GM Arjun Erigaisi scored his second win at FIDE Grand Swiss 2023. He got the better of Spain no.3 GM David Anton Guijarro (ESP). The 20-year-old is now World no.27 in live ratings and one of the seven players at 2/2. He will face GM Alexey Sarana (SRB) in Round 3. GM S L Narayanan continues his good form as he had a hard-fought draw against the 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalist, GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB). GM Aravindh Chithambaram drew against GM Samuel Sevian (USA). GM Raunak Sadhwani continues his great form as he drew against the World no.4 GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA). Raunak will go against GM R Praggnanandhaa in the third round. IM Vaishali R and GM Harika Dronavalli showed their grit against IM Eline Roebers (NED) and GM Thanh Trang Hoang (HUN) respectively. Arvinder Preet Singh wins 8th N L Pandiyar Memorial Rating Open 2023

FM Arvinder Preet Singh, Kartik Kumar Singh, Prithvi Sharma and GM Swapnil Dhopade scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at 8th N L Pandiyar Memorial Rating Open 2023. Arvinder won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Kartik was placed second and Swapnil third. 120th seeded Prithvi won the first prize in rating category 1300-1599. Arvinder drew against Kartik in the final round. Swapnil and Prithvi won against Santhosh Kumar Sinha and Sham R respectively in the final round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹1501000. The top three prizes were ₹111000, ₹71000 and ₹71000 along with a trophy each. A total of 159 prizes were up for grabs. There were three prizes worth ₹1 lac and more. The newly crowned FIDE World Junior Rapid 2023 Open champion, GM Raunak Sadhwani held the World no.7, GM Anish Giri (NED) to a solid draw. GM Aryan Chopra also drew his game against GM R Praggnanandhaa in the first round of FIDE Grand Swiss 2023. GM Leon Luke Mendonca held Netherlands no.2 GM Jorden van Foreest to a draw. GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM S L Narayanan and GM Aravindh Chithambaram made a winning start in the Open section. In the Women's event, IM Tania Sachdev drew against GM Harika Dronavalli. IM Vaishali R and IM Divya Deshmukh defeated IM Oliwia Kiolbasa (POL) and WIM Trisha Kanyamarala (IRL) respectively. Swapnil Dhopade wins 1st Matrix Cup Rating Open 2023

GM Swapnil Dhopade and Harshit Pawar scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 each at 1st Matrix Cup Rating Open 2023. Swapnil won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Harshit secured second place. FM Arvinder Preet Singh and Ram Prakash scored 8/9 each. They were placed third and fourth respectively. They also remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹551000. The top three prizes were ₹70000, 50000 and 30000 along with a trophy each respectively. WFM Supreetha Potluri became the sole woman to make a top ten finish. 20 Indians are set for FIDE Grand Swiss 2023 starting today

20 Indians will be seen in action at FIDE Grand Swiss and Women's Grand Swiss 2023, starting in Douglas, Isle of Man today. Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, Harikrishna, Vidit, Arjun Erigaisi, Nihal, S L Narayanan, Aravindh, Raunak, Aryan Chopra, Leon, Karthikeyan and Abhijeet will play in the Open section. Harika, Vaishali, Vantika, Divya, Tania and Savitha will battle in the Women's event. 106 GMs and 7 IMs from 36 countries with an average rating 2636 are taking part in the Open. The Women's event witnesses 16 GMs, 23 IMs, 5 WGMs and 5 WIMs from 29 countries across the world with an average rating of 2402 should give you an idea about the strength of the event. Chairman of ISRO S. Somanath visits Praggnanandhaa's home in Chennai

Two prides of our country - 17-year-old Praggnanandhaa and 60-year-old S.Somanath, the chairman of ISRO met each other on 16th of October 2023. This meet took place at Pragg's residence in Chennai. Somanath was keen to know more about Pragg's journey and also mentioned that Pragg would work together with ISRO to promote space, sciene and technology to the youngsters of our nation. What did Pragg feel about the entire episode, we get to know more about it in this article.

