Tata Steel 2024 R10: Gukesh and Abdusattorov are the coleaders

D Gukesh decimated Alexander Donchenko (GER) in Round 10 of 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024 to maintain his lead. The Germany no.3 consumed a lot of time in the opening when Gukesh went 12...Nb6. Later, Gukesh found a nice tactic to gain material and converted his advantage without any difficulty. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) also scored a win over Max Warmerdam (NED). Both him and Gukesh are now the coleaders 6.5/10, followed by Anish Giri (NED) and R Praggnanandhaa at 6/10 each. Praggnanandhaa drew against Vidit Gujrathi. Ian Nepomniachtchi scored the only other win in the Mastes against the world champion, Ding Liren (CHN). Leon Luke Mendonca drew against Hans Niemann (USA) after 112 moves. This is his second consecutive 110+ move game. Today is the last rest day. Praggnanandhaa, Humpy and Vaishali set to battle Carlsen, Wenjun and co. at 12th Norway Chess 2024

The 12th edition of Norway Chess will introduce an equal Women's tournament. The inaugural edition of the Women's event will be played in the same playing hall concurrently, identical number of players, same format and an equivalent prize fund. The Open section will feature - Magnus Carlsen (NOR), Fabiano Caruana (USA), reigning Norway Chess winner - Hikaru Nakamura (USA), World Champion - Ding Liren (CHN), Alireza Firouzja (FRA) and R Praggnanandhaa. Koneru Humpy, Tingjie Lei (CHN), reigning four-time Women's World Champion - Wenjun Ju (CHN), Anna Muzychuk (UKR), R Vaishali and Pia Cramling (SWE) will be seen in action in the Women's event. 1st Bangalore GM 2024 R7: Sethuraman and Short make it a four-way with Abhijeet and Mitrabha

Top seed GM Abhijeet Gupta made a quick draw against GM Mitrabha Guha in the seventh round of 1st Bangalore GM 2024. It allowed GM Sethuraman S P and GM Nigel Short to catch up with them. Iniyan loosened his grip on the position against Sethuraman which allowed his opponent to get back in the game. The English legend defeated IM Ilamparthi A R with ease. The four leaders 6/7 will face each other in the eighth round - Sethuraman vs Abhijeet and Mitrabha vs Short. Untitled Nithin Babu continues his great momentum. Tata Steel 2024 R9: Praggnanandhaa beats Wenjun Ju, joins the lead with Abdusattorov, Giri and Gukesh

R Praggnanandhaa defeated the reigning four-time women's world champion, Wenjun Ju (CHN) in Round 9 of 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024. This means Praggnanandhaa has defeated both reigning world champions in open and women, just a week apart in the very same tournament. This win also ensured he joined the lead with Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB), Anish Giri (NED) and D Gukesh. Abdusattorov scored the quickest victory of the round against Jorden van Foreest (NED). Gukesh drew against Vidit Gujrathi. Leon Luke Mendonca won a grueling battle against Jaime Santos Latasa (ESP) after 111 moves. Selvamurugan wins 1st Bangalore GM Category B Below 2000 Rating Tournament 2024

Selvamurugan B and 11-year-old Madhesh Kumar S scored 9/10 at 1st Bangalore GM Category B Below 2000 Rating Tournament 2024. Selvamurugan won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Madhesh was placed second. The champion remained unbeaten and defeated both runners-up. Teenagers, Jaidambareesh N R and Vihaan Dawda scored 8.5/10 each. They were placed third and fourth respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1250000. The top three prizes were ₹125000, ₹100000 and ₹80000 along with a trophy each respectively. This was Selvamurugan's second tournament of the year and he won it. Aradhya Garg becomes the latest International Master from New Delhi

23-year-old Aradhya Garg became India's latest International Master on 3rd January 2024. He defeated GM Tiger Hillarp Persson (SWE) in the seventh round of Rilton Cup 2023/24 to touch 2400 in the live ratings. The talented youth from New Delhi earned his first IM-norm at World Youth Under-18 back in November 2015. Then he secured his second IM-norm at 15th Delhi Open 2017. Five years later, he earned his final GM-norm in March 2022 at 1st Guwahati GM Open. However, the 2400 kept alluring him despite getting very close to it. The final hurdle was crossed at the beginning of this year. Before that, he managed to score three more IM-norms. He scored all his norms in Open tournaments. Adamas University perfect at East Zone Inter University Men and Women 2023-24

Adamas University won both Women and Men section of East Zone Inter University Championship 2022-23. Both Women and Men's team scored a perfect 12/12. Jadavpur University scored 10/12 to secure second place. Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University and Banaras Hindu University scored 8/12 each to be placed third and fourth according to tie-breaks. In Men's event, four teams - University of Calcutta, Jadavpur University, Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University and Patna University scored 9/12 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively. Ayush Sharma dominates UICC Indore Rapid Rating Open 2024

