HelpChess Foundation supports Indian chess players to the tune of Rs.26 lakh in 2022-23

In the year 2022-23, HelpChess Foundation worked around the clock to support Indian chess players. We supported close to 20 players from all across the country and helped them in various ways - tournament expenses, laptops, coaching fees etc. The total amount spent was Rs.25,97,626 (US$31,705). In this article we give a detailed breakdown of all the initiatives, scholarships, sponsorships that were undertaken by HelpChess. At the same time, we have a fund of close to Rs.15 lakh with which we would like to support talents in the year 2023-24. If you are a serious chess player, who is lacking funds, you can fill Google Form given in the article.

2nd Chessable Sunway Formentera R6: Aryan Chopra regains sole lead

Aryan Chopra defeated Raja Rithvik R to regain his sole lead. Aravindh Chithambaram and Pranav Venkatesh drew with Vladimir Fedoseev and Karthik Venkataraman respectively. IM Prraneeth Vuppala scored an impressive win over the World Under-16 champion, GM Pranav Anand. IM Vaishali drew with GM Xu Yi (CHN). Aravindh, Fedoseev and Pranav V are in pursuit at 4.5/6 each. Karthik finished third in the second Blitz event on 23rd April, scoring 7/9. Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR) and Daniel Dardha (BEL) scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed first and second respectively. World Championship Game 11: Quick Draw in 100 minutes

The eleventh game of FIDE World Championship Match 2023 was the shortest game in terms of duration. It lasted a little less than 100 minutes before it ended in a draw. Ian Nepomniachtchi opted for 8.a3 in the Ruy Lopez. It did not give Ding Liren a good feeling about the game as he recollected a memory of his tough loss at the FIDE Candidates 2020. Nevertheless, he mentioned that he did better this time. The score is now 6-5 in favor of the World no.2. Ding Liren reminded everyone that there are three games left and he has two whites. He finished the Candidates 2022 with a win which played a key role in him playing this match. Will he be able to bounce back? Today is a rest day. Satty Zhuldyz Rapid and Blitz 2023: Arjun Ergaisi increases his sole lead

Arjun Erigaisi did not have the best start in the Blitz event of Satty Zhuldyz 2023. He scored only 2/5 in the first five games, winning only two and losing three. The India no.1 in Blitz recovered scoring 5/6 to finish the first day of Blitz with a 7/11 score. He missed a few wins and then won some games which could have gone either way. The most impressive performance of the day was by the World Blitz 2022 Bronze medalist, Haik Martirosyan. The Armenian scored an unbeaten 9/11. He set the tone of the day by winning against Arjun in the very first round of the day. Arjun is currently leading the tournament 16.5/20, followed by Levon Aronian 14.5/20 and then Haik 13.5/20. Bharath Subramaniyam H triumphs at 4th ICA Rapid Rating Open 2023

GM Bharath Subramaniyam H, Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi, GM Arjun Kalyan and CM Gireman Ja scored 8/9 each at 4th ICA Rapid Rating Open 2023. Bharath won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Aakash, Arjun and Gireman were placed second, third and fourth respectively. Only Arjun remained undefeated among them. Bharath defeated the runner-up, Aakash in Round 5. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹51000, ₹41000 and ₹31000 each respectively. Before this Bharath had two consecutive podium finishes at CCS Chess Festival. This is his first tournament triumph since he won a one-day rapid rating tournament back in August 2022. Rayna Ajay Patel wins Bronze at World School Under-7 Girls Championship 2023

Rayna Ajay Patel scored 7/9 to secure the Bronze medal for India at the World School Under-7 Girls Chess Championship 2023. She suffered only two losses. They were against the Gold and Silver medal winners - Tsogtgerel Gerelt-Oyu (MGL) and Reana Kinzyabulatova respectively. Out of the eight participating Indians, Rayna became the sole Indian to clinch a medal at this event. She won the Ahmedabad District and Gujarat State Under-7 Girls Championship a month before. This was her 24th tournament since May 2022. All three podium finishers won their respective final round game. Thus the standings remained unchanged since the penultimate round of the event. World Championship Game 10: The Pray or the Prey?

