FIDE Women's World Championship 2020 starts with a draw

FIDE Women's World Championship Match 2020 begins at Shanghai, China on 5th January 2020 between the defending the champion GM Ju Wenjun (China) and the Challenger for the championship GM Aleksandra Goryachkina (Russia). The first match ended in a hard-fought draw, played for over five hours. They will play six games at Shanghai, China and the next six games at Vladivostok, Russia. The first player to score 6.5 points will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, tie-breaker games will be played. In the first game, Goryachkina got the white pieces and she opted for a Closed Catalan system. In game 2, Ju will get the white pieces. Photo: Zhang Yanhong / FIDE

14 Indian talents to train with Kramnik and Gelfand in Chennai

The Microsense Kramnik Gelfand chess program is here. From the 8th to the 17th of January 2020, 14 of the brightest talents of Indian chess will train with two of the legends in the world of chess - Vladimir Kramnik and Boris Gelfand. The camp will be held in Chennai. This is the second training camp, after the successful completion of the first one in August 2019. Apart from the six students who attended the first camp, eight more students have been included in the training camp. These 14 students have been handpicked by Kramnik and Gelfand and will receive intensive training over the next ten days. Microsense Private Limited is the sponsor of the program, while ChessBase India founders Sagar Shah and Amruta Mokal will be managers of the event. 

Himal Gusain triumphs in 4th Dalmia Cements All India Open 2019

IM Himal Gusain scored 8.5/9, remained undefeated and finished a full point ahead of the field to become champion in 4th Dalmia Cements All India Open 2019. Local talent Priyanka Kumari and 13-year-old Arya Bhakta both finished at 7.5/9. They were placed second and third according to their tie-break score. While, Himal received a beautiful trophy and got richer by ₹50000 cash, Priyanka and Arya received ₹30000 and ₹20000 cash prize each respectively. Total 239 players participated from eight states across the nation from 26th to 30th December 2019, organized by All Jharkhand Chess Association at Sarala Birla University. Mrityunjay Kumar wins Chess for Everyone All India Open Faridabad 2019

Mrityunjay Kumar of Bihar scored an unbeaten 8.0/9 to win Chess for Everyone FIDE Rated Open 2019. Three players finished with the score of 8.0/9. Local lad Uttam Prakash Sharma of Haryana and unrated Shivam Saxena were placed second and third according to their tie-break score. Total 276 players participated from various states all over the country. Total prize fund ₹63000 and Corfom mattresses and yoga mat worth ₹50000 was distributed among the prize winners. Adam Tukhaev and Hesham Abdelrahman lead the IIFL WEALTH GM Open

The IIFL WEALTH International Chess Tournament is taking place from the 30th of December 2019 to 7th of January 2020 at the Cuffe Parade-colaba in Mumbai. The open event this year has attracted more than 150 players from as many as 23 different countries including 25 Grandmasters and 28 International Masters. Abhijeet Gupta, Vaibhav Suri, Abhimanyu Puranik, Sandipan Chanda are some of the big names competing from India; while Aleksej Aleksandrov, Yakubboev Nodirbek, Alexei Fedorov, and Adam Tukhaev are among the prominent foreigners vying for the championship title. Prantik Roy wins 21st MCA All Bengal Rapid Rating Open

Starting out as the top seed of the tournament, IM Prantik Roy scored 7.5/8, finished a half point ahead of the competition, remained undefeated to win 21st MCA All Bengal Rapid Rating Open 2019. He is also the reigning State Rapid champion and the runner-up at 1st SAARC Chess 2019. Five players finished at 7.0/8. IM Aronyak Ghosh and Arpan Das Jr. scored 7.0/8 each and they were placed second and third respectively. Total 294 players participated in this two-day All Bengal Open Rapid Rating event. Akshay Anand wins nurtr DCA Rapid Rating Open 2019

Akshay Anand scored 8.0/9, remained undefeated to win nurtr DCA Rapid Rating Open. He won ₹11000 cash and a beautiful trophy as a prize. Both Aradhya Garg and FM Aaryan Varshney also finished at 8.0/9, however they were placed second and third respectively according to their tie-break score. Total ₹101000 prize fund was distributed among the prize winners. Harsha, Vidit, Nihal impressive at World Blitz 2019

Harsha Bharathakoti surprised by defeating Nihal Sarin in the final round of World Blitz 2019 and finishing with 13.0/21. Thus becoming the best Indian performer at World Blitz 2019, ranked 28th.  Why is it a surprise? Because Harsha finished day 1 of Blitz with only 5.5/12. Vidit Gujrathi and Nihal Sarin both were impressive and they did not disappoint with their performance. They scored some fine victories over Dmitry Andreikin, Sergey Karjakin and Ian Nepomniachtchi. They held their own against some of the best of the world. Among the women, both Humpy and Harika made a solid start. Humpy was in the lead till round 13. Upcoming tournaments in January 2020

Since 2019 was a packed year full of tournaments, the new year of the decade 2020 is supposed to be a well balanced calendar for all players. Women's World Championship starts on 3rd January at Shanghai, China and it will conclude on 26th January at Vladivostok, Russia. The 82nd edition of Tata Steel Masters will witness the new World Triple Crown champion Magnus Carlsen along with Vishy Anand and other Elite players in action. In the challengers section, Surya Sekhar Ganguly and Nihal Sarin will duke it out with other players. One of the strongest Open tournaments, Gibraltar International Chess Festival will start on 20th January. Yakkuboev wins Bhopal International GM Open, Venkatesh finishes second

Central India's biggest tournament of 2019, Bhopal International GM Open came conclusion by crowning GM Nodirbek Yakubboev of Uzbekistan as the champion of the tournament. He remained undefeated in all ten games. This was the most exciting finish in Bhopal International tournament history as six players finished with a score of 8.0/10. Tie-break scores decided the final standings. India's highest rated player in the event, fifth seeded GM Venkatesh M R secured the runner-up position to make his country proud.
