World Team 2022 R1-2: India starts with two draws

India drew both of their matches against Israel and Poland on the first day of World Team Chess Championship 2022. In both games, Vidit missed some good winning chances. Sethuraman could not find a slightly difficult to spot winning continuation in the first game and lost the second one. S L Narayanan saved the day for the team as he scored an important and the sole victory of the day for India in the second round. India is currently at third place 2/4 in Group B. MCCT Finals R7: Praggnanandhaa beats Arjun Erigaisi, So finishes second

Praggnanandhaa won against Arjun Erigaisi in the final round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals 2022. Both of them scored 9/21 each to finish fifth and sixth respectively. They also earned US$ 22500 each. The rematch between them will take place starting next week at Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Rapid and Blitz which begins on Tuesday 29th November 2022. Anish Giri defeated Wesley So to finally end his four-match losing streak. Still it did not help his overall standings as So finished second 13/21 and Giri last 6/21. Magnus Carlsen applauds Indian chess talents and fans

Magnus Carlsen is in scintillating form in San Francisco as he not only won the Champions Chess Tour Finals, but the entire 2022 event. In round 6 he played an excellent match against Praggnanandhaa to win 2.5-0.5. After the match ended, we were able to get Magnus on the livestream to discuss some of the critical moments from the match. The world champion also showed us a very interesting position that he had studied at a training camp recently. All of this happened at 4.30 a.m. Indian time! A very special interview that ended with Magnus praising the work that ChessBase India is doing and giving a big shout out to the Indian talents and fans!  

India starts as the top seed in Group B at World Teams 2022 starting today

Three months after winning the Bronze medal at the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022, Indian men's team will start their FIDE World Team Championship campaign on Sunday 20th November at Jerusalem, Israel. The tournament format is same as last year's World Women Team Championship 2021. The top four teams from each group will advance to the Quarterfinals. India finished at fourth place in the previous edition in 2019, they would definitely like to better that finish this time. Commonwealth 2022 R5-6: Mitrabha regains his sole lead

GM Mitrabha Guha regained his sole lead by defeating GM Venkatesh M R in the sixth round of Commonwealth Chess Championships 2022. He moved to 5.5/6. Currently GM Aravindh Chithambaram and IM P Shyam Nikhil are the only two players trailing by a half point at 5/6 each. Both Shyam and Aravindh halted GM-elect IM Pranesh M and CM Gaurang Bagwe's phenomenal run by defeating them respectively. WGM-elect WIM Sakshi Chitlange lost to GM Visakh N R after scoring a win against GM Neelotpal Das in the fourth round. WIM Bhagyashree Thipsay and Sakshi are currently top female scorer at 4/6 each. Magnus Carlsen wins MCCT Finals 2022 with a round to spare

Magnus Carlsen defeated R Praggnanandhhaa 2.5-0.5 to win the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals 2022 with one round to spare. Praggnanandhaa might have lost two games and the matches but he is being forged in the battlefield. This learning experience is certainly helping him to become stronger. He has already shown traits of the world champion in this event and at Asian Continental Championship 2022 too. So one should not take these losses to their hearts because Praggnanandhaa will bounce back stronger and roar louder in the days to come. Arjun Erigaisi made a short work of Liem Quang Le scoring a 2.5-0.5 win. It was once again a minimal day as all four matches needed only three games to produce an outcome. Shinya Kojima wins Japan Open 2022

The last couple of years saw the pandemic take its toll on Over-the-board events. This year has been far better. Travel has again become possible worldwide, with Japan also reopening to tourists from October. Sheldon Donaldson shares his thoughts with us again. Yet, the more things changed, the more they seem to have remained the same. IM Shinya Kojima pulled off yet another win at the Japan Open 2022. He won the previous edition early this year in January. MCCT Finals R5: Praggnanandhaa wins a thriller against Duda