Important changes to the 2024 Women's Grand Prix series

FIDE Women's Grand Prix is an extremely important series of tournaments for the Women's World Championship cycle. The top two of finishers of the entire GP qualifies to the Candidates. During the New Delhi GP, a letter by the FIDE President was published where it was mentioned what steps FIDE will take about the Women's GP. In the 2024-25 GP series, four major changes were made. They are - increased number of tournaments - from four to six, higher prize fund, increased number of participants and an updated qualification process. The overall prize fund increased by 50%, from €80000 to €120000. Winner of the GP will earn €30000, €10000 more than the previous edition which is again up by 50%. The winner of each event will earn €18000 which was earlier €15000, an increase of 20%. Six out of the 20 GP participants will be decided by the local host (organizers). Photos: FIDE

Karen H Grigoryan wins 5th Yerevan Open 2023, Adhiban second and Abhimanyu Puranik third

GM Karen H Grigoryan (ARM) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 5th Yerevan Open A (≥2100) 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. GM Adhiban B, GM Abhimanyu Puranik and GM Sergei Lobanov scored 7/9 each. They were placed second, third and fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. Both Karen and Adhiban remained undefeated. The total prize fund of all three tournaments was 15000000 AMD. The top three prizes in Open A were AMD 2600000 + trophy, 1800000 and 1350000 each. There were Chessify prizes (Chessify coins) also worth US$ 3000. The top three prizes were $500, $400 and $300. That's not all. There were 20 Chessmood prizes. Rustum Tolentino dominates Qatar Masters Open B 2023, Shrayan Majumder second

FM Rustum Tolentino (PHI) scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Qatar Masters Open B 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. Shrayan Majumder scored 7.5/9 to finish second. FM Ammar Sedrani (UAE), FM Djabri Massinas (ALG) and Mandar Lad Pradip scored 7/9 each. They shared third place. Rustum scored eight wins in-a-row and he had a full point lead heading into the final round. Shrayan Majumder was the sole player at 7/8. Their final round battle ended in a draw. Harshad wins 1st Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit 2023, Srihari L second

FM Harshad S, Srihari L and IM David Gochelashvili scored 6/9 each at 1st Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2023. Harshad won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Srihari and Gochelashvili were placed second and third respectively. Despite starting with a loss and scoring only 2/4 in the first four games, Harshad regrouped quite well by scoring 4/5 in the last five games. The total prize fund of the tournament was US$ 1000. The first prize was $500. This is Harshad's third overall and second individual rating tournament triumph of the year. Harshad won a Rapid Rating and a Blitz Team event this year. FM J Ramakrishna and FM Nikhil Dixit scored 8/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Himal defeated the eventual runner-up Ramakrishna in the penultimate round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. Piotr Sabuk clinches Nagoya Open 2023

Nodirbek Yakubboev wins Qatar Masters 2023, S L Narayanan third with a 2792 performance

The 44th Chess Olympiad Gold medalists - Nodirbek Abdussatorov (UZB) and Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB) won their final round games against Arjun Erigaisi and Karthikeyan Murali respectively. Thus, they both became the only two players to end up with a score of 7/9 each. Yakubboev beat his countryman Abdusattorov in both 5'+3" Blitz play-off games to become Qatar Masters 2023 champion. Abdusattorov was placed second. S L Narayanan had a good chance against Hikaru Nakamura (USA). However, he was unable to seize it and it ended in a draw. Nevertheless, Narayanan scored an unbeaten 6.5/9 with a performance of 2792. He finished third along with five more players including Arjun Erigaisi and D Gukesh. Abhimanyu Puranik was on the verge of handing Magnus Carlsen his third defeat of the tournament. IM Vaishali R and IM Srihari L R scored GM-norms. CM Mayank Chakraborty earned his final IM-norm.
