Mumbai is set to organise the Chess Solving Contest on Sunday, May 11 at Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla! From 2 PM to 7 PM, participants will solve artistic chess puzzles of specially composed positions like mate-in-2, endgame studies, helpmates, and selfmates. There are two categories for the contest: Experienced solvers and newcomers. Around 35 entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The entry fee for this contest is ₹100. Top performers will get cash prizes worth ₹10,000. So if you enjoy chess and love solving puzzles, this event is for you! Webster University and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley are cochampions at President's Cup 2025

Webster University and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley were announced as cochampions of President's Cup 2025. Both teams scored 7/12 each. Their head-to-head opening round battle ended in a 2-2 draw. According to the rules, Webster got the trophy as they had better tie-break scores. Saint Louis University scored 6/12 to finish third and The University of Texas at Dallas finish fourth scoring 4/12. GM Harsha Bharathakoti contributed 1/3 for Webster University. GM Yasser Quesada Perez is the top scorer 2.5/3 for his team. GM Jose Gabriel Cardososo Cardoso is the highest scorer 2.5/3, for his team UTRGV. New Champions crowned at Japan Cadets and Youth Chess Championships 2025

The first weekend of April 2025, saw two events conducted simultaneous in Tokyo – The Japan Youth Chess Championship and the Japan Cadets Chess Championship. A total of 130 players participated in the two events combined. Mayur Gondhalekar writes about these two events. CM Cocoro Matsumura became the Youth (U-18) champion scoring an unbeaten 5.5/6. KCA 1st GM R4: Rajesh Vav makes a perfect start

WIM Diajeng Theresa Singgih (INA) defeated her second consecutive IM opponent at KCA's God's Own Country's 1st GM 2025. The Indonesian IM defeated IM Maksim Schekachikhin to maintain a perfect score 4/4. Four players are currently at 4/4. They are - top seed, GM Karen H Grigoryan (ARM), GM Levan Pantsulaia (GEO), IM Rajesh Vav and Theresa. Rajesh defeated Samarth Rajesh Ragavan comfortably. Ahaz E U missed a win against GM Tornike Sanikidze (GEO). IM Dinesh Kumar Sharma, Shrayan Majumder and Paras Dilip Bhoir had well contested draws against GM Deepan Chakkravarthy, GM Van Huy Nguyen (VIE) and GM Marat Dzhumaev (UZB) respectively. He will face GM SL Narayanan with the White pieces in the final round tomorrow! GM SL Narayanan won a wonderful game with the White pieces against GM Luca Moroni. IM Loic Travadon has his GM Norm confirmed for the final round tomorrow, and FM Francesco Bettalli has good chances to score his GM Norm if he can draw against GM Leon Mendonca in the final round tomorrow! Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi and Praggnanandhaa maintain their position in World top ten

The ranking among the men did not see a major change as most of them played Freestyle event. It is not FIDE rated. However, very few played Bundesliga games which did not affect their rating much. The World Champion remains at World no.3 position for the third consecutive FIDE rating list. Seven Indians are still in top 30. GM Nihal Sarin, GM Raunak Sadhwani and GM Karthikeyan Murali gained 5.7, 7.3 and 7.2 Elo rating points each. GM Koneru Humpy returned to World no.5 among women after winning the FIDE Pune GP. IM Divya Deshmukh also returned to her previous rank of World no.19 among women after finishing third at the aforementioned event. There she increased her rating by 9.2 points. On Tuesday 29th April, LG India published videos on their fb and twitter social pages, announcing IM Vantika Agrawal as their Brand Ambassador. Originally annonunced on International Women's Day, 8th March, the 45th Olympiad double Gold medalist and Arjuna Awardee has attained this new role for one of the most globally recognized brands. LG is known for consumer electronic products and almost everyone these days has at least one item from LG, if not multiple. KCA 1st GM R2-3: Deekshitha Modipalli outplays Manuel Petrosyan

WCM Deekshitha Modipalli scored the biggest upset of the tournament when she defeated the second seeded, GM Manuel Petrosyan (ARM). The Armenian won the strong 3rd Maharashtra GM 2025 few days ago. So this win is certainly special for the 12-year-old girl. She made a sound pawn sacrifice on the tenth move and later on built a strong pawn mass in the center which helped her to win the game. Nameet Chavan swindled IM Mehar Chinna Reddy. GM Christopher Yoo defeated GM Francesco Sonis to take the sole leader with an extraordinary 6.5/7 points. IM Miguoel Admiral took down GM Leon Mendonca with the Black pieces in a wild game full of ups and downs. Balkishan wins 2nd Maharashtra Chess Festival Below 2200 Rating Tournament 2025

Balkishan A, Advik Amit Agrawal, Kartavya Anadkat and Nameet Chavan scored 7.5/9 each at 2nd Maharashtra Chess Festival Below 2200 Rating Tournament 2025. Balkishan won the tournament due to better tie-break scores. The remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively. Only Kartavya remained undefeated among them. The total prize fund was ₹1000000. The top three prizes were ₹110000, ₹95000 and ₹85000 along with a trophy each. The four-day nine round Below 2200 rating tournament was  organized by Maharashtra Chess Association from 20th to 23rd April 2025 at Amanora Mall in Pune, Maharashtra. Arpan Das clear first at Sivasagar Rating Open 2025

Arpan Das scored an unbeaten 8.5/10 to win Sivasagar Rating Open 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Soram Rahul Singh and FM Kumar Gaurav scored 8/10 each. They secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹35000, ₹25000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each respectively. The six-day ten round Rating Open tournament was organized by Sivasagar Chess Academy at Milan Mondir in Sivasagar, Assam from 5th to 10th April 2025. This is Arpan's third overall, second consecutive rating tournament triumph of the year in Assam.

Vladimir Fedoseev dominates Superbet Rapid and Blitz 2025, Praggnanandhaa third

Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO) scored 26.5/36 to win Grand Chess Tour Superbet Rapid and Blitz 2025 with three rounds to spare. He remained undefeated in Rapid, posted one of the highest scores ever in GCT and suffered only one loss against Jan-Krzysztof Duda (POL) in Blitz Round 12. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) made a strong comeback on the final day by scoring 7/9, total 21.5/36 to secure second place. R Praggnanandhaa scored 5/9 on the second day of Blitz to finish third with a total score of 20.5/36. The top three prizes were US$ 40000, 30000 and 25000.
