88th Tata Steel 2026 R6: Abdusattorov gains sole lead after Gukesh blunders

by Shahid Ahmed - 24/01/2026

D Gukesh had a tough outcome in Round 6 of 88th Tata Steel Masters 2026. In a relatively balanced major piece endgame, the reigning World Champion made a terrible mistake and blundered his rook in one move. Of course, Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) seized his opportunity and it was over. Abdusattorov - Gukesh battles are always exciting but this time it had an unfortunate finish which made Gukesh's opponent feel sorry for him. Arjun Erigaisi and Aravindh Chithambaram drew against Matthias Bluebaum (GER) and Javokhir Sindarov (UZB) respectively. However, both Arjun and Aravindh made narrow escape as they had losing positions. R Praggnanandhaa played a 122-move marathon draw against Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO). Round 7 starts today at 2 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST for both Masters and Challengers section. Photo: Lennart Ootes / Tata Steel Chess

Challengers: Andy Woodward emerges sole leader, Vedant draws against Suleymanli

GM Andy Woodward won the All-American clash against IM Carissa Yip to become sole leader 5/6 in the Challengers section. FM Vedant Panesar drew against one of the leaders, GM Aydin Suleymanli (AZE).

Abdusattorov - Gukesh: 1-0

The battle between Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB, 2751) and the reigning World Champion, D Gukesh (2754) are always exciting. In case you missed it, you can check out my interview with Abdusattorov where he answered why their rivalry produces exciting games. They have played 14 Classical rated games against each other. Gukesh won two, Abdusattorov one and the remaining eleven games ended in draws.

Position after 36.Qf5

After 36.Qf5 Black could have played almost anything 36...Rf8/fxe5/Qc3/Qb2 and things would have been fine. Instead, he had a momentary blind spot and played 36...Rg5?? 37.Qxf6+ dropped the rook and Black resigned almost immediately as there was no reason left to continue.

Bluebaum - Arjun: 0.5-0.5

Matthias Bluebaum (GER, 2679) and Arjun Erigaisi (2775) played two Classical rated games against each other in the last two years. Both of them scored a win each over the other. In their third Classical battle, Bluebaum got himself a substantial advantage for a significant amount of the game. However, he could not make the most out of his opportunities.

Aravindh - Sindarov: 0.5-0.5

Aravindh Chithambaram (2700) and FIDE World Cup 2025 winner, Javokhir Sindarov (UZB, 2726) faced each other twice in Classical rated games. Sindarov won both of them. He was on the verge of winning their Classical battle too but in time trouble he completely missed his opportunity and allowed his opponent to escape with a draw.

Fedoseev - Praggnanandhaa: 0.5-0.5

R Praggnanandhaa (2758) and Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO, 2705) played only one Classical rated game each other. It occurred at the same event last year, Praggnanandhaa won that game. This time they played a 122-move marathon draw where the better part of the game was an equal rook endgame.
