Himal Gusain convincingly clinches 3rd Tours Open 2024

IM Himal Gusain scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 3rd Tours International Open A 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. GM Namig Guliyev (AZE) scored 7/9 to secure sole second place. Four players - GM Sergey A Fedorchuk (UKR), IM Guillaume Lamard (FRA), GM Alexandre Dgebuadze (BEL) and Julian Victor (BEL) scored 6.5/9 each. They were placed third to sixth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was €8000, €6500 for Open A. The top three prizes were €1200, €1000 and €800 along with a trophy each. Wei Yi wins 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024 on tie-breaks with a 2820 performance, Gukesh second

D Gukesh defeated Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) in Round 13 to advance to the Playoffs. Anish Giri (NED), Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) and Wei Yi (CHN) were the remaining three players to also score 8.5/13. Gukesh faced Giri in the Semifinals and Abdusattorov was up against Wei. Despite losing the first Blitz game, Gukesh bounced back by winning the must-win second game. Then he went on to win the sudden death to advance to the finals. Wei drew the first Blitz game against Abdusattorov and won the next. Against Gukesh also, he had same result. Wei Yi became champion of 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024. Gukesh, Giri and Abdusattorov shared second place. Vidit and Praggnanandhaa shared fifth place with Alireza Firouzja (FRA) 7.5/13 each. Leon Luke Mendonca roars at Tata Steel Challengers 2024 with a 2742 performance

GM Leon Luke Mendonca defeated IM Divya Deshmukh to win Tata Steel Challengers 2024. This triumph earned him a spot at 87th Tata Steel Masters which will take place from 17th January to 2nd February 2025. The win was not easy. Divya had a decisive advantage. However, at a crucial she decided to capture an incorrect bishop which turned the tables in Leon's favor. The teenager had a quiet start as he scored only 3/6 in the first half of the event. However, in the second half, he registered a staggering 6.5/7 which made the huge difference. He mentioned outplaying stronger opponents in complicated position in almost all of them was the key reason for his fantastic finish. Last year he won Baku Open 2023 with a 2732 performance and this time at Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands, he became champion by performing at 2742. The boy has certainly made a magnificent start in 2024. Abdallah M Nisthar wins 1st Bangalore GM Category C Below 1800 Rating Tournament 2024

Abdallah M Nisthar, Avhad Prajwal and Devarsh M Borkhetriya scored 9/10 each at 1st Bangalore GM Category C Below 1800 Rating Tournament 2024. Abdallah won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Avhad and Devarsh were placed second and third respectively. Both champion and second runner-up remain undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1250000. The top three prizes were ₹125000, ₹100000 and ₹85000 along with a trophy each respectively. Mitrabha Guha wins a double at 1st Bangalore GM 2024 with a 2672 performance, Sethuraman second

GM Mitrabha Guha defeated GM Shyam Sundar M to win 1st Bangalore GM 2024. Three days after winning the 1st Bangalore GM Blitz Open 2024, Mitrabha won his third over-the-board tournament he played in 2024. It is also his first major tournament triumph of his career. The previous day leader, GM Sethuraman S P also ended up with the same score 8/10 after sharing the point against GM Diptayan Ghosh. However, he had to be content with second place due to tie-breaks. Eight players scored 7.5/10. English legend, GM Nigel Short was placed third. The remaining places in the top ten were claimed by Indians. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹2500000. Tata Steel 2024 R12: Vidit wins a six-hour marathon, crosses 2750, becomes the new India #1 and World #10

