Boris Spassky is considered by many to be the most talented of all world champions. The great chess talent of the nine-year-old Spassky was discovered at the local Pioneer Palace (St. Petersburg) and encouraged by coaches such as Vladimir Zak. In 1953, the World Chess Federation named the 16-year-old an International Master, and in 1955 a Grand Master, after Spassky had achieved 2nd to 6th place in the USSR Championship and won the World Youth Championship U20. Sharan Rao dominates 22nd Sri Narayana Guru Trophy Rapid Rating Open 2024

IM Sharan Rao scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 22nd Sri Narayana Guru Trophy Rapid Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. CM Aakash G, Lakshith B Salian and Sa Kannan scored 8/9 each. They secured second, third and fourth place according to tie-breaks. Aakash won 23rd SNG Trophy Blitz Open scoring 8.5/9. Nithin Babu scored 8/9 to secure second place. Sharan finished third on tie-breaks scoring 7.5/9. The total prize fund of the Rapid Rating tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. For Blitz the prize fund was ₹40000. The top three prizes were ₹5000, ₹4000 and ₹3000. This was Sharan's fourth tournament triumph of the month and sixth of the year. The tournaments were organized by Sri Narayana Guru School of Chess Udupi and Kapu at Sri Hale Mariyamma Sabha Bhavana Kapu in Udupi, Karnataka on 29th and 30th June 2024.

Ten West Bengal players receive the Surya Ganguly Dabaru Scholarship

Ten players of West Bengal have received the Surya Ganguly Dabaru scholarship. The total scholarship amount was ₹500000 which means each player received ₹50000. Dabaru movie is inspired by the life of GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly. The Grandmaster was hands-on with this project. He meticulously selected the scholarship recipients. The players have secured a podium finish either in district, state or national tournaments. One of the ten recipients, is an 11-year-old hearing impaired (deaf) chess player. The idea behind instituting this scholarship is to make a difference in the life of the chess player from the state which GM Surya belongs - West Bengal. Tong Xiao wins Biel Festival Fischer Random Swiss Rapid 2024, Sasikiran third

Tong Xiao (CHN) scored an unbeaten 6.5/7 to win Biel Chess Festival Swiss Rapid Fischer Random Championship 2024. GM Rinat Jumabayev (KAZ) scored sole 6/7 to finish second. His only loss was against the eventual champion, Tong in the fifth round. Three players - GM Krishnan Sasikiran, IM Gabriel Gaehwiler (SUI) and FM Ritvik Krishnan scored 5.5/7 each. They were placed third to fifth according to tie-breaks. Total prize fund was CHF 500. The top three prizes were CHF 250, 150 and 100 along with a medal each. Fabulous Fabiano Caruana dominates SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2024

Fabiano Caruana (USA) won SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2024 with five rounds to spare. He has been consistently delivering top class performance for more than a year. Going into the final day of Blitz, he was 4.5 points ahead of the field. So it was almost certain that he would win the tournament. He scored 6/9 on the final day to finish with 27/36, a massive four points ahead of the field. Wesley So (USA), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) and Alireza Firouzja (FRA) scored 23/36 each to share second place. D Gukesh and Vidit Gujrathi scored 14/36 and 13.5/36 each to be placed at seventh and ninth position respectively. MVL played the most beautiful game of the day against Levon Aronian (USA). This is Caruana's second consecutive GCT event triumph. He is currently leading the GCT standings with 22.25 points. 57th Biel GMT: Haik Martirosyan triumphs in Rapid, Praggnanandhaa second

Haik Martirosyan (ARM) scored an unbeaten 7/10 to win the Rapid event of 57th Biel International Chess Festival 2024 GMT. R Praggnanandhaa, Vincent Keymer (GER) and Liem Quang Le (VIE) scored 5/10 each. They were placed second to fourth according to tie-breaks (Chess960 standings). Praggnanandhaa had a tough day as he scored his sole win over Keymer, before finishing the event with a loss against Sam Shankland (USA). GM Alexander Donchenko (GER) won the Challengers event scoring 7/10. GM R Vaishali scored 5/10 to finish at fourth place. She defeated Ihor Samunenkhov (UKR) and Marc` Andria Maurizzi (FRA). Skillcraft and Eminent Chess Academy is organizing 1st Pro Skillcraft Rapid Rating Open 2024. The tournament will take place on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th July. The inaugural edition of this event is offering a first prize of ₹50000 and a total prize fund of ₹640000. Total 147 prizes including 75 age group prizes are up for grabs. Entry is FREE for GM, IM, WGM and WIMs. For others, it is ₹3000. Entry fee is ₹1500 for differently abled players. Over 300 players have already registered. Last date of registration: 25th July. SuperUnited Blitz 2024: Fabiano Caruana increases his sole lead by a staggering 4.5 points

