Baku Open 2023 R7: Hans Niemann escapes jaws of defeat against Aditya Samant

IM Prraneeth Vuppala lost against GM Tornike Sanikidze (GEO) in the seventh round of Baku Open 2023. Prraneeth had a better position at one point. A few inaccurate decisions eventually cost him the game. GM Leon Luke Mendonca made a quick 12-move draw against GM Rauf Mamedov (AZE). Thus, Tornike is now the sole leader 6/7, followed by Leon and GM Mahammad Muradli (AZE) at 5.5/7 each. IM Aditya S Samant was a few moves from winning the game against GM Hans Niemann (USA). However, he missed his opportunity and the American escaped with a draw. In a battle of Asian Continental medalists, WGM Divya Deshmukh made a great save from a lost position against GM Harsha Bharathakoti. Peter Svidler wins 28th Tepe Sigeman & Co 2023, Gukesh shares second place

Boris Gelfand scored the sole victory in the final round of 28th TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2023. The win did not come easy. The legend started with three losses and then made three draws. The multi-stage endgame seemed to be heading towards a draw. His opponent, world's youngest GM Abhimanyu Mishra was unbeaten at 4/6. A draw would have allowed the boy to play tie-breaks against Peter Svidler. However, he crumbled in the final moments and Gelfand won. It means Peter Svidler won the tournament in his first appearance at this event. In the final round, he drew against D Gukesh who is now at the top of the FIDE Circuit leaderboard having 43.12 points. Gukesh shared second place with Nils Grandelius and Abhimanyu scoring 4/7 each. A two-day chess pilgrimage to Chennai

As soon as the World Championship Match ended on the 30th of April 2023, IM Sagar Shah decided to visit the Chess capital of India - the city of Chennai. In the plan was to interview the five-time World Champion and the legendary Vishy Anand on the Ding vs Nepo World Championship Match. But apart from this nothing really was planned. However, things unfolded beautifully as Sagar met IM Saravanan, GM Vishnu Prasanna, WIM Raghavi, GM Shyam Sundar, IM Ilamparthi, IM Jubin Jimmy and GM Pranav V. Sagar describes these two days as a chess pilgrimage. Learn Chess at the Big Chess Summer Camp in Mumbai

This summer ChessBase India is organizing "The Big Chess Summer Camp" at the Phoenix Marketcity mall in Kurla, Mumbai. The aim of the camp is to teach the basics of chess in a way that someone who doesn't know the rules would end the camp being able to play a good game of chess. The camp is held from 16th to 25th of May 2023 and is open to all. GM Leon Luke Mendonca drew against GM Tornike Sanikidze (GEO) in the sixth round of Baku Open 2023. IM Prraneeth Vuppala got the better of Georgia no.2 GM Levan Pantsulaia with precise play. Prraneeth joind Leon and Tornike in a three-way lead 5/6. His live rating is now 2496.8. He already has all three norms, which means he is now just 3.2 Elo rating points away from becoming India's 82nd GM. GM Aditya Mittal and GM Raja Rithvik R drew against GM Eltaj Safarli (AZE) and GM Alexandr Predke (SRB) respectively. WGM Divya Deshmukh beat her second consecutive GM, Bharath Subramaniyam H. All four games in the penultimate round of 28th TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2023 ended in draws. D Gukesh tried his very best until the very end against the legendary, Boris Gelfand. However, the rook and opposite color bishop endgame did not offer much for the teenager to push further for a win. World's youngest GM Abhimanyu Mishra continues his dream run. He drew against Arjun Erigaisi quite comfortably by ensuring none of his attacks on his kingside bear any fruit. Who will win this event - Abhimanyu, Peter Svidler or someone else? If two or more players end up having the same score, tie-break games will be played. In that case, prizes will be shared irrespective of the outcome. Superbet Classic 2023 R4: Caruana emerges sole leader

Fabiano Caruana scored his second consecutive victory at Superbet Chess Classic 2023. In a battle of the former world championship challengers, Caruana outplayed Nepomniachtchi in the queen and minor piece endgame. Caruana showcased his prowess in the endgame. World no.4 Alireza Firouzja scored the only other victory of the round. He defeated the Romania no.2 Bogdan-Daniel Deac. Baku Open 2023 R5: Leon bests top seed Hans Niemann

GM Leon Luke Mendonca continues to lead at Baku Open 2023. He defeated the top seed GM Hans Niemann (USA) to become one of the two leaders with 4.5/5. GM Tornike Sanikidze (GEO) is the other leader. They will inevitably clash in the sixth round. Leon made the most out of his consecutive white pieces. Hans made an incorrect positional decision in an almost equal position and lost control of the game. GM Aditya Mittal defeated the strong GM Anton Korobov (UKR) after the latter blundered in a position which could have been winning for him, had he spotted the correct continuation. The highly anticipated rematch between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren ended in a draw. Despite, mixing up the moves, the new world champion managed to save the day and salvage a draw. Fabiano Caruana scored the sole win of the round against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. The former world blitz champion, seemed to have self-destructed in the game as he made questionable choices one after the other, until his queen got trapped. He decided to resign only after 23 moves. GM Leon Luke Mendonca defeated GM Ulvi Sadikhov (AZE) to join the leaders after Round 4 of Baku Open 2023. Leon gained a significant positional advantage by move 20. A few inaccuracies allowed the teenager to create a passed pawn on the b-file using tactics. It played a crucial role in earning him the full point. IM Prraneeth Vuppala drew with GM Misratdin Iskandaraov (AZE). A total of 20 players are trailing the leaders by a half point at 3/4 each. Six Indians are there among them. Arjun Erigaisi bounced back from his consecutive losses by defeating D Gukesh in the fourth round of 28th TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2023. Arjun has never lost a Classical rated game against Gukesh. That fact did not change yesterday. After an inaccurate exchange in the center, Gukesh missed a tactical opportunity to fight back and try to salvage a half point. Arjun capitalized on his second chance and scored his second win of the event. The remaining three games of the round ended in draws. Superbet Classic 2023 R2: Rapport and Nepo score

Richard Rapport and Ian Nepomniachtchi scored the wins in the second round of Superbet Chess Classic 2023. Rapport had an opposite color bishop endgame against Jan-Krzysztof Duda. It should have ended in a draw with correct play. However, Duda blundered and his opponent seized the opportunity. Nepomniachtchi defeated the Romania no.2 and the lowest player in the fray, Bogdan-Daniel Deac. The former world championship challenger seized his opportunity when his opponent made a mistake in the endgame. Two out of three draws ended in 22 moves or less. The Old Boys' Chess Association of Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda invites you to 10th Dhamso International Chess Festival 2023. The festival includes Classical and Blitz rating tournaments along with various side events for parents, coaches and accompanying persons. The total prize fund of the festival is LKR 1.4 Million. The top three prizes in the Classical event are LKR 150000 + trophy, 100000 and 70000 along with a medal each respectively. Last date of registration is 18th May. Entry is free for the following titled players - GM, IM, WGM, WIM, FM and WFM, and also players rated above 2000.
