Vishy Anand played a super solid tournament with eight draws and one win to finish joint second at the Sinquefield Cup 2016. Vishy, who will turn 47 in four months from now is competing on par with guys like So, Nakamura, Caruana, Giri, MVL etc. who are half his age. Wesley So played a great tournament and won the event with a score of +2. We have analysis from rounds eight and nine and also the reason why Anish finished on the last spot in the tournament.
In a bitter turn of events for the Indian National Champion GM Murali Karthikeyan, the white pieces did not prove enough as he went down to the second seed, USA's GM Jeffrey Xiong. There were more surprises in store. The third seed Alekseenko lost to Nasuta, while Yinglun beat the top seed Artemiev. The Dutch Open 2016 was held from the 26th of July to 4th August 2016 in the small town of Dieren in Netherlands. Indian GM Sandipan Chanda won the tournament in style and we will be reporting on it pretty soon. As of now we have a wonderful story sent to us by Sahil Tickoo. He and his friend Vaibhav went to the tournament without any hotel bookings. The result was an adventure of a lifetime! They now share it with you through this entertaining article.
The competition saw a dour day at the top tables as most of the games ended in draws. The top seed and the leader — Artemiev with white and Karthikeyan with black—drew their game. With 5.0/6, GM Murali Karthikeyan of Tamil Nadu continues to lead the tournament. A bunch of players is pursuing the leader Karthikeyan at the second spot with 4.5/6.
Vishy Anand began the Sinquefield Cup with 2.0/3. In the next four rounds he played out four draws against Ding Liren, Wesley So, Anish Giri and Levon Aronian. But none of the games were dull. Six players went into the fifth day of play tied at 3.5/4. While both the top two board games by the first and the second seeds ended in a draw, GM Murali Karthikeyan beat German IM Rasmus Svane with the white pieces to become the tournament’s first sole leader with 4.5/5. Karthikeyan has a knack of outperforming others in pressure situations. It remains to be seen how well India’s 2015 National Champion fares in the coming days.
The World Juniors are currently in progress in India to determine the strongest Junior player in the World. Strong players like Artemiev, Xiong, Wagner, Alekseenko, Chithambaram, Karthikeyan etc. fight it out for the gold medal. In the girl's section we have Saduakassova, Bivol, Bodda and others as the top seed.