R Praggnanandhaa had his best match of MCCT Finals so far against Jan-Krzysztof Duda. They had six decisive games and White won in them all. They were trading wins and the 17-year-old won a must-win fourth game to force tie-breaks. The teenager started the tie-breaks with a win which put Duda in a must-win situation and he won that. Praggnanandhaa drew the Armageddon with black pieces. Thus, he won the match. Arjun Erigaisi made a short work of Anish Giri in just three games. Former World Blitz champion, Liem Quang Le stretched Magnus Carlsen to his limit and the World no.1 had to win the Armageddon to clinch the match. Carlsen vs Praggnanandhaa and Liem vs Arjun is set for Round 6 which starts tonight, 20th November at 1:30 a.m. IST. Subhayan Kundu dominates 3rd DD-DBCA Rating Open 2022

Top seed of the tournament, Subhayan Kundu scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 3rd DD-DBCA Rating Open 2022. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. Kunal Chatterjee, Anurag Jaiswal and Ritabrata Chakraborty scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second, third and fourth according to tie-breaks. Fifth place finisher Vivek Sharma was the only one to extract a half point from the eventual champion, Subhayan. The total cash prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. Commonwealth 2022 R1-4: Mitrabha outwits Aravindh, gains sole lead

India's 72nd GM Mitrabha Guha scored a big victory over the top seed of the tournament, GM Aravindh Chithambaram. Their rivalry started over nine years ago and so far they have had only one draw in their nine encounters. Mitrabha won an exciting battle to gain sole lead 4/4. GM-elect IM Pranesh M is one of the six players at 3.5/4. He defeated a former Commonwealth Gold medalist, GM Deep Sengupta in the fourth round. The teenager is also leading the Under-14 Open with a perfect 4/4. WGM-elect Sakshi Chitlange and veteran WIM Bhagyashree Thipsay are currently the top female scorers at 3/4 each. MCCT Finals R4: Arjun Erigaisi beats Mamedyarov, ends his win drought

Arjun Erigaisi scored his first point in the fourth round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals. After missing a win in the first game, the teenager ensured that he does not let another opportunity slip by. He won the second one by seizing his material advantage in the endgame. In the third game, he missed a slightly difficult tactic. However, in the fourth game he made a beautiful finish to win the match 1-3 in his favor. Praggnanandhaa drew three games and lost one against So to lose the match 1.5-2.5. He just needed to be unafraid in the third game to avoid a loss. Carlsen and Liem were the other two victors of the round against Giri and Duda respectively. Kaustuv Kundu conquers 3rd TTCA Rating Open 2022

Kaustuv Kundu scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 3rd TTCA Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the field. S Prasanna and Arpan Das made 7.5/9 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks. Kaustuv defeated the eventual runner-up in the seventh round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹360000. The top three prizes were ₹55000, ₹40000 and ₹25000 along with a trophy each. A total of 238 players took part in this event. MCCT Finals R3: Praggnanandhaa squashes Liem 3-0

Praggnanandhaa scored his first match victory in the third round of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals. He defeated the former World Blitz champion, Liem Quang Le in three consecutive games. In all three games, the 17-year-old showed a fantastic positional understanding, punctuated by his sharp tactical awareness. This 3-0 win propelled him to the fourth spot on the points table, sharing the same score 4/9 with Giri and Liem. Arjun Erigaisi's tough form continues as he suffered another loss in just three games. This time against the former World Fischer Random champion, Wesley So. Carlsen defeated Mamedyarov 3-0 and Duda defeated Giri 2.5-0.5. Round 4 pairings are, Praggnanandhaa vs So and Mamedyarov vs Arjun Erigaisi, starting tonight 18th November at 1:30 a.m. IST. 54-year-old P D S Girinath triumphs at 1st BongCloud Rapid Rating Open 2022

Generally, we almost always see a young player creating/breaking new record quite often. It's time to rejoice for adults and veterans as IM P D S Girinath scored eight straight victories at 1st BongCloud Rapid Rating Open 2022. A last round loss did not affect his first place position. Three more players - FM R Ashwath, IM Kushagra Mohan and top seed GM Thej Kumar M S scored 8/9 each. They were placed second to fourth according to tie-breaks. Thej was the only one to beat the eventual champion. Girinath showed that age is just a number. His knowledge, skills and understanding of the game is timeless. The total cash prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹40000, ₹25000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each.