Vidit Gujrathi scored marathon win against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) to join the five-way lead at 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024. After six hours and 77 moves later, Vidit defeated the sole leader to cross 2750, become India no.1 and World no.10 in the live ratings. All of them happened for the first time in his career. D Gukesh erred in a winning position against R Praggnanandhaa. He thought he was repeating the move for the second time to complete the first time control. However, his attentive opponent was sure that it was a threefold draw. He made a correct claim and escaped with a half point as that was his last hope left. Vidit, Anish Giri (NED), Gukesh, Abdusattorov and Wei Yi (CHN) are the five leaders at 7.5/12 each. In the Challengers, Leon Luke Mendonca won against Salem Saleh (UAE) in an exciting battle to join the lead 8.5/12 with Marc' Andria Maurizzi (FRA) who lost his game. GM Mitrabha Guha scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 1st Bangalore GM Blitz Rating Open 2024. Mitrabha finished a half point ahead of the competition. Four players - GM Sethuraman S P, GM Stany G A, IM Arash Tahbaz (IRI) and GM Diptayan Ghosh scored 8/9 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. Mitrabha defeated the eventual runner-up Sethuraman and drew against the second runner-up Stany. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹400000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹40000 and ₹30000 along with a trophy each respectively. This was Mitrabha's second tournament of the year. Three days later, he won the Classical GM tournament. IM Sharan Rao scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 6th Kudremukh Trophy Rapid Rating Open 2024. 11-year-old FM Aaron Reeve Mendes (CAN), Mandar Pradip Lad and Augustin A scored 8/9 each. They were placed second, third and fourth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each. Vidit Gujrathi played a fantastic game to beat Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) in Round 11 of 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024. He mentioned in the post-game interview that it was one of the best moves he ever found. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) defeated the four-time reigning women's world champion - Wenjun Ju (CHN) to emerge sole leader 7.5/11. D Gukesh played an exciting game against Alireza Firouzja (FRA). It ended in draw which means he is trailing the leader by a half point 7/11. Four players - Anish Giri (NED), Vidit, R Praggnanandhaa and Wei Yi (CHN) are at 6.5/11 each. Solving News: Andrey Selivanov tops the International Solving Contest in Fujairah with a perfect score!

In what was a striking case of experience trumping youth, 56-year-old Andrey Selivanov of Russia topped the leaderboard of the 20th International Solving Contest (ISC) here in Fujairah, besting his young compatriots, including the reigning World Champion in solving, Danila Pavlov, and the 17-year-old wunderkind and star in the making, Ural Khasanov. Andrey, who holds Grandmaster titles both in solving and composing, scored a perfect 60 out of 60 to dominate the rest of the field, while Danila and Ural finished second and third, respectively. Arnav Kherdekar and Kalpesh Dewang scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Nameet scored eight wins and suffered one loss. GM Sethuraman S P drew against GM Nigel Short (ENG) to maintain his sole lead 7.5/9 at 1st Bangalore GM 2024. Top seed GM Abhijeet Gupta suffered his second consecutive loss of the event against IM Srihari L R. IM Aronyak Ghosh had his chances versus GM Mitrabha Guha. However, the game ended up in a draw. Five players - Short, Mitrabha, Diptayan, Srihari L R and GM Shyam Sundar M are trailing the leader by a half point at 7/9 each. Pushkar Dere drew against GM Sandipan Chanda to move to 6.5/9. Krishnan Sasikiran wins 47th Zurich Christmas Masters 2023, Iniyan second

Krishnan Sasikiran, Eltaj Safarli (AZE) and Iniyan Pa scored 5.5/7 at 47th Zurich Christmas Masters 2023. Sasikiran won the tournament on tie-breaks. Safarli and Iniyan shared second place as all of their tie-breaks were exactly the same. All three of them remained undefeated. Sasikiran drew against both runners-up. The total prize fund of the tournament was CHF 18500. The top three prizes were CHF 3000, 2000 and 1400. This was Sasikiran's sole tournament triumph in 2023. GM Sethuraman S P defeated the top seed GM Abhijeet Gupta to gain sole lead 7/8 at 1st Bangalore GM 2024. The reigning National champion, Sethuraman capitalized on his opponent's paltry mistake. The remaining two leaders - GM Mitrabha Guha drew his game against GM Nigel Short (ENG). GM Neelotpal Das missed a beautiful opportunity in the endgame against GM Shyam Sundar M. Untitled Nithin Babu continues his great form. He drew against IM Srihari L R. Pushkar Dere won against IM Nitish Belurkar to move to 6/8.
