MPL 59th National Senior R5: Abhijeet Gupta gains sole lead

GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB) defeated IM Koustav Chatterjee (WB) to become sole leader at 5/5. Top four games went in favor of White at MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB), GM Visakh N R (RSPB) and IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) won their respective games against GM Deep Sengupta (PSPB), FM Vedant Panesar (MAH) and IM Nubairshah Shaikh (MAH). They are joined by GM Mitrabha Guha (WB) in the chase at 4.5/5 each. MPL 35th National U-9 Championships Round 2-3: The rise of Sharvaanica

Sharvaanica A S hails from a small town in the Ariyalur District of Tamil Nadu. She is only 7 years old, yet she has made a strong 3/3 start in the 35th MPL National U-9 Championships! In the Open section, the top seed Madhavendra Pratap Sharma (1585, MP) continued his domination by winning Rounds 2 and 3. As many as 15 players have a perfect score so far in the Open section, and 8 players in the girls section. With 8 more rounds to go, this is still anyone's tournament. World Rapid 2022 Day 1: Magnus Carlsen channels the spirit of Bobby Fischer

The World Rapid Championships 2022 kicked off on the 26th of December 2022 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Five rounds were played in the open section and four rounds in women. We have four leaders in the open with 4.5/5 and they are Magnus Carlsen, Arjun Erigaisi, Vladimir Fedoseev and Jorden van Foreest. MPL 48th National Women R1: Dakshita defies Soumya

14-year-old Dakshita Kumawat (RAJ) held the former National Women's champion, IM Soumya Swaminathan (PSPB) to a draw. The teenager played solid out of the Trompowsky opening and did not make any significant mistake throughout the game. The Asian U-12 double Gold medalist, Saparya Ghosh (WB) got herself a good opportunity to split the point with WGM Srija Seshadri (TN) in the final moments of the rook endgame. Unfortunately, she was unable to seize her opportunity. 13-year-old Jagadale Ishwari held her statemate from Maharashtra, WIM Mrudul Dehankar to a draw. MPL 35th National U-9 Championships kick off in Indore

The MPL National U-9 Chess Championship kicked off on Christmas day, 25th December in IPS Academy, Indore! A total of 309 players from all across India are participating in this mega event - 214 players in the Open section, and 105 in the girls category. The Inauguration ceremony took place at 2 PM, and the first round of the tournament started 3:00 PM. Indore's IAS Collector Dr. Iliyaraja T was invited as the Chief guest in the opening ceremony! This will be an 11-round classical event from 25th December to 2nd January. We at ChessBase India will bring you all the action live!

GM Iniyan P (TN) drew with his statemate and top seed GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB) in the fourth round of MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. FM Vedant Panesar (MAH) also shared the point with IM Aronyak Ghosh (WB). GM Abhijeet Gupta (PSPB) defeated the reigning Asian Junior 2022 Open champion, IM Harshavardhan G B (TN) and IM Koustaav Chatterjee (WB) prevailed over IM Nitin S (TN). A glorious opening ceremony in Kazakh style at the World Rapid and Blitz 2022

The World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2022 kick off in Almaty, Kazakhstan on the 26th of December 2022. On 25th of December, one day before the start of the event, there was an opening ceremony held at the venue. The first thing you notice when you enter the premises of the Baluan Sholak Sports Palace is how massive it is and how spacious it is going to be for the players. Vantika Agrawal is the top seed at MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship 2022

MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship starts today at Sanjay Ghodawat University in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. For the first time since 2019, it will be a full-fledged event, which means there will be 11 rounds instead of 9 like the previous edition held earlier this year. The time control is also back to 90 minutes for 40 moves followed by 30 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1. The total prize fund has been increased by ₹500000, each prize got increased by ₹50000. WGM Vantika Agrawal is the top seed of the tournament, The defending champion, WGM Divya Deshmukh is the second seed and former National Women's champion, IM Soumya Swaminathan will be third seed. University of Calcutta reclaims East Zone Inter University Chess Championship 2022 after five years

University of Calcutta Men's team have been making a second place finish for the past three editions from 2018 to 2021. That changed on 10th December. The team finally ended their chase and claimed the first place. Both University of Calcutta and the defending champions, Adamas University scored an unbeaten 11/12. The match between them also ended in a 2-2 draw with four decisive games in the penultimate round. However, the former won became champion due to having more game points than the latter. Subhabrata Roy and IM Utsab Chatterjee won the individual board prizes from the winning team. Three teams scored 9/11. Atal Bihari Vajpayee Vishwavidyalaya was adjudged third according to tie-breaks.