Fabiano Caruana (USA) increased his sole lead by a whopping 4.5 points at SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2024. Despite starting the day with a loss against Ian Nepomniachtchi, Caruana won the next four games in-a-row, before losing to Alireza Firouzja (FRA). Caruana was completely winning against the France no.1. However, he made a one-move rook blunder in a winning endgame. Speaking of Frenchman, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave scored 6.5/9 to move to shared second place with Wesley So at 16.5/27. They are followed by Firouzja at 14.5/27. Only top six have a mathematical possibility of reaching Caruana's present score. The last nine rounds of Blitz will be played today from 2 p.m. local time, 5:30 p.m. IST. 57th Biel GMT: R Praggnanandhaa wins Accentus Chess960

R Praggnanandhaa and Haik Martirosyan (ARM) scored 5/7 each at Accentus Chess960, the opening event of 57th Biel International Chess Festival 2024 GMT. Praggnanandhaa won the event as he had defeated Haik in the third round. Vincent Keymer (GER) scored 4.5/7 to secure third place. The standings of this event will be used as a tie-break if required after the conclusion of the Grandmaster Triathlon (GMT). GM Alexander Donchenko (GER) won the Challengers event 5.5/7. GM Jonas Buhl Bjerre (DEN) secured second place. GM Salem Saleh (UAE) finished third 3/7. GM R Vaishali was placed fourth 2/7. The Rapid event will start today, Sunday 14th July. The legend of Bangladesh Chess - Ziaur Rahman (1974-2024)

Ziaur Rahman, the 2nd grandmaster of Bangladesh and the player to have reached the highest Elo by a Bangladeshi (2570) passed away on 5th of July while playing a game of chess at the Bangladesh National Championships 2024. He suffered a heart attack and collapsed to the ground. Ziaur was just 50 years old. In this article we look back at his life and remember what a gem of a person he was both on and off the board and we also have heartfelt messages from some of the top Indian GMs.

Fabiano Caruana tops SuperUnited Rapid 2024, extends his sole lead by three points

Fabiano Caruana (USA) won all three games on the third day to finish at the top of SuperUnited Rapid 2024. He has increased his sole lead by three points. D Gukesh had a good chance in the queen and minor piece endgame against Caruana. However, his cautious approach made him miss the opportunity. Caruana then defeated Anish Giri (NED) and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) to finish the rapid portion scoring 15/18. Wesley So (USA) and Levon Aronian (USA) are at second and third position scoring 12/18 and 11/18 each respectively. Gukesh scored his lone win of the day against Ivan Saric (CRO). Vidit Gujrathi secured his first victory of the event against Alireza Firouzja (FRA). He blundered in the final round against Ian Nepomniachtchi at a moment where he could have gained a substantial advantage. Soram Rahul Singh scored an unbeaten 8.5/10 to win 2nd Karimganj Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. FM Syed Mahfuzur Rahman scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. Top seed Kushal O and Snehaal Roy scored 7.5/10 each. They were placed third and fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Soram drew with the eventual runner-up Mahfuzur and defeated the second runner-up, Kushal. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹230000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. The tournament was organized by Karimganj District Chess Association at DSA Karimganj Indoor Stadium in Karimganj, Assam from 22nd to 27th June 2024. SuperUnited Rapid 2024 R4-6: Gukesh bounces back strong by winning against MVL and Nepomniachtchi

D Gukesh made a strong comeback on the second day of Grand Chess Tour SuperUnited Rapid 2024. He started by defeating the previous day leader, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA). The former World Blitz champion, blundered a mate in four which cost him the game. In Round 5, Gukesh had a topsy-turvy game against Vidit Gujrathi. It could have gone either player's way. However, it ended in a draw by perpetual check. In Round 6, Gukesh defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi by doing a beautiful king shuffle from queenside to the kingside. Fabiano Caruana (USA) emerged sole leader 9/12. Wesley So (USA) is at 8/12. They are followed by Gukesh, MVL and Alireza Firouzja (FRA) at 7/12. Both Gukesh and Caruana scored 5/6 on day two.
