Asian Nations Cup 03: back in business

31/03/2016 -

And the winner of Fritz 15 is....!

31/03/2016 -

When Vishy Anand was playing at the Candidates 2016, we set up a page where chess fans could send their wishes to the Indian champion. We received 67 wishes from people all over India, a few even from foreigners. The best entry would get a Vishy Anand signed copy of Fritz 15. It was a difficult choice as many of the entries were well-written and a lot of thought was put behind them. Finally we have the winner and also an annotated game by Anand himself!

Asian Nations Cup 02: India hold China!

30/03/2016 -

The poor live transmission has hit the coverage of the prestigious Asian Nations Cup 2016, with an ancient website of the Asian Chess Federation well below the mark in promoting our game. In the women's section, India took on China for a mouth-watering clash, and nobody had any clue what the results were. Indian Men's team was expected to roll through Mongolia. So, what exactly happened? A report with games.

Doeberl Cup 2016: Ganguly finishes second

30/03/2016 -

You know that Australia is a sport-crazy country, but what about chess? Back in 1963, when one chess lover envisioned the development of the royal game down under, he started more than just a tournament. More than half a century since its beginning, Doeberl Cup still continues to prosper and India's GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly made his way to the land of Kangaroos for the 2016 edition. Report.

Anand third at the Candidates 2016

30/03/2016 -

It is said that the game of chess is getting younger and younger every day. But here is a 46-year-old man who not only fought for the top places in a grueling event like the Candidates, but was matching blow for blow against opponents nearly half his age. Vishy Anand provided us with some edge of the seat entertainment at the Moscow Candidates, finishing with 7.5/14 and a respectable third place. He went home richer by Euros 81,500! Here is an article which gives a summary about the tournament from the point of view of the Indian Champion.

Interview with Abhijeet Gupta

29/03/2016 -

26-year-old GM Abhijeet Gupta tasted a resounding success recently when he won the extremely strong Reykjavik Open 2016 in Iceland. And this is not the first time he is stamping his class by winning a strong Open. He has done this time and again. The Indian, the last one to win a World Junior for our country, granted ChessBase India a crisp interview, where he details his approach to chess, his career and more.

The Asian Nations Cup 2016

29/03/2016 -

The Asian Nations Cup Chess Championship began yesterday at the Novotel Abu Dhabi Al Bustan hotel with 20 countries competing for the right to represent Asia in the World Chess Team Championship. Team India, led by top coaches R.B. Ramesh and Vishal Sareen, are obvious contenders for the title in both the men's and women's section, but we are facing the great wall of China, the country that remains the overwhelming favourite. A quick report introducing the tournament.

Anand draws Giri, cannot win the Candidates now

28/03/2016 -

After the opening it seemed as if Giri would press on for quite a while. However, in the middlegame he sacrificed a piece, which was practically very interesting but objectively bad. It gave Anand the much needed chance he required to win the game. But with the impending time pressure it wasn't easy to play for both sides. Anand was a piece up but made a few inaccuracies and the game was drawn. It was result which ended Anand's chances to be the next challenger. Nonetheless the game was interesting and here are the analysis by IM Sagar Shah

Send your wishes to Vishy in Moscow

27/03/2016 -

Vishy Anand is fighting it out in Moscow at the Candidates 2016. Two rounds remain and he is currently in the third position half point behind Karjakin and Caruana. After the third round we had launched this page where by sending your best wishes to Vishy Anand you stood a chance to win a signed copy of Fritz 15 by five-time World Champion himself. The best wish at the end of the tournament gets the prize. Until now we have received 48 wishes. Use the disqus comments section on this page to send your message to our hero. ChessBase India founders Sagar Shah and Amruta Mokal are in Moscow and they will be showing this page to Anand at the end of the tournament.

Nakamura outprepares Anand!

26/03/2016 -

Anand was completely outprepared in the sharp line of the English Opening by Hikaru Nakamura. He got a poor position out of the opening and the American played some accurate moves to take home the full point in just 26 moves. Words cannot have the same effect as variations, so here are some detailed analysis by IM Sagar Shah from the Central Telegraph building in Moscow.

An endgame lesson by Vishy Anand!

25/03/2016 -

“Happy Holi, Vishy! Can I put some colour on you?” these were the words with which a little girl approached Anand as he was about to leave the tournament hall at the end of a long day. “Happy Holi to you too, but no colour!” replied Vishy with a smile. After five and half hours of grinding on the chess board and then giving interviews, posing for pictures, signing autographs, and being extremely hungry, the last thing that Vishy wanted to do was to take a shower! It is truly ironic that even though Anand didn’t want to indulge in festivities of Holi, he had filled the life of every chess lover in the country with colour and glow. He played an amazing endgame to beat Sergey Karjakin in the 11th round of Candidates 2016. Detailed analysis by IM Sagar Shah

Caruana plays a brilliant game to beat Anand

23/03/2016 -

There are days when things go completely wrong, and for Vishy Anand 23rd of March was one such day. Caruana guessed correctly the opening that he would play, had a very interesting novelty prepared and followed it up with some excellent moves. Almost until the last move was made, Fabiano played with utmost accuracy. Anand's stoic face at the press conference said the story. He was beaten even without having a chance to fight. It was a one sided battle. But as is true with every chess game, there is always a lot to be learnt. Analysis by IM Sagar Shah

Save our friend Mangesh

23/03/2016 -

Robert Frost once famously said that if he had learnt anything about life, it is that it goes on. People around the world die in a number beyond our imagination but people are born in even greater numbers -- the cycle will continue without waiting for you and me. But often, when you really want to help somebody, save a life, it is more a question of the will to help by joining hands than anything else. Mangesh Parab, a chess playing friend like we are, was diagnosed with cancer in 2004, and three operations later, he is free of his brain tumour, but with one last detail to attend to -- chemotherapy for a year. A physical battle with the emperor of maladies has failed to break the man, although he lies on the battlefield awaiting his comrades' help. He is fast running out of resources, and now the only way he can continue a year's treatment is with our help. An appeal from a fellow chess lover.
