FIDE receives 3 bids for the World Championship Match 2024 between Gukesh and Ding Liren

The World Chess Body, FIDE, has received three bids of US$8.5 million for the World Championship Match 2024 between Gukesh and Ding Liren. The bids are 2 from India (Chennai and Delhi) and one from Singapore. We speak to FIDE's CEO Emil Sutovsky about this development and he sheds more light on this. With Gukesh being the youngest ever World Championship contender, there is a lot of interest in the match. The entire chess world is on the edge of their seats to know where the match is going to.

4th Cairns Cup R1: Harika does a 126-move marathon draw against Nana Dzagnidze

GM Harika Dronavalli played a 126-move marathon draw against GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO) in the first round of 4th Cairns Cup 2024. She had to sacrifice her bishop in the rook and opposite color bishop endgame to prevent the passed pawn from getting promoted. The India no.2 woman displayed fine technique to survive for 50 moves before the game ending in a draw against the Georgia no.1 woman. GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) made a beautiful double exchange sacrifice to beat the defending champion, IM Anna Zatonskih (USA). 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial R4: Arjun Erigaisi stays on top, Haik bounces back

Arjun Erigaisi drew his fourth round game against the defending champion - Samuel Sevian (USA) at 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024. Haik Martirosyan won the All-Armenian clash against Manuel Petrosyan. The latter made an incorrect decision in the seemingly balanced rook and knight endgame. It allowed Haik to liquidate into a favorable rook and few pawns endgame. He had no trouble converting his extra pawn advantage. M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) scored the only other victory of the round against Matthias Bluebaum (GER). Arjun's next opponent will be Haik who had the maximum decisive games of the event so far. Divya Deshmukh and Kazybek Nogerbek are the FIDE World Junior 2024 Girls and Open Champions

IM Divya Deshmukh defeated WGM Beloslava Krasteva (BUL) to clinch Gold at FIDE World Junior 2024 Girls convincingly. She scored an unbeaten 10/11 and finished a half point ahead of the others. She was the top seed and the favorite to win the tournament, the reigning Asian Continental Women's champion achieved it without any trouble. Second seeded, WIM Mariam Mkrtchyan (ARM) kept her pursuit till the very end. She scored 9.5/11 to secure the Silver. WIM Ayan Allahverdiyeva (AZE) scored 8.5/11 to win the Bronze. In the Open event, GM Kazybek Nogerbek (KAZ) scored a big win in the final round over the sole leader GM Mamikon Gharibyan (ARM) to earn the Gold 8.5/11. GM Emin Ohanyan (ARM) also scored the same. 26th Asian Youth R2: Swayham P Das upsets Harsh Suresh

In the first round, Under-18 Open top seed - IM Aldiyar Ansat (KAZ) suffered a shocking defeat against Khisigbat Ulziikhishig (MGL) at 26th Asian Youth Under-18 Open 2024. In the second round, Under-8 Open, Under- 10 Girls top seeds - Sarbartho Mani and WCM Alanna Berikkyzy (KAZ) suffered a loss each against Kavish Palaniappan K and Zhansaya Sholpanbek (KAZ) respectively. Swayham P Das scored the biggest upset of the round as he defeated IM Harsh Suresh in Under-18 Open. He will face another compatriot Ajay Santhosh Parvathreddy in the third round. This will be his third consecutive opponent from the same country out of the five taking part in his age group. Tomorrow is the sole double round of the tournament. Arjun Erigaisi drew against M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) in the third round of 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024. The defending champion, Samuel Sevian (USA) scored the sole victory of the round against the Armenia no.1 - Haik Martiosyan. Sevian's beautiful creative attack on Haik's kingside made things increasingly difficult for him. It was not easy for him to find a computer-like defense and eventually he succumbed. Divya Deshmukh on the verge of winning World Junior 2024 Girls

