Himal Gusain wins Delhi Open FIDE Rated

Delhi Chess Association is probably the best chess association in India. There simply remains no contest when it comes to the quality and professionalism in the tournaments. Like the Wright brothers who invented the concept of humans flying in airplanes, the Delhi chess fraternity has invented the idea of professional chess players making money with the prize fund. One such tournament finished this week with 727 players and 17 lakhs 17 thousand rupees in prize.

IBCA Asia Pacific Chess Championship for Visually Challenged is taking place in Manipal University. An eight rounds event, it commenced on 22nd of March and will be concluded on 31st March. With two more rounds to go, Kishan Gangolli has emerged as sole leader. The first of its kind Radio Chess Broadcasting has been introduced in this tournament - an internet chess radio app made especially for blind players. We bring you pictures, games and more.

ChessBase author Srinath Narayanan has become India's 46th grandmaster. 23-year-old Srinath, who is a former prodigy, former World Under-12 Champion, and had become an International Master at the age 14 has crossed the 2500 mark a few moments back by beating David Anton Guijarro (2676) with black at the Sharjah Masters 2017.

Rounds four and five of the Sharjah Master open saw the final confrontations between hugely disparate ratings, with top boards still facing as much as 600 Elo differences. Shenzhen Masters 03-05: Anish Giri and Ding Liren lead

It has been a very balanced tournament so far, and if Harikrishna was the first to score a win in round two, in round three, he lost to Anish Giri, who thoroughly outplayed him in a Sicilian. Ding Liren also kept the screws tight on Peter Svidler with his bishops against knights. All games were drawn in round four and five, leaving Ding Liren and Anish Giri in the lead.

Women's chess in India is currently dominated today by two players: Humpy Koneru and Harika Dronavalli. However, before they were born a little girl from Chennai was creating ripples, winning almost all the age group Nationals. Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman went on to become India’s first WGM and also the country's first female IM. We wish Viji a Happy Birthday today with a very special interview that was done 2 years back.

The Sharjah Masters 2017 was off to a rollicking start with about 86 Indian players competing. This takes the phrase 'home away from home' to a completely different level. While there were many upset draws, the one thing that stood out was the number of no-shows. The biggest upsets of the day for Indians were scored by Viani Antonio Dcunha, Vignesh NR and Nihal Sarin.
