The story of how Arjun Kalyan became India's 68th GM at the age of 18 years

On 20th of April 2021, Arjun Kalyan became the 68th Grandmaster of India. He did so in Serbia by beating GM Dragan Kosic and crossing the Elo barrier of 2500. Born in 2002, Arjun is just 18 years old. Apart from becoming a GM, Arjun is also a brilliant student and scored 95% in his 12th standard exams. How has this lad managed to achieve so much in chess as well as academics? What is his story? Just 80 minutes after he became a GM, we invited Arjun to a Live interview on the ChessBase India channel. This article has the transcript of the entire interview, analysis of his victory that gave him the GM title and quotes + anecdotes from his parents and trainers.

Magnus Carlsen ends his championship drought by winning New in Chess Classic

There was no doubt about Carlsen ending his championship drought which started when he turned 30 years of age. Every time we all wondered that it might be this tournament, turns out New in Chess Classic is that tournament where Carlsen ended his curse. With this win Carlsen jumped to the top of the tour standings of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. Nakamura made a perfect start by winning the first game in the second set of the finals but of course that was not going to be enough as he had to win the second set. Unfortunately for him, he only managed to tie the set 2-2 and had to settle for the runner-up position. Mamedyarov beat Aronian 2.5-0.5 in the second set to secure the third position. Unstoppable Leon conquers three events in April 2021

GM Leon Luke Mendonca won all three Vezerkepzo tournaments he played this year. He won four consecutive over-the-board tournaments so far, starting with a victory at 2nd Kumania GM. He scored a massive 23.5/27 in April and became unbeaten champion in all of them. He finished a half point ahead of the competition in the first event, 1.5 points in ahead in the second and a whopping 2.0 points ahead in the third event. He is now at a 42 game unbeaten streak. New in Chess Classic Finals Day 1: Carlsen wins the first set

As always Carlsen and Nakamura did not disappoint in the first set of the finals of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour New in Chess Classic. After all these two have put on some classic matches during this online era. This time also they had two exciting draws and then Carlsen scored two consecutive wins to win the first set which means Nakamura must win the second set to force tie-breaks. Mamedyarov and Aronian are fighting for the third and fourth place but their games are nothing short of must-see as they exchanged wins in all four games to draw the first set 2-2. Arjun Erigaisi clinches Masthanaiah Rapid Rating Open 2021

The first quarter of 2021 witnessed very few rating tournaments in India because of the ongoing pandemic. While most of them got either cancelled or rescheduled, Masthanaiah Chess World took a big risk of holding a tournament with a total prize fund of ₹500000 which is the highest of the year so far and they did it successfully. A total of 288 players from all over the country took part in this event. Arjun Erigaisi won the event and received ₹100000 cash, Runner-up Harsha Bharathakoti received ₹50000 and Muthaiah Al earned ₹20000 cash prize. The day of making simple Berlin draws or playing fun openings are gone because it's the Semi-Finals of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour New in Chess Classic which means the gloves are off and it's time for bare knuckle brawl. That's exactly what happened as everyone lost at least one game in the Semi-Finals including Carlsen and Nakamura who were undefeated till Quarter-Finals. Meltwater Champions Chess Tour New in Chess Quarter-Finals witnessed the first set winner to have a smooth sailing towards the Semi-Finals. Carlsen will look for his first tournament triumph of the year as he faces Aronian in the Semi-Finals. Meanwhile Nakamura escaped the jaws of defeat twice against Liem to secure his spot in the Semi-Finals against Mamedyarov who has been completely dominant against Firouzja. B Giribabu wins Nellore District Senior Championship 2021

Top seed Bodugu Giribabu dominated the field as he scored 5.0/5 to win Nellore District Senior Chess Championship for the first time in his career. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. 8-year-old Mithilesh P was definitely the star performer of the event as he scored 4.5/5 and remained undefeated to secure the second position. The first set of Quarter-Finals in Meltwater Champions Chess Tour New in Chess saw a battle of equals as Carlsen-Radjabov encounter did not yield a single decisive result. Aronian, Mamedyarov and Nakamura won the first set. Firouzja and Liem are yet to score in the Knockout stage. Firouzja did a couple of tactical errors in the final moments of the game, so he will need to come back stronger. Liem and So will also need to win their second set to keep Semi-Final hopes alive for them. Quarter-Final games resumes tonight from 10:30 p.m. IST. FIDE Candidates 2020 R14: Redemption, Hat-trick and Retirement

The longest chess tournament in history - FIDE Candidates 2020 is finally over. The winner of the event and new Challenger for the World Championship lost his final round game against Ding Liren who finished the tournament with a hat-trick of wins. Vachier-Lagrave beat Hao Wang to finish sole second with 8.0/14. Anish Giri suffered a loss against Kirilll Alekseenko and he was placed third 7.5/14. Caruana made a draw with Grischuk, they finished with a score of 7.5/14 and 7.0/14 respectively. Meltwater Champions Chess Tour New in Chess Classic Day 3 witnessed Praggnanandhaa once again have another fantastic day. He started with a loss but then he beat Christiansen and drew with Carlsen, Nakamura and Firouzja. The world champion praised Pragg for his play. He might not have advanced to the next stage but he certainly showed that he can hold his own with the top players of the world. Vidit also finished with the same score as Pragg 7.0/15 and got eliminated from the event. Carlsen-Radjabov, Aronian-So, Mamedyarov-Firouzja and Liem-Nakamura are set to clash in the Quarter-Finals which starts tonight from 10:30 p.m. IST.
