Bhakti Kulkarni and Praggnanandhaa are the Arjuna Award 2022 recipients in Chess

Over two years ago, we published an article mentioning that no Arjuna Award was conferred to chess players for a really long time. The nine-year-long drought finally comes to an end in the form of IM Bhakti Kulkarni and GM R Praggnanandhaa. The last chess player who received the award before them was, GM Abhijeet Gupta back in 2013. India had about 35 Grandmasters then. The number has more than doubled over the past nine years and the list of accolades and laurels achieved by the Indian players keep increasing almost every day. Both Bhakti and Praggnanandhaa won a medal at the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022 - Bronze each. They are also Asian Continental champions, Praggnanandhaa won it last month while Bhakti in 2016. Tata Steel India 2022 Rapid R4-6: Unbeaten Nihal Sarin leaps to the pole position

Nihal Sarin scored 2.5/3 on the second day to become the sole leader 4.5/6 at Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Rapid. The 18-year-old won against Gukesh and Sethuraman, drew with Wesley So, to stay a full point ahead of the competition. His close friend Arjun Erigaisi and previous day leader, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE) are at 3.5/6 each. Both of them started their day with a loss. Hikaru Nakamura scored 2.5/3 to jump from ninth to fourth place. Vidit Gujrathi scored his first win of the event against Nodirbek Abdusattorov who suffered two consecutive defeats in round 4 and 5, before he defeated Sethuraman S P. Tata Steel India 2022 Women Rapid R4-6: Humpy almost displaces Dzagnidze at the top

GM Nana Dzagnidze continues her sole lead after the sixth round of Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Women Rapid. She drew all three of her games. GM Koneru Humpy got herself closest to ending the Georgian's unbeaten streak. However, despite her fantastic advantage in the opening, the India no.1 and World no.3 was unable to make the most out of her opportunity. She along with three more women - GM Anna Ushenina (UKR), GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) and IM Vaishali R are at 4/6 each. Vaishali started the day with a win over Anna Muzychuk, then she drew with GM Harika Dronavalli and went on to defeat WIM Savitha Shri B convincingly in round 6. Tata Steel India 2022 Rapid R1-3: The 'Shakh Attack' Unleashed

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov enchanted the chess universe with his fantastic play on the first day of Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Rapid. After a relatively paltry victory against Gukesh, the World no.14 exhibited some exemplary play scoring wins over Sethuraman and Wesley So. The third round win against So was excellent. Speaking of excellence, Arjun Erigaisi started the day with a brilliant win over Nodirbek Abdusattorov in a clash of the champions. Arjun slipped a bit in the next two games by somehow managing two draws, one was lost and another had a full point fingertips away. Nihal Sarin is also at an unbeaten 2/3 along with Arjun. Tata Steel India 2022 Women Rapid R1-3: Nana Dzagnidze makes a perfect start

GM Nana Dzagnidze has emerged as the sole leader after the first day of Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Women Rapid. The Georgia no.1 had a shaky start. The youngest player in the field, WIM Savitha Shri B missed a tactical opportunity against the Georgia no.1. However, the teenager overlooked her chance. She went on to beat IM Vaishali R and IM Oliwia Kiolbasa (POL). Four GMs - Koneru Humpy, Mariya Muzychuk, Anna Ushenina and Harika Dronavalli are at 2/3 each. GM Anna Muzychuk is still in search for her first victory. Vaishali scored 1.5/3 and Oliwia had a tough start as she lost all three of her games. Round 4 starts tomorrow at 12 p.m. IST. Mohit Kumar Soni clinches 4th CPPA Rating Open 2022

Mohit Kumar Soni of Bihar scored 8.5/10 to win 4th CPPA Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Both Iftikar Alom Mazumdar of Assam and Kishan Kumar of Bihar scored 8/10 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. WCM Bristy Mukherjee was the only player to beat the eventual champion, Mohit, scored 7.5/10 and edged past three more players on tie-breaks to finish fourth. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹250000. The top three prizes were ₹33000, ₹22000 and ₹16000 along with a trophy each. This is Mohit's first-ever Rating tournament triumph of his career. I must say this - GM S L Narayanan

