Arav Baid perfect at Birmingham Open 2024

Arav Baid scored a perfect 5/5 to win Birmingham Open 2024. He finished a full point ahead of the competition. After a Bye in the first round, Arav won the next four games including a win over the top seed and eventual second runner-up, CM Jan Murawski (ENG). John M Potter scored sole 4/5 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. The total prize fund was £1500. The top three prizes in each of the four sections were £180, £120 and £60 respectively. The two-day five-round rating open tournament was organized by Warwickshire Chess Association at King Edward VI Five Ways School in Birmingham, England on 17th and 18th November 2024. Can Arjun Erigaisi beat Andrey Esipenko to win Qatar Masters 2024?

GM Andrey Esipenko defeated GM Shant Sargsyan (ARM) to gain sole lead 7/8 at Qatar Masters. Esipenko won a hard fought battle which resulted in a four-knights endgame. GM Arjun Erigaisi won against his compatriot, GM Karthikeyan Murali to maintain his pursuit. Arjun is trailing the sole leader Esipenko by a half point 6.5/8. He is in a must-win situation to become the champion, while a draw is enough for Esipenko to clinch the first place. More than the championship, the valuable FIDE Circuit points are also hanging in the balance. So Arjun would undoubtedly go for maximum. Round 9 starts today at 12 p.m. local time, 2:30 p.m. IST. D Gukesh got a good opportunity in the penultimate game of the FIDE World Championship 2024, presented by Google. However, he missed it. Will the miss prove costly? Only time will tell. The world champion mentioned that he was quite tired after a long game. However, he seemed quite energised answering the questions and analyzing various position. The challenger on the other hand was evidently disappointed, as this could probably end up being his last opportunity in the Classical games. History can still happen tomorrow or the day after. Diptayan Ghosh dominates Tata Steel Chess Festival 2024 Blitz Open

GM Diptayan Ghosh scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Tata Steel Chess Festival 2024 All India Blitz Open. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. IM Mayank Chakraborty and FM Aditya Vikram Paul scored 8/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Diptayan drew with Mayank and defeated Aditya. The one-day nine-round blitz open was organized by Dhanuka Dhunseri Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy at Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium in Kolkata, West Bengal on 17th November 2024. Prashanth J Naik scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win Chadurangotsava Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Four players - Sibi Srinivas Einstein, Sai Sarthak Karanam,Avirat Chauhan and Aditya Ranjan Sahu scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second to fifth place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹500001. The top three prizes were ₹50001, ₹40000 and ₹25000 along with a trophy each. The five-day nine-round rating open tournament was organized by BMS College of Engineering and Chess Knights at BMS College of Engineering in Bengaluru, Karnataka from 14th to 18th November 2024. GM Shant Sargsyan (ARM) held World no.4, GM Arjun Erigaisi to a solid draw in Round 7 of Qatar Masters 2024. GM Andrey Esipenko defeated the UAE no.1, GM Salem Saleh to join Shant in the lead 6/7. GM Karthikeyan Murali scored a fine victory over GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI). Karthikeyan joined Arjun in the pursuit at 5.5/7 each. Karthikeyan will face Arjun in the penultimate round and two coleaders - Esipenko and Shant will clash against each other. A total of eleven players are at 5/7. GM Raunak Sadhwani and GM Ilya Smirin (ISR) scored 7/9 each at XTX Markets London Chess Classic 2024 Masters. Raunak drew with Ilya in the final round to become co-champions. Since there is no tie-break in any of the London Chess Classic events, except for Super Blitz qualifiers, both of them shared first place. Four players - GM Vignir Vatnar Stefansson (ISL), IM Ameet K Ghasi (ENG), IM Matthew J Wadworth (ENG) and GM Oleg Korneev (ESP) scored 6.5/9. They shared third place. The total prize fund was £33500. Boris Savchenko clear first at 15th KIIT GM Open, Aronyak Ghosh second

GM Boris Savchenko drew with GM Sayantan Das to become a clear champion of 15th KIIT International Chess Festival GM Open 2024. Savchenko scored 8.5/10, finished a full point ahead of the competition. IM Aronyak Ghosh drew with GM Van Huy Nguyen (VIE) to secure second place. The Vietnamese GM was placed third according to tie-breaks. Ten more players also scored the same 7.5/10 each. Among them, IM Kaustuv Kundu, IM Viani Antonio Dcunha, GM Sayantan Das and GM Saptarshi Roy was adjudged fourth, sixth, eighth and tenth respectively. Odisha's own Utkal Ranjan Sahoo was the highest untitled finisher at eleventh place. The total prize fund of the festival was ₹6000000, ₹3000000 for Category A. GM Karthikeyan Murali lost to GM Shant Sargsyan (ARM) in Round 6 of Qatar Masters 2024. Karthikeyan's all-out attack did not work out against the Armenian. Shant has gained sole lead 5.5/6. GM Arjun Erigaisi defeated GM David Paravyan in a wild game. Arjun moved to 5.5/6. He will face Shant in Round 7. GM Andrey Esipenko and GM Salem Saleh (UAE) are also at 5/6 each. Elllobregat Open 2024: Sokolovsky Triumphs, 8 Norms Achieved

The Elllobregat Open 2024, one of Spain’s premier chess tournaments, came to a thrilling conclusion with intense battles and remarkable performances. GM Yahli Sokolovsky from Israel claimed the title after a dramatic final round. GM Savva Vetokhin from FIDE finished in second place, while GM Cristobal Henriquez Villagra from Chile secured third. In addition to the exciting competition for the top spots, a total of 8 international norms were achieved, including IM, WGM, and WIM norms. Among these, Indian player Tejaswini G earned the WGM norm. The organizers of the Elllobregat Open extend an invitation to all players to join the 2025 edition, which will take place on the same dates next year, offering prizes for the top 30 players, with a total prize pool of 40,000 euros. World Championship: Ding Liren bounces back in Game 12 again

Ding Liren struck back in Game 12 of FIDE World Championship Match for the second consecutive year. Last time, he did it against Ian Nepomniachtchi and went on to win the match, become the World Champion. This time, he did it to level the score. He revealed a few things he did to make a comeback. He slept early, got himself energized, spent a bit of time in the player's lounge to ensure he has enough energy for the critical moment. The reigning and defending champion, also changed his appearance, something with his hair. He admitted to getting caught by surprise in the opening, found some ideas to pose problems for his opponent. Richard Rapport sent him a file named strike back, and Ding Liren made it happen. His mom reminded him what he did last time and instilled confidence in him that he can do it again. Tomorrow is the last rest day.
