IM Arghyadip Das wins 1st Queen’s Gambit Rapid Chess

The 1st Queen's Gambit rapid chess was held on the 14th and 15th of January 2017 in Kolkata. It was a strong tournament with the first prize of Rs.15,000 and the participation of two IMs and one WGM. IM Arghyadip Das of Railways emerged victorious followed by IM Suvrajit Saha. The most impressive part about the tournament was the organization - no spot entries, beginning the games on time and ending them before the schedule. Tournament organizer Shahid Ahmed sends us an illustrated report.

Tata Steel 07: Adhiban 'polishes' off Wojtaszek

The Tata Steel Masters is turning out to be a riveting book of mystery. Every passing page (round) makes the plot all the more interesting. India's B. Adhiban proved that his win over Sergey Karjakin was no fluke as he defeated Radoslaw Wojtaszek. There were many misses, but none so drastic as Magnus missing a mate in three against Giri. The 92nd edition of the Hastings Chess Congress was held at the Horntyte Park Sports Complex between December 28, 2016 and January 5, 2017. The 100 player field included 12 Grandmasters and 14 international Masters from 23 countries. Beating that stiff a competition, after 9 rounds of play, India's GM Deep Sengupta emerged victorious with a score of 7.0/9. In the following interview, Deep talks about his shaky start at the event, when and how he began playing chess, his forthcoming marriage and a lot more.

Chennai 02+03: No Play due to Protests

The fourth round of Chennai Open 2017 was scheduled to be held on 20 January 2017. Things were on course when news arrived that Chennai is enforcing a 12-hour shutdown on itself in protest against the Supreme Court ruling on Jallikattu, a popular Tamil ethnic sport. The organizers were forced to abandon the idea of playing a round amidst this protest and postponed it to the next day. The games finally began an hour back. Niklesh Jain reports from Chennai.

The sixth round of the Tata Steel Masters 2017 was extremely exciting. Adhiban played the King's Gambit against Wesley So and managed to outprepare him. In the end the game was drawn. Harikrishna botched up an excellent position against Wojtaszek. Rapport versus Wei Yi was a slugfest, while Giri managed to win a game after fourteen consecutive draws. Tata Steel 05: Adhiban stuns Karjakin!

How does it feel to beat the World Champion in Defence by showing some excellent defensive skills? Ask B. Adhiban! The Indian grandmaster played the French Defence for the first time in his life and beat the World Championship Challenger Sergey Karjakin. Harikrishna slumped to a defeat against Wesley So. So is now the leader after Aronian beat Eljanov. The fifth round was held in the Feyenoord Football stadium and we have pictures, detailed analysis and videos.

Pavel Eljanov beat B. Adhiban in the fourth round of the Tata Steel Masters 2017. Before the first rest day, he leads the tournament with 3.5/4. Magnus Carlsen and Wesley So are right behind him on 3.0/4. Harikrishna drew his game against Sergey Karjakin and is on +1 after four rounds. On the rest day Loek van Wely challenged Magnus Carlsen to a football match. The World Champion's team was ruthless as they won with a score of 6:2.

Delhi 10: Amonatov wins; 5 Indians in Top-10

The biggest Open in India, probably the world, came to an end with Tajik GM Farrukh Amonatov taking first place with a quick draw in the final round. GM Diptayan Ghosh finished second as Indians took five of the top ten positions. Niranjan Navalgund scored his first grandmaster norm in the ninth round itself but two more norms were scored. Tata Steel 03: Two draws for Indians, brilliances by Wei Yi and Rapport

It was a day of two draws for the Indian players, but not uneventful ones. Adhiban's London System was quite hard for Levon Aronian to crack, while Harikrishna gave Eljanov some anxious moments before the game ended in a draw. Two youngsters Wei Yi and Richard Rapport played some excellent chess but had contrasting results. Wei Yi was rewarded with a full point, while Richard lost a better position to Wesley So. Sarasadat Khademalsharieh, better known as Sara Khadem, is a 19-year-old International Master from Iran. Women in Iran are traditionally banned from attending many sporting events. Harikrishna has a unique way of playing chess. His opening preparation is not the most ambitious in the world, but he likes to pose small problems to his opponents. He likes to get playable positions which he enjoys, it doesn't matter if the computers shout out =(0.00).