MPL 59th National Senior R3: The Systematic Pawn Structure Fragmentation

IM Nitin S (RSPB) scored the biggest upset of the third round at MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. He defeated GM Leon Luke Mendonca (Goa) by systematically fragmenting his opponent pawn structure in a game arising out of Caro-Kann opening. 52-year-old Laishram Imocha (PSPB) won against GM Deepan Chakkravarthy (RSPB) when the latter overloaded his rook in an already dwindling position. Shreyansh Daklia (CHT) scored an upset victory against 50th National Junior champion, IM Neelash Saha when the latter tried too hard in a drawn endgame. Each year ends for a professional chess player with the world rapid and blitz. The new year is spent on the flight back home! And this year is no different! The World Rapid and Blitz 2022 Championships are going to be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan. We have a total of 180 players in the open section, 100 in women. Out of which we have 22 Indians in all (15 in open and 7 in women). Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura will be the favourites to win the title, but the event will also witness young talents like Arjun Erigaisi and Nihal Sarin. A total of US $1 million at stake. Nodirbek Abdusattorov wins 8th Gashimov Memorial 2022 with five rounds to spare

What is the true sign of a champion? How you get back up from a forgettable event. The reigning World Rapid champion, Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) did just that. After a disappointing performance at the Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Rapid and Blitz, the 18-year-old regrouped himself and delivered a strong performance with an exact same format at the 8th Gashimov Memorial 2022. He scored 25.5/36 and won the tournament with five rounds to spare. That is undoubtedly a remarkable performance and a much needed one for him, just two days before he starts his World title defense. MPL 59th National Senior R2: The Deep Queen sac

19-year-old Akshit Kumar J (AP) scored the first big upset of MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. He defeated GM-elect IM Arghyadip Das who could not find the best way to save his pinned knight. Multi-time Hastings Masters winner and Commonwealth Gold medalist, GM Deep Sengupta (PSPB) sacrificed his queen against the reigning National Under-17 Open champion, CM Mayank Chakraborty (ASM). While Deep did not follow through correctly and finish things off earlier, nevertheless he managed to score the full point. Bharat Kumar Reddy Poluri (TEL), M Anees M (TN), Dhananjay S (CHT), Shreyansh Daklia (CHT), Kartavya Anadkat (GUJ), Grahesh Y (AP), Rupam Mukherjee (WB) and Tapan Badamundi (ODI) held their respective Grandmaster opponents to a draw each. Kirill Alekseenko wins Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022

Kirill Alekseenko drew with Hans Niemann (USA) to win Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the field 8.5/10 and did not require Playoffs. Hans defeated M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) in Armageddon after they traded wins in their Playoff Blitz finals. Thus, Hans finished second and Tabatabaei third. GM Karthikeyan Murali defeated Turkish prodigy 11-year-old IM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus to finish eighth after losing Playoffs against GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR). Karthikeyan became the sole Indian to make a top ten finish. Both Shantanu Bhambure and Ilamparthi A R scored their respective final IM-norms. Shantanu became India's latest International Master. The top seeds avoided any major upset in the first round of MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. For the first time in National, there are 70 live boards. Thus, the propensity to find beautiful game(s) in each round increases by that much. It goes without saying that not only for the viewers, it helps the players also to see the current form in the tournament of their future opponents. Aarav Sinha (DEL) and Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy (UP) held GM Deepan Chakkravarthy (RSPB) and GM Sriram Jha (LIC) to a draw.
