Harikrishnan clinches 34th KCF Rapid Rating Open 2023

IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win 34th KCF Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Six players - IM FT Muthaiah Al, FM Senthil Maran K, GM Laxman R R, Kunal M, Barath Kalyan M and Sai Vishwesh C scored 7/8 each. They were placed second to seventh respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹15000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each respectively. The one-day Rapid Rating tournament witnessed the participation of 369 players including 2 GMs and 6 IMs. It was organized by King Chess Foundation. FIDE and Chess.com bring Chess to the Olympic Esports Series

For the first time, Blitz chess will be included in the inaugural edition of Olympic Esports Series 2023. The three phase qualifiers will start from April 1st for the non-titled players. The winners will advance to the Trials stage where titled players will enter the competition. The top 16 players will go through to a Preliminaries event which will take place from 1st to 5th May. Eight players will be eliminated and the final eight will progress to a live in-person tournament which will be held during the Olympic Esports Week in Singapore from 22nd to 25th June 2023. 56th Biel Chess Festival 2023: Tournaments for every taste! Registration is now open!

The 56th edition of Biel Chess Festival 2023 is set to start from Saturday 15th July 2023. Apart from the GMT (Grandmaster Triathlon), there will be a ten round MTO (Master Tournament) for players rated 2050+, HTO (Main Tournament) for players rated above 1700, ATO (Amateur Tournament) for players rated below 1900. There are also going to be several other events including Rapid, Blitz and Chess960 events. Indian players did quite well last year in GMT, MTO, Chess960 and ATO. Pranav Anand scored his final GM-norm too, months before becoming World Under-16 Open champion and India's 76th Grandmaster. 32nd PSPB Inter Unit Rapid Team Pool R4-7: Isha Sharma takes down Padmini Rout

WIM Isha Sharma once again proved that she is capable of defeating much stronger players. In the 4th round of Pool 1, Isha Sharma scored a win over one of the most experienced players in Indian women chess, IM Padmini Rout. After 7 rounds of play, the pool stage has ended with ONGC A standing 1st in Pool 2, and IOC A with the top spot in Pool 1. Today is the final day of the Team championships - Semifinals, small finals and finals will take place today. All of the matches today are knockout matches. ChessBase India Chess Club to begin in Indore from 11th of March 2023

On the same day as the ChessBase India Chess Club at Mumbai turns 1 year old, we have the 2nd Chess club opening up - this time in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The club will be completely free and open to all and will take place every Saturday. This will happen inside the premises of the Phoenix Citadel Mall, one of the most prominent malls in the city. The inauguration of the Chess Club will be done on 11th of March 2023 by the head of ChessBase India Hindi Niklesh Jain along with the first IM from Madhya Pradesh Akshat Khamparia. We also have an inaugural blitz tournament planned where there are lot of exciting vouchers and prizes to be won! 32nd PSPB Inter Unit Rapid Team Pool R1-3: V S Raahul stuns Praggnanandhaa in 26 moves

19-year-old IM Raahul V S (ONGC B) scored a huge victory over GM R Praggnanandhaa (IOC A) in the third round. Raahul's team ONGC B lost to IOC A by a 1-3 score, however, this individual victory is certainly going to give him a boost in confidence. The 32nd Inter Unit PSPB Rapid Team Chess Championship 2023 is a non-rated event. India's top players take part in it. The event is a good opportunity for the youngsters to face some of the best the country has to offer, score some upset victories and who knows which company/sponsor might get impressed by their performance and possibly help them in their future. ChessBase India Chess Club completes 1 year, Rs.1,25,000 mega tournament on 11th of March 2023

ChessBase India Chess Club at the Phoenix Marketcity Mumbai will complete 52 Saturdays - 1 full year of existence on 11th of March 2023. In order to celebrate the occasion we are organizing a rapid tournament (10 mins + 2 seconds increment) of nine rounds. The total prize fund is Rs.1,25,000 and the winner takes home Rs.25,000. The entry fee is just Rs.100 and only Rs.50 for women. This event has been supported by Samay Raina with half of the main prize fund and the entire women's prize fund is sponsored by Phoenix Marketcity. There is only space for 200 players to join in, so make sure that you register soon and be a part of this wonderful event. 9-year-old Madhvendra Pratap Sharma wins Khelo Chess India Blitz 2023 with a perfect 7/7

ChessBase India is organizing tournaments continuously as part of 'Khelo Chess India' at Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. The reigning MPL 35th National Under-9 Open champion, Madhvendra Pratap Sharma won the Blitz tournament with a 100% score of 7/7. Currently, Bhopal's top player, Aishwin Daniel scored 5.5/7 to finish second. His sole loss was against the eventual champion, Madhvendra in the fourth round. Vedant Bharadwaj scored sole 5/7 to finish third. The next event of Khelo Chess India will be a Rapid tournament on Sunday 19th March 2023. Check out the article for more details.

