Karthik Venkataraman dominates MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022

GM Karthik Venkataraman drew his final round game against GM Visakh N R to win MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. Karthik scored an unbeaten 10/13 and finished a half point ahead of the field. GM Abhijeet Gupta, Visakh, IM P Shyam Nikhil and IM Sayantan Das scored 9.5/13 each. They were placed second to fifth according to tie-breaks. Karthik became the only player to remain undefeated among the top ten finishers. The 23-year-old from Andhra Pradesh has secured plenty of podium finish throughout 2022, however this was his sole and biggest triumph of the year. The month of December started with Aditya Mittal becoming India's 77th and Mumbai's second Grandmaster. Then we got two more IMs in the form of Jubin Jimmy and Sambit Panda. On 22nd December 2022, we got our third International Master of the month - Shantanu Bhambure. He scored his final IM-norm at 9th Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022. While we see teenagers scoring norms and earning titles, it is not often we get to see an adult scoring norms or achieving titles. The 27-year-old returned to chess after a brief hiatus from the sport in 2017 after becoming a Mechanical Engineer. He scored his first two IM-norms in two months at the end of 2019. MPL 48th National Women R9: Divya increases her sole lead

WGM Divya Deshmukh increased her sole lead by a full point by defeating Sunyuktha C M N. Just like the previous edition, Divya is now full point ahead of the field heading into the penultimate round of MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship 2022. WGM Mary Ann Gomes is the sole player trailing her by a half point at 7/9. She is followed by seven players at 6.5/9 each including the top seed WGM Vantika Agrawal. WGM Srija Seshadri missed a win against WIM Sakshi Chitlange. WIM Isha Sharma held IM Soumya Swaminathan to a draw. She will now face Divya in the penultimate round. Balkishan wins SIMSRH 1st Rapid Rating Open with a perfect score

Balkishan A scored 7/7 to win SIMSRH 1st Rapid Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Sudarshan Bhat made an unbeaten 6.5/7 to finish second. The top seed of the tournament, IM D V Prasad scored 6/7 and edged past eight more players to finish third on tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹15000, ₹10000 and ₹7500 along with a trophy each. A total of 250 players took part from various part of the country. The one-day seven-round Rapid Rating tournament was organized by New Tumkur District Chess Association and MM Chess Development Trust on 3rd December 2022. WGM Divya Deshmukh showcased her endgame prowess against WGM Mary Ann Gomes in the eighth round of MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship 2022. Divya has taken sole lead 7/8. Mary is the sole player in the chase at 6.5/8. She is closely followed by six players at 6/6. They are - WIM Sakshi Chitlange, WGM Vantika Agrawal, Sunyuktha C M N, IM Soumya Swaminathan, WIM Isha Sharma and WGM Srija Seshadri. Untitled Sunyuktha is having a great event. GM Karthik Venkataraman is someone who generally plays the first half of the tournament in an energy saving mode. In the second half, he unleashes his super-strong side where his opponents can only hope to avoid his wrath. After a 4.5/6 start, he scored 5/6 in the last six games, including a hat-trick of wins. He is now the sole leader heading into the final round 9.5/12. He will face GM Visakh N R in the final round. Visakh also had a fantastic 2022 where he won several Open tournaments consecutively in Europe. Samarth J Rao wins 3rd All India Physically Challenged Rating Chess Championship 2022

CM Samarth J Rao and Naveen Kumar A scored 7.5/9 each at 3rd All India Physically Challenged Rating Chess Championship 2022. Samarth remained won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Naveen finished second. The champion from Karnataka also remained undefeated, drew with both eventual runner-ups. Defending chaampion FM Venkata Krishna Karthik scored sole 7/9 to finish third. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. A total of 50 players out of 64 won a prize each.

WGM Mary Ann Gomes defeated IM Soumya Swaminathan to maintain her sole lead 6.5/7 at MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship 2022. Defending champion, WGM Divya Deshmukh won against WIM Aashna Makhija to stay in the hunt 6/7. Mary will face Divya in the eighth round. Three women including the top seed are at 5.5/7 each. They are - WIM Sakshi Chitlange, WGM Vantika Agrawal and WIM Isha Sharma. WGM-elect Sakshi scored quite possibly the best win of the round against IM Bhakti Kulkarni. GM Karthik Venkataraman, IM Aronyak Ghosh and Hari Madhavan N B scored sensational victories to throw the tournament wide open. Karthik defeated GM Abhijeet Gupta in an thrilling encounter. IM Aronyak Ghosh just simply played outstanding chess against GM Sethuraman S P. India's latest International Master, Hari Madhavan N B defeated GM Mitrabha Guha to join the four-way lead with Karthik, Koustav and Aronyak. MPL 35th National U-9 Round 10: Karnataka domination across Open and girls

Both the leaders of the Open section and Girls section kept up their form in the penultimate round of the MPL 35th National Under-9 Championships going on right now at Indore Public School. Pratitee Bordoloi (1201, Karnataka) defeated Aadya Ranganath (1327, Karnataka) in girls, and Aarav Sarbalia (1458, Karnataka) continued his domination with a win over R Nijesh (1365, Tamil Nadu). Both of the leaders are hailing from Karnataka! The final round 11 starts from 2nd January at 9:30 AM IST, and the prize distribution ceremony will take place at afternoon time. Daakshin Arun and Sneha Halder win MPL 35th National Under-13 Open and Girls Chess Championships 2022

CM Daakshin Arun (TN) and Sneha Halder (WB) scored an unbeaten 10/11 and 9.5/11 each respectively to win MPL 35th National Under-15 Open and Girls Chess Championship 2022 respecttively. Both of them finished a full point ahead of the competition. Daakshin did not face the remaining podium finishers. Sneha drew with the runner-up Sachi Jain (DEL) 8.5/11. Daeevik Wadhawan (DEL), Yash Bharadia (RAJ) and Dhruva Thota (TEL) scored 9/11 each. They were placed second, third and fourth; in the Girls, Sachi Jain, Saparya Ghosh (WB), Shreya G Hipparagi (MAH) and Sannidhi Ramakrishna Bhat (MAH) scored 9/11 each. IM Koustav Chatterjee made a great escape against GM Mitrabha Guha in the tenth round of MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. Mitrabha missed a good opportunity to push for a win in the bishop vs knight endgame. IM Srihari L R continues his unbeaten streak as he drew with GM Sethuraman S P. GM Abhijeet Gupta registered his third win in-a-row. This time it was against IM Vignesh N R who tried to do too much after Abhijeet's strategic exchange sacrifice. WGM Mary Ann Gomes halted WIM Aashna Makhija's unbeaten run at MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship 2022. Mary defeated Aashna comfortably as the former showed her endgame knowledge in earning the full point. WGM Divya Deshmukh won a sharp battle against WGM Srija Seshadri who found it quite difficult to defend the complex situation she got herself in. IM Soumya Swaminathan and IM Bhakti Kulkarni scored comfortable victories to join Aashna and Divya at 5/7 each. MPL 35th National U-9 Round 8-9: Pratitee takes sole lead

The 8th and 9th round of the MPL National Under-9 Championships saw a lot of action. The fight for sole lead continued in both the Open and Girls section. While Aarav Sarbalia continues to hold his lead with two consecutive wins in Round 8 and 9, it is not the case in girls. Pratitee Bordoloi has emerged as the new leader, defeating Sharvaanica AS in Round 8 and Shashini Puvi in Round 9.