IM Divya Deshmukh defeated WFM Sachi Jain comfortably in the penultimate round of FIDE World Junior 2024 Girls. Divya got a dominating position in less than 20 moves. She converted it for a full point in the next few moves. WIM Mariam Mkrtchyan (ARM) scored another win to stay in the Gold rush. She has virtually secured a Silver as she is just a half point behind Divya at 8.5/10 and a full point ahead of the rest. WGM Rakshitta Ravi and WIM Ayan Allahverdiyeva (AZE) are at 7.5/10 each. WGM Beloslava Krasteva (BUL) will be Divya's final challenge to win the tournament. Mariam will be up against Rakshitta. 23 out of 35 Indians have scored a full point in the first round of 26th Asian Youth Chess Championships 2024. Two out of three Gold medal winners - Narayani Umesh Marathe and Pratitee Bordoloi have won their respective games. Saathvik Chakravarthy Ramayanam drew against sixth seeded - Adinur Adilbek in Under-8 Open. Unrated Nakshatra Gumudavelly drew with Alisha Bissaliyeva (KAZ). 14-year-old Aakash G clinches 74th Tamil Nadu State Open Rating 2024 convincingly

Top seed of the tournament, Aakash G scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win 74th Tamil Nadu State Open Rating 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Nine players scored 7.5/9 each. Out of them, Vignesh B and Sivan S Roshan secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹50000 + trophy, ₹30000 and ₹20000 each. The five-day rating tournament was organized by Coimbatore District Chess Association at Hindusthan College of Arts and Science in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu from 27th to 31st May 2024. Arjun Erigaisi won his second consecutive game at 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024. He employed the Schliemann Defense in the Ruy Lopez against Shant Sargsyan (ARM). In a complex double rook endgame, Shant captured a pawn incorrectly. It resulted in him having a triple pawn, allowed black's rook to access the newly opened file and turn things in his favor. This win increased Arjun's live rating to 2777.2. He needs to gain 18.5 Elo rating points more to surpass Fabano Caruana (USA) and become World no.3. IM Divya Deshmukh prepared well for her game against WGM Rakshitta Ravi. Divya played 5...Be7 in the Classica French Defence, something she has not played well before. It was a dubious line. However, it is quite difficult to find all correct moves when you are in an uncharted territory. She capitalized well on her opponent's positional mistakes to maintain her sole lead 8/9 at FIDE World Junior 2024 Girls. WIM Mariam Mkrtchyan (ARM) is the only girl at 7.5/9. WFM Sachi Jain seized her advantage against WGM Beloslava Krasteva (BUL) when the latter erred in an already difficult endgame. Divya will face Sachi in the penultimate round. India wins nine medals at 26th Asian Youth Rapid 2024

India is off to a great start at 26th Asian Youth Chess Championships 2024. In the Rapid event, the kids won four individual medals - three Gold and a Silver. Narayani Umesh Marathe scored an unbeaten 6/7 to clinch Gold in Under-8 Girls. Pooja Shree R made 6/7 to win Gold in Under-10 Girls. Pratitee Bordoloi scored 6.5/7, remained undefeated and claimed the Gold medal convincingly. Siddhanth Poonja scored 6/7 to secure the Silver medal in Under-12 Open. Narayani and Pratitee became clear champions. Both of them remained invincible. In total India has won nine medals - four individual and five team. They all have chances to win more medals. Arjun Erigaisi makes a great start at 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024. He played a nice positional game against Robert Hovhannisyan (ARM). Arjun maneuvered his knight beautifully after his opponent created holes in his dark squares. The knight played a key role in Arjun getting the advantage and converting it into a full point. The only other victor of the round is, Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU). The Romania no.2 crushed Volodar Murzin in a 21-move miniature. The total prize fund of the tournament is 7450000 AMD (≈ US$ 18400). Divya got an advantage out of the opening and she outplayed her opponent after that. WIM Mariam Mkrtchyan (ARM) and WGM Rakshitta Ravi are trailing the sole leader by a half point at 6.5/8 each. Four girls including two Indians - WFM Rindhiya V and WFM Sachi Jain are at 6/8 each. In the Open event, GM Aleksey Grebnev drew against GM Kazybek Nogerbek (KAZ).