John Paul Wallace wins 6th Kragero Resort Open 2023, Leon third

IM John Paul Wallace (AUS) headed into the final round of 6th Kragero Resort Open 2023 with a full point lead 7/8. Despite losing the final round game to GM Titas Stremavicius (LTU), John still managed to finish first on tie-breaks, Titas was placed second. Seven players - GM Leon Luke Mendonca, GM Kaido Kulaots (EST), GM Lucas van Foreest (NED), GM Visakh N R, GM Valery Kazakouski (LTU), IM Elham Abdulrauf (NOR) and FM Saad Abobaker Elmi (NOR) finished with 6.5/9. ChessBase India launches its first physical academy in Bhopal

Until now ChessBase India has majorly done its training online. We have been doing it via our YouTube channels, website, social media and also the ChessRanga training platform that we are building. March 2023 becomes the month when we launch our first ever physical academy. And we have begun with Bhopal. Why did we select this city? The main reason is that Niklesh Jain and his better half Angela Franco live in the city and are working hard to strengthen the chess culture of the city with tournaments, activities in schools and much more. Building a physical academy where we will have our regular camps is a step in the direction of imparting high quality chess training at affordable costs, not just for the people of Bhopal, but all across India. Shaastra IIT Madras invites you to participate in 5th Shaastra Rapid Rating Open 2023

Shaastra IIT Madras invites all chess players around the world in the fifth edition of Shaastra Rapid Rating Open 2023. It is scheduled to take place on 11th and 12th March 2023. This the only IIT which organizes an Open Rapid Rating event every year. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, the tournament could not take place in the last two years. This year the total prize fund is ₹500000, a huge increase of 66.67% worth ₹200000 since the previous edition held in 2020. So far five GMs, six IMs, a WGM and two WIMs have already confirmed their participation. The total number of players increase every year by a lot. Last edition had a total 440 players. Pravaha Foundation announces Rs.2 crore sponsorship for women in Indian chess

Recently we published an article where we spoke about how MGD1, a chess first e-sports company, had secured Rs.12.4 crore sponsorship for GM Arjun Erigaisi with Quantbox over a period of 5 years. Now MGD1 once again has contributed massively towards Indian chess, this time with the Pravaha Foundation, to power women's chess in the country. The sponsorship program has a budget of Rs.2 crore for 2 years and a major chunk of it goes to two of India's finest talents - Savitha Shri and Vantika Agrawal. A portion of this amount also goes towards four young talents - three of them are talented girls - Charvi, Shubhi Gupta, Saparya Ghosh and one of them is a talented boy - Ilamparthi AR. A cakewalk for Phani Kanuri of AP at 1st Tirupattur Rapid Rating Open 2023

46-year-old Phani Kanuri scored 7.5/8 to win 1st Tirupattur Rapid Rating Open 2023. The 11th seeded 1464 rated scored seven straight wins before splitting the point in the final round to become a clear champion. Five players scored 7/9. Out of them Vigneshwaran S and the top seed of the tournament Phoobalan P were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. The top three finishers remained undefeated. This is Phani's first tournament victory since April 2018. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹15000, ₹13000 and ₹11000 along with a trophy each. ONGC Sports Scholarship Scheme 2023-24

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has announced their sports scholarship scheme. The scholarship is valid for any chess player between the age of 10 and 25 years. A total of six scholarships will be granted based on merit to both men and women in three different categories. Economically Weaker Section will be given a preference. Applications will only be accepted via online methods. Praggnanandhaa teams up with Carlsen for the first time for Offerspill and wins Norwegian Elite League 2022-23

R Praggnanandhaa battled against Magnus Carlsen plenty of times in Champions Chess Tour. The two faced each other in consecutive Tata Steel Chess Masters in 2022 and 2023. However, the one thing the teenager had not done before was to team up with the five-time world champion. In a statistical sense, the significance of online events might decay in value over time as they are not rated events, one thing which will stand the test of time is, they both teaming up for the first time for Offerspill team and winning the Norwegian League for the first time in the club's history.
