50% after seven rounds for Hari

03/06/2016 -

After seven rounds at the Shamkir Chess 2016 Harikrishna is on 3.5/7. His sixth round game against Hou Yifan was a solid draw with the black pieces. However, in the seventh round Hari had his back against the wall against Rauf Mamedov. It was only through highly resourceful play that he managed to hold a draw. With Radjabov and Safarli to go in the last two rounds, a win against them will ensure a good finish for the Indian. We have game analysis of rounds six and seven and some nice pictures of the free day.

Hari's Evergreen game!

01/06/2016 -

In the fifth round of Shamkir Chess 2016, Hari was up against Pavel Eljanov. The Ukrainian grandmaster is famed for his solid play and theoretical knowledge. In order to negate that the Indian played a less known line and was ready to sacrifice pawns and pieces in order to complicate the battle! Although the attack wasn't theoretically winning, Pavel was walking on a thin rope. He had to be accurate on each and every move. Not an easy task. He blundered and the reward was a full point to Harikrishna!

Semi Tarrasched by Giri!

After his debacle in the third round against Sergey Karjakin, the Indian fans were hoping for Harikrishna to make a comeback against Anish Giri. However, the Dutch grandmaster had come to the game in an inspired mood. He got an interesting position out of the opening and sacrificed a pawn to launch a strong attack against the black king. It was one those thematic pawn sacrifices which you should be aware of. Have a look at the game and learn how Harikrishna could have avoided such a swift defeat.

Praggnanandhaa — International Master!

The kids were so good at chess that they kept winning titles at state, national and international levels. Coming from a humble background, Rameshbabu was struggling to afford his children's leap to the higher planes of chess competition. Making decisions in such a situation of conflict due to the lack of resources is difficult. But what do they say about life balancing things out eventually? Praggnanandhaa R. just completed the requirements an hour back, and at the age of ten years and ten months, has become the youngest International Master of the world, ever!

29/05/2016 -

The rest was not at all difficult for Sergey who mopped up the game efficiently. Pictures, game analysis and critical moments.

27/05/2016 -

Harikrishna came excellently prepared in the first round of the Shamkir Chess 2016. He faced the top seed Fabiano Caruana with the black pieces and didn't back down from a fight. The sharp Sicilian Taimanov with opposite sides castling and pawn storms made it a highly interesting battle. It seemed as if the US Champion was a tad quicker in opening the lines. But a timely queen exchange helped Harikrishna to secure a draw. We have the in-depth game analysis with the explanation of the critical positions.