GM S L Narayanan is a very strong player. He has been consistently doing well for over two years. Two days ago, he won the individual Bronze medal for India on Board no.3 at World Team Chess Championship 2022. He made his Chess Olympiad debut earlier this year and won Gaprindashvili Cup. Anyone who knows him can attest to the fact that he is a very soft-spoken, calm, composed person. The 24-year-old does not take rash decisions or show his outrage publicly. On 28th midnight (Indian time) he shared a tweet where he decided not to be silent about feeling humiliated. What happened before the game? AICF bags Best National Sports Federation of the year at FICCI India Sports Awards 2022

On Saturday 26th November 2022, All India Chess Federation (AICF) won National Sports Federation of the Year award by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) at FICCI India Sports Awards 2022 in New Delhi. GM FST R B Ramesh was awarded Sports Coach of the Year - Male. Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) who showed a huge support towards chess, won the Best Educational Institute Promoting Sports award. Tata Steel Chess India is the strongest Rapid and Blitz tournament to take place in India. After the successful completion of 44th Chess Olympiad and Asian Continental Championship, the next big event starts tomorrow at National Library of India in Kolkata. For the first time in the history of the sport, both men and women's section will have equal prize fund of US$ 41500. The five-day Rapid and Blitz tournament will feature 22 of the world's best including India's top players. Annirudhha Potawad scored 7/7 to become the winner of 2nd ChessBase India Club Tournament 2022. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. Jeet Shah and Nitin M Pai scored 6/7 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹10000. The top three prizes were ₹5000, ₹3000 and ₹2000 along with a trophy each. Fourth to eighth won 1-month ChessBase Premium Account subscription and a 10% discount coupon which can be used on ChessBase India shop. Sharan Rao dominates 2nd SCMA Rapid Rating Open 2022

Top seed of the tournament FM Sharan Rao scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 2nd SCMA Rapid Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Kaustuv Kundu and Pranav K P scored 8/9 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. FM Prasanna S, Raam Hemanth and FM Preetham R Sharma scored 8/9 each. Prasanna won the Blitz Open due to better tie-breaks. Raam and Preetham were adjudged second and third. The total prize fund for the Rapid Rating was ₹200000 and ₹40000 for the Blitz Open. Harshavardhan clinches Gold at Asian Junior 2022, Rakshitta Ravi Silver in Girls

IM Harshavardhan G B drew his final round game as it was enough to become Asian Junior 2022 champion. He scored an unbeaten 7/9, finished a half point ahead of the field to clinch the Gold and score a GM-norm. For the second consecutive year, an Indian player has won the Asian Junior title. The reigning National Junior Girls (Under-19) 2022 champion, WIM Rakshitta Ravi bagged a Silver in Classical and Bronze in Blitz event. She scored 7/9 and 6/9 respectively. WFM Bhagyashree Patil won Gold in the Blitz event scoring 7/9. Even a last round loss did not deter her championship hopes. The defending champion, IM Raahul V S made 6/9 to finish sixth. China becomes World Team Champion 2022, S L Narayanan wins Bronze

India drew both Small final duels against Spain 2-2. They lost the tie-breaks 1-3 and Spain won the Bronze medal. Thus, India missed a medal and finished fourth for the third consecutive time. GM S L Narayanan's consistent performance earned him an individual Bronze medal on Board no.3. He performed at 2716. China defeated Uzbekistan 2.5-1.5 in both duels. They won the Gold medal by remaining undefeated throughout the tournament and without needing to play tie-breaks in the knockout stage. Uzbekistan had to settle for Silver. FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships 2022: Registration is open

The FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championship 2022 will take place in Almaty, Kazakhstan from 25th to 31st December at the Baluan Sholak Sports Palace. The arena has hosted many international sports competitions as well as live concerts and various shows. Check out the details to find all info about registration. Total US$ 1 million prize fund will be given to prize winners, $700000 for the Open championships and $300000 in the Blitz championships. Apart from the Rating criteria, GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM Aravindh Chithambaram and WGM Divya Deshmukh are also eligible for Open and Women championships by virtue of winning the National Senior, National Rapid and Blitz and National Women championships earlier this year.