The tenth game of the FIDE World Championship 2023 ended in a draw. Only four games left to decide the new world champion. Ding Liren does not have a lot of games left to fight back. While he chose the English opening, the World no.2 was able to pull the element of surprise card. The extra pawn did not mean much for the Chinese as his pawn structure was bad. It was not possible to extract anything to get even remotely close to delivering the equalizer. Team Liren must dig deep and find something to keep this match going. IM Nitish Belurkar wins the 1st Indore International GM Open

An exciting final round decided the winner of the 1st Indore International GM Open 2023! In the 10th round, IM Nitish Belurkar continued his fantastic form and defeated FM Harsh Suresh in the first board. The battle between IM Viani Antonio Dcunha and IM Ameya Audi in the 2nd board was a messy one, but Viani was the one who managed to come out on top. Both Viani and Nitish finished with 8.5/10, but Nitish became the champion due to better tiebreaks! Viani stood 2nd, and the experienced Polish Grandmaster Michal Krasenkow finished 3rd. Iftikar Alom Mazumdar dominates 1st Meghalaya Invitation Rating Tournament 2023

Sixth seeded Iftikar Alom Mazumdar scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 1st Meghalaya Invitation Rating Tournament 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Top seed of the event, Soram Rahul Singh scored sole 8/9 to finish third. He remained a full point ahead of the second runner-up. Meghalaya's very own, Silkam Sangma edged past Talin Nimpu to finish third on tie-breaks. They both scored 7/9 each. Soram's both draws were against the remaining podium finishers. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹150000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹17000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each respectively. 2nd Chessable Sunway Formentera R5: Raja Rithvik and Pranav Venkatesh make it a five-way lead

GM Aravindh Chithambaram had a well contested draw against GM Aryan Chopra. GMs Vladimir Fedossev, Raja Rithvik R and Pranav Venkatesh won their respective games to join the previous day leaders at 4/5 each. Raja Rithvik scored a very nice victory over GM Fernando Peralta (ARG). He created his advantage in a balanced major piece endgame and converted it into a full point. Pranav Venkatesh scored his fourth win in-a-row and ended his opponent FM Ritvik Krishnan's unbeaten run. The latter had an advantage, however it was not easy to maintain it and Pranav eventually seized his advantage. Today is a rest day. Satty Zhuldyz 2023: Arjun Erigaisi Roars in Rapid, now World no.24

Arjun Erigaisi won his first game for the third consecutive day. He won against the 14th world champion, Vladimir Kramnik. Then he drew against Levon Aronian, before finishing the Rapid event with a victory over, Kateryna Lagno. Although a draw would have sufficed for a first place finish in the Rapid, Arjun still went for the full point. Arjun won the Rapid event 9.5/11. Aronian finished second 8/11, followed by Alexader Grischuk at 7/11. The tournament is not over, as the final standings will be decided based on a cumulative score of Rapid and Blitz events. 22 games of Blitz will be played in a Double Round-Robin format. 2nd Chessable Sunway Formentera R4: A beautiful day to Sac the Queen

GM Aravindh Chithambaram scored a beautiful victory by offering his queen as a sacrifice. The win allowed him to join the lead with GM Aryan Chopra 3.5/4 at 2nd Chessable Sunway Formentera Open 2023. The reigning National Senior champion, GM Karthik Venkataraman had a couple of good chances against GM Vladimir Fedoseev before he managed to escape with a draw. Speaking of chances, FM Ritvik Krishnan and IM Aditya S Samant missed some great opportunities to beat GM Fernando Peralta (ARG) and GM Leon Luke Mendonca, both drew their games and are now at 3/4 and 2.5/4 each respectively. World Championship Game 9: The longest game so far

Ding Liren endured the longest game of the World Championship 2023 match. He is still a full point behind 4-5 against Ian Nepomniachtchi. Yet, the World no.3 oozes confidence. He answers, My self-confidence has to be based on something, chances of winning the match or the next game - in reply to a question, to rate his self-confidence between 1 and 10. Sure, Nepo has been at this stage once before. He is well-versed with off-the-board, verbal jousting. The World no.2 tried to push for a win and extend his lead but his well composed opponent did not budge. Satty Zhuldyz Rapid R5-8: Arjun Erigaisi is on a roll, now World no.25

Arjun Erigaisi continues his momentum from the previous day at Satty Zhuldyz Rapid and Blitz 2023. He started the day with a convincing victory over GM Jakhongir Vakhidov (UZB). Then he showcased positional prowess against the reigning two-time World Blitz Women's champion, IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ). The teenager registered his third victory of the day against the legend, GM Boris Gelfand (ISR), who ran out of time in an equal knight endgame. Arjun finished the day with a draw against the Germany no.1 GM Vincent Keymer. He is now a full point ahead of Levon Aronian at 7/8. They will meet each other in the penultimate round. 2nd Chessable Sunway Formentera R3: Aryan Chopra emerges sole leader

GM Aryan Chopra scored his third consecutive victory to become the sole leader at 2nd Chessable Sunway Formentera Open 2023. He defeated GM Daniel Alsina Leal (ESP) convincingly. First he transferred his king from kingside to the queenside, before liquidating into a winning a rook endgame. FM Ritvik Krishnan scored an excellent win against GM Hipolito Asis Gargatagli (ESP). The GM could not manage to gain enough compensation for the sacrificed knight against the teenager.
