerability of his king. Harikrishnan clinches May Day Celebration Rapid Rating Open 2023

Both IM Harikrishnan A Ra and IM Srihari L R scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 each. Harikrishnan won May Day Celebration Rapid Rating Open 2023 due to better tie-breaks. Srihari was adjudged third. Seven players scored 7/9 each. IM Rathanvel V S edged past six other players to secure third place. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each respectively. The one-day rapid rating tournament organized by Azure Chess Institute and chessfee.com witnessed the participation of 368 players including a GM and 7 IMs. This was Harikrishnan's third rating tournament triumph of 2023.

Asian Continental 2023 R1-4: Abhimanyu Puranik and Divya Deshmukh in the lead

GM Abhimanyu Puranik defeated IM Madaminov Mukhiddin (KAZ) to join the lead with five more players at Asian Continental 2023. Abhimanyu won an exciting game against IM Arystabek Urazayev (KAZ) in the third round. GM Arjun Erigaisi has managed to win three games in-a-row after missing the first round as he was travelling from Dubai, UAE. GM Pranav V, GM Sethuraman S P and IM Aditya Samant are also at 3/4 each. 11th Norway Chess 2023 R7: Caruana loses on time in Armageddon against Gukesh

D Gukesh continues his great run at 11th Norway Chess 2023. The 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalist, drew the Classical game against the tournament sole leader, Fabiano Caruana. In the Armageddon, the teenager was lost in the queen endgame. However, the American ran out of time and lost the game. Thus, Gukesh won the match. Caruana is still in sole lead 14.5/21 followed by Hikaru Nakamura 12.5/21. Nakamura defeated Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in a thrilling Armageddon in a back and forth game. Magnus Carlsen continues to struggle winning a Classical game at this event. 2nd Maharashtra GM 2023 R8: S Rohith Krishna joins Vedant Panesar and Milosz Szpar in the lead

IM S Rohith Krishna continues his terrific form. A day after beating the top seed of the tournament, Rohith won against the third seeded, GM Luka Paichadze (GEO). His preparation worked out as the Georgian made some positional inaccuracies and later lost an exchange. FM Vedant Panesar drew his game against IM Milosz Szapar (POL). Thus, Milos, Rohith and Vedant are now in a three-way lead 6.5/8. IM Neelash Saha, CM Mayank Chakraborty and GM Alexei Fedorov are close on their heels at 6/8 each. They defeated FM Ritviz Parab, GM Vladimir Burmakin and IM Sammed Shete respectively. The top three boards will witness - Rohith vs Vedant, Milosz vs Neelash and Mayank vs Fedorov in Round 9. Diptayan Ghosh and Sammed Shete win 1st RCPP Rapid and Blitz Rating Open 2023

GM Diptayan Ghosh and IM Sammed Jaykumar are the winners of 1st RCPP Rapid and Blitz Rating Open 2023. Four players - Diptayan, GM Deepan Chakkravarthy, IM Ratnakaran K and GM Deep Sengupta scored 8/9 in Rapid. Except Ratnakaran, the remaining three remained undefeated. In the Blitz event, They were placed first to fourth according to tie-breaks. In Blitz also four players finished with 8/9 each. They are - Sammed, Diptayan, Deepan and IM Krishnater Kushager. They secured the first four places respectively. Only the top two remained undefeated. Diptayan and Deepan secured podium finishes in both events. Total prize fund of the events was ₹300000, ₹200000 for Rapid and ₹100000 for Blitz. Top three prizes in Rapid were ₹50000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each. 11th Norway Chess 2023 R6: Gukesh wins Armageddon against Giri

D Gukesh drew the Classical game against Anish Giri (NED) in Round 6 of 11th Norway Chess 2023. It was a well contested draw. Gukesh prevailed in the Armageddon against Giri. He moved to 8.5/18. Fabiano Caruana scored the sole Classical victory of the round against Nodirbek Abdusattorov. This is also his first win in a rated game against the former World Rapid champion. Caruana once again increased his lead by 1.5 points as he is now at 13.5/18 and also became World no.2 in the live ratings. Magnus Carlsen avenged his last edition's Armageddon loss against Aryan Tari. Round 7 starts today from 5 p.m. local time, 8:30 p.m. IST.