IM Ayush Sharma scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win UICC Rapid Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Reigning Commonwealth Gold medalist, IM P Shyam Nikhil scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. Five players - Mrittika Mallick, Pushkar Dere, IM D V Prasad, IM Anup Deshmukh and Anupam Nema scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third to seventh according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹25000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each. 1st Bangalore GM 2024 R5-6: Mitrabha Guha's magnificent king walk

Top seed GM Abhijeet Gupta defeated IM Neelash Saha to maintain his lead after the sixth round of 1st Bangalore GM 2024. The reigning Hastings Masters winner capitalized on his opportunity when his opponent blundered in a sharp position. GM Mitrabha Guha maneuvered his king beautifully in a rook and opposite color bishop endgame against GM Pranav Anand to stay in the lead. He brought his king all the way from g1 to h8, then g7 to execute his plan and grab the crucial pawn. The coleaders Abhijeet and Mitrabha will inevitably clash in the seventh round. Previous day leaders - Neelash and Pranav drew their fifth round game. Today is a rest day for the Classical event. Round 7 starts tomorrow Tuesday 23rd January at 3 p.m. IST. Alireza Firouzja (FRA) scored a fantastic win against Ding Liren (CHN) in Round 8 of 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024. The world no.6 sacrificed an exchange after which the world champion blundered. His opponent proclaimed that it is a dangerous line for Black and he had to know a lot to defend. Ian Nepomniachtchi scored the only other win in the Masters against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB). R Praggnanandhaa, D Gukesh and Vidit Gujrathi drew against Max Warmerdam (NED), Wenjun Ju (CHN) and Alexander Donchenko (GER) respectively. Gukesh, Anish Giri (NED) and Alireza Firouzja (FRA) are currently the three leaders at 5/8 each. Leon Luke Mendonca swindled Anton Korobov (UKR) to move to 5/8. Neelash Saha dominates 2nd Matrix Cup Rating Open 2024

IM Neelash Saha scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 2nd Matrix Cup Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Kartavya Anadkat, Om Batra and Suraj Dahiya scored 8/9 each. They secured second, third and fourth place respectively according to tie-breaks. Neelash drew against the eventual runner-up Kartavya and defeated the second runner-up Om Batra. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹800000. The top three prizes were ₹101000, ₹75000 and ₹50000 along with a trophy each respectively. This is the first tournament Neelash played in 2024 and he won it. Currently, he is sharing the lead with GM Pranav Anand at 1st Bangalore GM 2024. IM Neelash Saha made a short work of GM Nigel Short (ENG) in the fourth round of 1st Bangalore GM 2024. His strategy of avoiding a lot of theory worked against the legend of the sport. Local boy, GM Pranav Anand defeated IM Sammed Shete by sacrificing a piece, to join the lead with Neelash. IM Nitish Belurkar held GM Alexei Fedorov to a draw. GM Laxman R R suffered a tough loss against GM Abhijeet Gupta. He missed a precise continuation in a same color bishop endgame which ideally should have been a draw. GM Neelotpal Das had a 134-move long grueling draw against his childhood friend, GM Sandipan Chanda. Pushkar Dere maintains his good form. He defeated IM Semetei Tologon Tegin (KGZ) to move to 3.5/4. Vidit Gujrathi scored his first win at 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024 against Alireza Firouzja (FRA). After six draws, Vidit seized his opportunity by doing a king walk, something he has done twice before at Wijk aan Zee. D Gukesh scored his third consecutive win. He completed his hat-trick by winning against Max Warmerdam (NED). Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) defeated Anish Giri (NED) to join him and Gukesh in a three-way lead 4.5/7. R Praggnanandhaa drew against Jorden van Foreest (NED). Vidit and Praggnananadhaa are at 4/7 each. IM Divya Deshmukh registered a victory against GM Liam Vrolijk (NED). Leon Luke Mendonca bounced back by scoring a full point against IM Stefan Beukema (BEL). Dr. IM Anwesh Upadhyaya, FM Franciszek Sernecki (POL) and Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi scored 9/11 each. They secured second, third and fourth place according to tie-breaks. 1st Bangalore GM 2024 R2-3: Nigel Short and six more perfect at 3/3

The legend GM Nigel Short (ENG) is known not to prefer playing double rounds in a Classical tournament. It will be difficult to recall when was the last time he did that. However, on the second day of 1st Bangalore GM 2024, he played and won both games in Round 2 and 3. IM Viani Antonio Dcunha, IM Neelash Saha, GM Alexei Fedorov, GM Pranav Anand, IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete and IM Nitish Belurkar are the remaining five players at 3/3. Bangalore's very own, Pranav won an exciting battle against GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE) in the third round.
